“Truth” That Sells: Broadcast News Media In Video Art And Art Education, Mary Wyrick Jan 1994

“Truth” That Sells: Broadcast News Media In Video Art And Art Education, Mary Wyrick

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Vincent Lanier (1969), Manuel Barkan and Laura Chapman (1967), Laura Chapman (1982), Paul Duncum (1987, 1989), and Dan Nadaner (1985) have written about the implications of using mass media sources in art education. In their writings, each of these authors acknowledged the importance of film, television, and other mass media to student populations in art educational contexts. Even with these precedents and extensive literature in media studies, students today continue to uncritically consume the visual media that permeate their lives. They need to understand how contemporary culture is at least partially shaped by representations in visual media. Whether these representations …

Indian Television: The State, Privatisation And The Struggle For Media Autonomy, Geoffrey W. Reeves Jan 1994

Indian Television: The State, Privatisation And The Struggle For Media Autonomy, Geoffrey W. Reeves

Research outputs pre 2011

India represents an example of immense complexity and diversity in cultural production and communications. Broadcasting, film, newspaper, magazine, and musical production have been characterised by regional and linguistic diversity, with non-Hindi and non-English media in the private sphere especially showing signs of remarkable growth over the last decade or more (Jeffrey 1993). While the basic role of the state and state regulatory framework was established under British colonial rule, it has undergone substantial modification in the post-colonial period. In concert with many countries in the 'third world', private rather than state cultural and media production has become increasingly dominant to …

Inference Of Moisture Content In Unsaturated Media Using Ultrasonics, Suresh N Thota Jan 1994

Inference Of Moisture Content In Unsaturated Media Using Ultrasonics, Suresh N Thota

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A study is reported which investigates the use of commercial ultrasonics to determine moisture content in geologic and similar materials. Transmission experiments were performed on two of the limiting extremes found in these types of media. In one, tests were made on moistened sand. In the other, fractured media were experimentally simulated with a stack of ceramic tiles with gaps filled with and without water. A simple theoretical model has been developed to estimate velocities and transmitted amplitudes through the tile system, and calculations from this model are compared to the experimental data. It appears that ultrasonics are more sensitive …

Starting From Scratch: The First Amendment Reporter-Source Privilege And The Doctrine Of Incidental Restrictions, Marcus A. Asner May 1993

Starting From Scratch: The First Amendment Reporter-Source Privilege And The Doctrine Of Incidental Restrictions, Marcus A. Asner

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Note examines reporters' claims to a First Amendment reporter-source privilege in light of First Amendment doctrine as a whole. Part I briefly explains the current state of reporter-source privileges and the policies behind them. Part II then attempts to identify doctrinal support for the press's claim to a First Amendment privilege. Part II rejects the notion that the First Amendment affords special protection to the press as an institution. A reporter's status as a member of the institutional media is not irrelevant, however, and the well-established principle that the government may not target or single out the press for …

Symposium—In The Media, A Woman’S Place, Ted Pease

Journalism and Communication Faculty Publications

FOR WOMEN AND THE MEDIA, 1992 was a year of sometimes painful change-the aftermath of the Anita HillClarence Thomas hearings; the public spectacle of a vice president's squabble with a fictional TV character; Hillary Rodham Clinton's attempt to redefine the role of the political wife; election of women to Congress and to state offices in unprecedented numbers.

The Media And Women Without Apology, Everette E. Dennis, Ted Pease

Journalism and Communication Faculty Publications

WHETHER IT IS a rejuvenated sense of urgency or simply the last straw of impatience in the latest "year of the woman," something new is in the air when people talk about women and the media. Conversations with people who care about mass communication, the larger society and how women are portrayed in or employed by print and electronic media have taken on a new, sharper tone in recent years, especially in 1992.

Reporting The Truth And Setting The Record Straight: An Analysis Of U.S. And Japanese Libel Laws, Ellen M. Smith Jan 1993

Reporting The Truth And Setting The Record Straight: An Analysis Of U.S. And Japanese Libel Laws, Ellen M. Smith

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Note argues that U.S. courts and lawmakers should adopt some aspects of Japanese libel law. Part I compares the balances struck in U.S. and Japanese libel law between promoting press freedoms and protecting individual interests. Part II focuses on the extent to which each system succeeds in addressing the objectives of encouraging aggressive, accurate reporting, and compensating libel victims. Finally, Part III proposes a new U.S. libel standard that would adopt, with some modifications, key elements of Japanese libel law without running afoul of established U.S. constitutional requirements.

The Australian Media And The 'Push To Asia', Jefferson Lee Jan 1993

The Australian Media And The 'Push To Asia', Jefferson Lee

Research outputs pre 2011

In 1989 the Garnaut Report appeared arguing Australian trade would have to take on a new Asian focus. 1 The Hawke Government began to implement its recommendations in 1990-91. But it was not until the ascendancy of the Keating administration that in 1992 the Federal Government launched a major national initiative to integrate Australia more closely with the Australian-Pacific Region. Various federal politicians and departmental spokespersons argued with a great deal of urgency that "Asia" was a potential economic lifeline for Australia well into the 21st Century. Federal Minister Dawkins said the time had come for Australia "to be enmeshed …

Perspectives On Disclosing Rape Victims' Names, Deborah W. Denno

Fordham Law Review

In this Essay, Professor Denno examines the century-long conflict between an individual's right to privacy and the freedom of the press in the context of the media's disclosure of rape victims' names. Part I briefly reviews the United States Supreme Court's primary rulings on this topic, explaining that the Court has generally protected the freedom of the press under the First Amendment Part I emphasizes, however, that the Court has left available an opportunity for a con- trary interpretation under certain circumstances in Florida Star v. BJ.F., the Court's last ruling concerning the disclosure of rape victims' names. Part I1 …

A Comparison Of The Comprehension Of Procedural Information Using Computer And Hard-Copy Media, Aiessa Moyna Lawrence Jan 1993

A Comparison Of The Comprehension Of Procedural Information Using Computer And Hard-Copy Media, Aiessa Moyna Lawrence

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Users of technical procedures must be able to understand the documents to use them to perform their work. As more companies contemplate putting their procedures on-line, it is important to know whether computer systems will be as effective as traditional hard-copy presentation in communicating procedures to the employees who must use them; To determine whether there is a relationship between computer usage and the comprehension of technical procedures, an experiment was conducted among employees of a scientific and technical company in Las Vegas, Nevada. A control group read and demonstrated its comprehension of hard-copy procedures only, while an experimental group …

Testing The Role Of Technical Information In Public Risk Perception, Branden B. Johnson, Peter M. Sandman, Paul Miller

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

It is widely believed that more detail about health effects and likely exposure routes is apt to reduce citizens' concerns about low-probability Risks. The authors' study suggests that providing such detail may not be as useful as, e.g., addressing public concerns and keeping citizens current on officials' actions.

Promises Of Confidentiality: Do Reporters Really Have To Keep Their Word, Harold B. Oakley Jun 1992

Promises Of Confidentiality: Do Reporters Really Have To Keep Their Word, Harold B. Oakley

Missouri Law Review

In an industry in which information is the ultimate commodity, a new dilemma that confronts the media world is whether the First Amendment protects news gatherers from sources who try to enforce promises of confidentiality. The debate raised in Cohen v. Cowles Media Co. pits the First Amendment freedoms of the press and speech against concepts of contracts and torts that are deeply rooted in our legal heritage. At least two reasons make promises of confidentiality important to the newsgathering profession. First, breaking a promise of confidentiality that has induced a source to provide information is dishonorable. Second, sources may …

Policy Shifts In The Massachusetts Response To Family Homelessness, Margaret A. Leonard, Stacy Randell Mar 1992

Policy Shifts In The Massachusetts Response To Family Homelessness, Margaret A. Leonard, Stacy Randell

New England Journal of Public Policy

Massachusetts's response to the tragedy of family homelessness during a period of economic prosperity (1983-1987) is contrasted to a period of economic decline (1988-1992). The article describes the movement toward a structural response in the boom years and its dismantling with the emergence of a "blame the victim" response in the decline years. The roles of state government, advocacy groups, human service providers, private funding sources, academic institutions, and the media, as they influence these responses, are outlined. Interviews with key actors in these groups, group interviews with formerly homeless women, a review of the literature, and the authors' direct …
