(Dis)Advantages Of Device-Free Time: A Mixed Methods Digital Detox Study, Sandy Burrill
Longwood Senior Thesis Proposal
As smartphone ownership has become more prevalent, so have studies investigating the outcomes of periods of separation from digital devices, termed “digital detox”. Using a within-subjects design in which individuals will partake in weekly device-free contemplative practices, the proposed study aims to fill gaps in current digital detox literature including the control of compensatory behaviors, the sustainability and real-life applicability of interventions, and an extended length of digital detox intervention periods. Mixed methods will be employed to ensure the capturing of a full range of experiences via both open-ended, qualitative responses as well objective measures of screen time and mindfulness …

Sustaining Breaths For Restorative Rest: A Preliminary Evaluation Of Sleep, Mental Health, And Cognitive Function Following Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Elliottnell Perez
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder that produces repetitive obstruction or collapse of the upper airway. Positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy is the gold standard treatment for OSA. Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) is considered an alternative treatment for patients who are unable to tolerate PAP therapy. The purpose of the study was to examine sleep, mental health, and cognitive health outcomes before and after HNS to determine its viability as an alternative treatment.
Methods: The study utilized a single-group, pretest-posttest design. Objective and subjective sleep was measured using actigraphy, sleep diary, and questionnaires. Objective and subjective …

The purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with First-Year University students’ help-seeking behaviors for university-based mental health services. H1: There will be group differences between gender and race/ethnicity on help-seeking behaviors, knowledge barriers of services or providers and perceived stigma. H2 …
Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Practice Change To Impact Medication Adherence For Patients With Anxiety And Depression, Julienne Thomas
Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Practice Change To Impact Medication Adherence For Patients With Anxiety And Depression, Julienne Thomas
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Mental health disorders contribute to 14% of the global disease burden and approximately 30% of non-fatal disease burden, which patients make worse by non-adherence to taking their medications. Non-adherence to medications is particularly significant with mental health disorders because those disorders increase morbidity and worsen the disease. Electronic reminders are successful in improving medication adherence. This project sought to implement an evidence-based practice change in patients identified as non-adherent to anxiety and depression medications in a rural primary care practice where 60% of patients use medication for mental health. Using Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory as a framework, patients were identified …
Evaluation And Management Of Postpartum Depression In South Asian Women, Gujri Chadha
Evaluation And Management Of Postpartum Depression In South Asian Women, Gujri Chadha
Capstone Showcase
Postpartum depression is a worldwide phenomenon that affects about 10 to 20% of women within the first year of delivery. During the 12 months following delivery, about 85% of mothers experience a mood disturbance2. The importance of evaluating and managing postpartum depression is crucial as untreated postpartum depression can lead to a significant risk of morbidity for the child as well as the mother of the child3. Despite the remarkable prevalence of this diagnosis throughout cultures, the screening process for PPD is routinely missed, and the management is frequently incomplete for various reasons3. This phenomenon is exacerbated in minority populations …

Stress Levels Of Bisexual Individuals In Mixed-Orientation Relationships, Amanda Bartley
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Binegativity, the negative perceptions, assumptions, and discrimination experienced by bisexual individuals, is associated with adverse health outcomes including higher rates of mood and anxiety disorders. There is a growing body of research on bisexuality, but there remains little research investigating the risk and protective factors, and the mental health outcomes of bisexual individuals in mixed-orientation relationships. The current study aimed to fill the gaps of the extant research, investigating if social support, outness of bisexual identity, satisfaction with communication between partners, and centrality of group membership and ingroup ties to the LBGT community moderate the relationship between experiences of negativity …

In view of the mental health issues associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, this study draws on the theories of proactive coping and altruism to examine how knowledge sharing can be used to address employee performance and mental wellbeing. Emotional intelligence is modelled as a moderator in these relationships. Two studies were conducted in Australia and Vietnam to validate the proposed relationships. The results show that only knowledge donating has a positive effect on employee performance, whereas both types of knowledge sharing are significantly related to positive mental wellbeing. Emotional intelligence exerted significant moderation effects between knowledge donating and positive mental …

Physiological Responses Between Collegiate Female Athletes Versus Collegiate Female Non-Athletes To Body Image, Nutrition, And Mental Health Inquiries., Molly Mcchesney, Jenna Holloway
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Participation in college athletics poses numerous demands on young adults. Not only are there academic demands to remain eligible for competition, but there are physical and mental demands that often go unnoticed. With all these demands, it is understandable how one's nutrition, body image, and mental health may go on the back burner, resulting in insufficiencies in all three categories. The results from this study suggest that athletes displayed stronger physiological responses with respect to heart rate and blood pressure when responding to the surveys surrounding the topics of mental health, body image, and nutrition as compared to non-athletes. The …

Purpose: Quality of life (QoL) after cochlear implantation has been investigated using a variety of QoL questionnaires. However, few studies have examined the perceived QoL of cochlear implant (CI) recipients compared between the recipient and a frequent communication partner (FCP) using both hearing-related (hearing-specific), and health-general (health-general) measures.
Method: For this multiple case study, five participant pairs were recruited, consisting of five adult recipients who were implanted at least six months prior to the time of evaluation, and five adult frequent communication partners who lived with the recipient at the time of evaluation. All ten participants (five pairs) completed a …
Black Women And The Weight Of The World: When The Weight Becomes Too Much To Bear, April R. Edmonds
Black Women And The Weight Of The World: When The Weight Becomes Too Much To Bear, April R. Edmonds
DSW Capstone Projects
ABSTRACT
Black women’s mental health continues to go largely underrepresented. Black women are seen as having many protective factors such as their faith communities, family and friends, and what others see as strength and resilience. A review of the literature depicts Black women as traditionally being caretakers, nurturers, and depicted as strong (Castelin & White, 2022). Because of this perception, terms such as the Strong Black Woman Schema and the Black Superwoman Phenomena are what many equate Black women with. This scholarship instead shows how associations such as these impact Black women negatively and impose additional stigma and hardship. Research …
Sleep And Health Behaviors In A Safety-Net Primary Care Setting, Sahar Sabet
Sleep And Health Behaviors In A Safety-Net Primary Care Setting, Sahar Sabet
Theses and Dissertations
Nearly half of all premature deaths in the United States are attributable to preventable and modifiable health risk behaviors. For decades, the leading behavioral health contributors to morbidity and mortality are tobacco use, physical inactivity, and alcohol consumption. Medication adherence is a relatively less studied yet critical interrelated health behavior that is tied to health and treatment outcomes. Sleep, an important pillar of health, is a daily and modifiable behavior that shows promise as a health behavior facilitator. Better understanding the dynamics of these modifiable health behaviors is essential for the improvement of health promotion, particularly among underserved populations (e.g., …

Long-Term Psychological Adaptation Of U.S. Human Resource Personnel In Response To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Samantha Ann Denson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Previous research indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted employee psychological outcomes in various workforce sectors. Although research showed that U.S. human resource (HR) employees experienced unique occupational challenges during the pandemic, the literature did not explore pandemic-related psychological outcomes in this population. This quantitative survey-based study included a purposive sample of 294 U.S. HR professionals to explore the pandemic’s impact on their psychological well-being. The transactional model of stress and coping served as the theoretical framework to understand the independent effects of appraisal, meaning-based coping, and coping efforts on psychological well-being. A mediation analysis was used to understand the …
I Am Queer And Asian: The Crossroad Of Race And Lgbtqia+ Identity Among Queer Asian Canadian Youth And The Impacts Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kenny Chee
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
LGBTQIA+ Asian youth face unique challenges due to their intersecting identities. Utilizing Asian Critical Race Theory and the Integration Model of Stress and Trauma in LGBTQIA+ Asians, LGBTQIA+ Asian youth are likely to experience detrimental mental health outcomes due to the stigmatization within their Asian culture and racial discrimination from the LGBTQIA+ communities. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated existing challenges because of the closure of community spaces and increased hate crimes against Asians. Nonetheless, research on the intersectional experiences of LGBTQIA+ Asians in Canada, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic is sparse. Thus, to address this gap, I …

Experiences Of Quality Of Life Among Youth Experiencing Homelessness, Mental Health Problems, And Addictions, Wilsy Choudhary
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Youth experiencing homelessness are often at a higher risk for developing concurrent mental health and addiction disorders. Existing interventions such as Housing First for Youth (H4FY) aim to provide youth experiencing homelessness with immediate access to safe, affordable housing as well as social inclusion and wellness supports. Furthermore, mental health interventions in the form of an integrated mental health and addictions (IMHA) service model have also been proposed to address the access barriers in place for youth experiencing homelessness, such as arbitrary exclusion criteria for substance use, long waiting periods and to further help them navigate the existing complex mental …
