Mental Health Examination, Treatment, Etc., For Mental Illness: Provide For Treatment Team To Concur On Decision To Discharge Mental Patients And For Period Of Conditional Release Of Mentally Ill Defendants, Melinda D. Taylor
Georgia State University Law Review
HB 889 amends Title 37 of the Georgia Code by changing several provisions relating to administration of mental health laws. The most significant changes include providing the Department of Human Resources with access to patient records, changing the duties of the chief medical officer, allowing chief medical officers to appoint designees, changing the provision regarding patient discharge, and allowing psychologists to perform functions traditionally performed by physicians. Other minor changes include providing for confidentiality of records and providing patients with the ability to seek treatment from private psychologists. HB 469 provides the court with authority to authorize a period of …

Report, Natural Hazards And The Elderly, 1992, Graham A. Tobin, Jane C. Ollenburger
Natural Hazards Center Collection
"The goal of the research is to produce an explanatory model of how older adults cope with hazardous events through an analysis of behavior patterns and attitudes. Of particular concern are changes in the mental and physical health of older adults, responses and attitudes towards hazard warning systems, and propensities to utilize support services such as federal relief programs."

This study was designed to examine the phenomena of mood disturbance and associated potential to abuse in an elderly caregiver population. The data from which the results were obtained came from structured interviews, using quantitative measures, with 110 men and women caregivers aged 55 and over, living at home and caring for another physically or mentally ill elder (usually a spouse or other relative) who was living with them. A causal model was developed to examine the effects of locus of control, social support, physical health, stress perception, and coping efficacy on total mood disturbance and potential to abuse. Standardized …
Rights Within The Therapeutic Relationship, Patricia King
Rights Within The Therapeutic Relationship, Patricia King
Journal of Law and Health
My thesis is that the failure of these rights to be implemented in any meaningful way for persons with mental illness is the result of a narrow image of rights which emphasizes the individual, valuing autonomy independent of care, and sacrifices relationship and the connection to the community. By conceiving of rights in such a way, we strengthen the individual but do not address the reality of the context or relationship within which persons with mental illness will actualize these rights. This failure to recognize and account for the disequilibrium within therapeutic relationships and the necessity of caring within such …

[Introduction To] Handbook Of Social And Clinical Psychology: The Health Perspective, C. R. Snyder, Donelson R. Forsyth
[Introduction To] Handbook Of Social And Clinical Psychology: The Health Perspective, C. R. Snyder, Donelson R. Forsyth
Bookshelf
From 1988 to 1991 Donelson R. Forsyth worked with C.R. Snyder and many other experts in the field of social and clinical psychology, editing a handbook that--at that time--summarized ongoing efforts in what was known as the social-clinical interface. This interface recognized the growing interdependency of these two fields. Up to that time social psychologists were mostly preoccupied with the study of the interpersonal determinants of thought, feeling, and action. Their work was primarily theoretically driven, the behaviors they sought to explain were the sort that occurred in everyday settings, and they preferred to test their hypotheses through laboratory experimentation. …
Religious Devoutness In College Students: Relations With Emotional Support Adjustment And Psychological Separation From Parents, P. Scott Richards
Religious Devoutness In College Students: Relations With Emotional Support Adjustment And Psychological Separation From Parents, P. Scott Richards
Faculty Publications
The relation between religious orientation and mental health was investigated. Measures of religious orientation and devoutness, depression, shame and guilt, existential well-being, and psychological separation from parents were administered to 268 undergraduate students. Four groups were formed. Results indicated that religiously devout intrinsic and proreligious Ss did not differ from less devout extrinsic and nontraditionally religious students in depression, shame, and existential well-being. Intrinsic and proreligious Ss scored higher on guilt proneness and religious well-being and lower on functional, attitudinal, and emotional separation from parents than did nontraditionally religious Ss. Ellis's (1980) religiosity-em otional-disturbance hypothesis was not supported. Some insight …

A New Twist In The War On Drugs: The Constitutional Right Of A Mentally Ill Criminal Defendant To Refuse Antipsychotic Medication That Would Make Him Competent To Stand Trial, Brian Domb
Journal of Law and Health
The purpose of this Note is to analyze what right, if any exists for a mentally ill criminal defendant to refuse the administration of antipsychotic drugs to gain competence to stand trial. Focusing mainly on the trial context of the right to refuse is not to suggest that there is not overlap between the right of a criminal defendant to refuse and the right of a civilly committed patient to refuse. Indeed, it is often unclear why an individual is brought to the emergency room of a general hospital and eventually committed, rather than being arrested and booked and later …

Mental Status And Time Of Day In Elderly Nursing Home Residents, Lynn S. Lashley
MSN Research Projects
The purpose of this quantitative and qualitative descriptive study was to examine the differences in mental status at morning and evening hours of the day among elderly nursing home residents and to describe behaviors and environmental cues associated with changes in mental status. Residents, aged 70 to 90 years who were mobile, were selected from a sample of convenience at a 100-bed rural nursing home in West Central Alabama. A total of 48 residents, 33 females and 15 males, participated in the study. Demographic data were obtained from the health care records. Mental status of each subject was measured, using …

Coping With Stress: Adjustment To Visual Loss In Diabetes Mellitus., Linda Roussel Upton
Coping With Stress: Adjustment To Visual Loss In Diabetes Mellitus., Linda Roussel Upton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Individuals with diabetes face complex health management tasks over a long period and must cope with serious long-term medical complications including retinopathy and resulting blindness and disability. Although it may be expected that psychological problems may accompany loss of vision in adulthood, little research attention has been given to psychological coping and adjustment in this group. Using a stress and coping model, this investigation focused on identifying and measuring stressor, cognitive, and coping variables in order to determine their associations with psychological and functional adjustment in individuals with adult-onset loss of vision. Forty diabetic subjects with vision loss requiring rehabilitation …
The Relationship Between Congruence Among Communication Channels And Degree Of Mental Health, Karen R. Seibel
The Relationship Between Congruence Among Communication Channels And Degree Of Mental Health, Karen R. Seibel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Writers from a number of theoretical backgrounds have asserted that agreement in the emotional messages conveyed by various verbal and nonverbal communication channels is related to the communicator's psychological health. If this conjecture is accurate, then congruence among communication channels could be used as a behaviorally based assessment tool. However, empirical research to test this theoretical and clinical assumption is relatively lacking. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that individuals who display congruence (agreement) between verbal (language), verbal/vocal (language plus paralinguistic cues, or speech) and nonverbal (facial) channels of communication will show a greater degree of mental …

Mental Impairments And The Rehabilitation Act Of 1973, David Allen Larson
Faculty Scholarship
This article examines the question of whether an asserted mental disorder should be regarded as a statutory impairment. The article begins by outlining the Rehabilitation Act and by discussing the diagnostic difficulties that exist in the mental health field. It then surveys specific cases arising under the Rehabilitation Act. Selected cases reviewing state statutory language are also examined. The article provides a broad discussion of the questions and concerns that must be considered when formulating a nondiscrimination policy protecting mentally impaired persons. It concludes by suggesting an approach for handling cases alleging discrimination due to a mental impairment.
