[Review Of] Herman Gray, Watching Race: Television And The Struggle For "Blackness,", Clarence Spigner Jan 1996

[Review Of] Herman Gray, Watching Race: Television And The Struggle For "Blackness,", Clarence Spigner

Ethnic Studies Review

Professor Herman Gray offers a fascinating, highly analytical, and well-researched account of race (and gender) mirrored in the prism of televised images. Focusing mostly on the decade of the 1980s, in an almost razzle-dazzle and didactic fashion he explores the deep sociological and political manifestations of televised racial imagery and its effects on the well-being of American society.

Ethnic Studies Review

In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the relationship between the media arts and the Latino communities of the United States. A number of important books and essays have been published on the subject, most notably Chon Noriega, ed. Chicanos and Film: Representation and Resistance (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1992), George Hadley-Garcia, Hispanic Hollywood: The Latins in Motion Pictures (New York: Carol Publishing, 1993), and Gary D. Keller, Hispanics and United States Film: An Overview and Handbook (Tempe, Arizona: Bilingual Press, 1994). In fact, there have been so many books, edited collections, and essays published on …

The Big Chill: Third-Party Documents And The Reporter's Privilege, Bradley S. Miller Jan 1996

The Big Chill: Third-Party Documents And The Reporter's Privilege, Bradley S. Miller

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

In the wake of Philip Morris' multi-billion dollar libel suit against ABC, a Virginia court has sanctioned a new method of discovery that promises to have an unsettling impact on the reporter's privilege to protect confidential sources. In Philip Morris Cos. v. American Broadcasting Cos., the tobacco giant moved to compel disclosure of the identity of a former R.J. Reynolds manager who suggested on ABC's Day One news program that tobacco companies add nicotine to the cigarettes they manufacture. At the same time, Philip Morris issued subpoenas for the expense records of two ABC employees who wrote and produced …

The O.J. Simpson Verdict: A Lesson In Black And White, Christo Lassiter

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This article is an attempt to analyze the O.J. Simpson verdict and the press coverage of it, to suggest ways not only of improving criminal justice in a diverse community, but also of improving press coverage of criminal justice in a diverse community. Part Two of this essay is subdivided into two sections. The first section surveys the op-ed pages of major newspapers to evaluate the analysis of, and the commentary on, the O.J. Simpson verdict. The second section deconstructs the press' spin on the verdict. Part Three of this article discusses the role of a jury and proof beyond …

Reconstructing Reality: Interpreting The Aeroplane Disaster News Story, Ana C. Garner Jan 1996

Reconstructing Reality: Interpreting The Aeroplane Disaster News Story, Ana C. Garner

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

At 9 a.m. on 31 August 1988, Delta Flight 1141 crashed on take‐off, killing 13 people and leaving 94 survivors. Existing research has furthered our insight into media coverage of disasters but it has not broadened our understanding of disaster narrative interpretations and disaster behaviour education. In total, 24 in‐depth interviews explore reader interpretations of print‐mediated disaster reality and the Delta 1141 disaster. Disaster news stories provide the frames people use to interpret aeroplane disaster behaviour. Concludes the media need to recognize that their pedagogical role extends beyond disaster reporting and includes disaster behaviour information.

Sabbatical Leave Proposal, Stephen E. Brown Oct 1995

Sabbatical Leave Proposal, Stephen E. Brown

Sabbaticals

The sabbatical will be built around analysis and study of the speeches and great speakers of the mid-1800's in the United States, among them Lincoln, Davis, Lee, Grant, and Frederick Douglas. Theirs was an era of great speeches and volatile public opinion. I believe their words and presentations were as much responsible for the definition of America as those of Washington or Jefferson. Even the average soldier displayed language skills of surprising quality. These speeches, poems and correspondences effectively "sold" the American Civil War to the nation. They inspire my curiosity as to how and why they were so effective …

Closing The Barn Door After The Genie Is Out Of The Bag: Recognizing A "Futility Principle" In First Amendment Jurisprudence, Eric Easton Oct 1995

Closing The Barn Door After The Genie Is Out Of The Bag: Recognizing A "Futility Principle" In First Amendment Jurisprudence, Eric Easton

All Faculty Scholarship

This article argues for a simple proposition: the First Amendment imposes a presumption against the suppression of speech when suppression would be futile. Suppression is futile when the speech is available to the same audience through some other medium or at some other place. The government can overcome this presumption of futility only when it asserts an important interest that is unrelated to the content of the speech in question, and only when the suppression directly advances that interest.

In Part I, the article explores the role that this unarticulated "futility principle" has played in Supreme Court and other decisions …

Turner Broadcasting, The First Amendment , And The New Electronic Delivery Systems, Henry Geller Jun 1995

Turner Broadcasting, The First Amendment , And The New Electronic Delivery Systems, Henry Geller

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

After ducking the issue of the First Amendment status of cable television for years, the United States Supreme Court rendered its most important decision concerning the regulation of the new electronic media in Turner Broadcasting, Inc. v. FCC. Turner involved the constitutionality of the "must-carry" provisions of the 1992 Cable Act (the "Act" or "Cable Act") which require cable systems to carry specified local broadcast television stations. While cable television began over four decades ago as a community antenna service, it changed drastically after the advent of satellite in the mid-1970's to also provide scores of satellite-delivered programs and to …

The Animal Research Controversy: Protest, Process & Public Policy, Andrew N. Rowan, Franklin M. Loew, Joan C. Weer

Experimentation Collection

The controversy today regarding the use of animals in research appears on the surface to be a strongly polarized struggle between the scientific community and the animal protection movement. However, there is a wide range of opinions and philosophies on both sides. Mistrust between the factions has blossomed while communication has withered. Through the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, the animal movement grew in numbers and financial resources, and developed much greater public recognition and political clout. The research community paid relatively little attention to the animal movement for much of this period but, alarmed by several public relations coups …

When Juries Meet The Press: Rethinking The Jury's Representative Function In Highly Publicized Cases, Kenneth B. Nunn Jan 1995

When Juries Meet The Press: Rethinking The Jury's Representative Function In Highly Publicized Cases, Kenneth B. Nunn

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article explores questions related to the emergence of the jury's new representative function. Section II examines traditional notions of jury representativeness by demonstrating how the jury came to be viewed as a means of providing community input into the criminal justice process. Section II also describes how a broadly representative jury can aid in fact-finding and provide legitimacy for the verdict. Finally, section II explains how a jury system, closed to public exploitation, was traditionally seen as a way to protect the jury's ability to reach independent judgments.

Section III reviews selected cases which reveal judicial recognition of the …

Race, Rat Bites And Unfit Mothers: How Media Discourse Informs Welfare Legislation Debate, Lucy A. Williams Jan 1995

Race, Rat Bites And Unfit Mothers: How Media Discourse Informs Welfare Legislation Debate, Lucy A. Williams

Fordham Urban Law Journal

The goal of this article is to expose and critique the media images of poor women that drive legislative debate in AFDC public policy issues. Part II discusses the media image and its centrality in shaping social perceptions of welfare. Part III explores the impact of media images on law-making by focusing on three statutory time periods: 1935, when the AFDC program was initially enacted as part of the Social Security Act; 1967, when the first mandatory work requirements were, added to the AFDC statute; and the present, when states are implementing widely divergent categorical eligibility requirements that restrict AFDC …

Experimental Study Of Heat Transfer And Fluid Flow In Unsaturated Porous Media, Abdullah Abdullatif Izzeldin Jan 1995

Experimental Study Of Heat Transfer And Fluid Flow In Unsaturated Porous Media, Abdullah Abdullatif Izzeldin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate thermal and fluid flow behavior in an unsaturated porous medium. The experiment consisted of a bed of homogeneous glass beads packed uniformly in a Lexan rectangular box. A cylindrical heat source was located horizontally in the middle region of the bed and the bed was heated to steady state conditions. Water was then introduced uniformly through square nozzles located over the fill material for short periods of time. The box was fitted with a screen at the bottom to keep the porous material intact while allowing the water to flow out. Below the …

Transport Of Solutes In Complex Hydrogeological Media, Vinod Vallikat

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study presents numerical simulations of conservative solute transport in a complex heterogeneous porous media. A methodology to incorporate all the available information for describing the heterogeneity is developed. A Particle Tracking Random Walk method is used to simulate the solute transport through a heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity field generated based on a bimodal distribution. The effect of bimodal distribution on plume migration is examined and the correlation structures of the concentration field is analyzed; The numerical results indicate that the plume separates into small blocks and travels at different velocities through the preferential flowpaths. This was also noticed in the …

Reporting Asia Series: Satellite Television And State Power In Southeast Asia: New Issues In Discourse And Control, William Atkins

Research outputs pre 2011

In May 1992 soldiers from the Thai army turned their guns on middle class and student demonstrators who were on the streets of Bangkok pressing for the resignation of the military-backed prime minister - General Suchinda Kraprayoon. A BBC camera crew was there. Among the burning cars and barricades, the crew filmed an anonymous young Thai man. The close-up image of his face filled the camera operator's viewfinder. He shouted in clear English: "We want the rest of the world to see and hear what the military dictators do to our people, the Thai people, the innocent people. We want …

What Is Development Communication?, Anura Goonasekera Jan 1995

What Is Development Communication?, Anura Goonasekera

Research outputs pre 2011

Development communication is often looked upon, by writers on the subject, as a tool to bring about development in less developed countries. In this sense, what is emphasised is the use of communication media for development. In a recently published Orientation and Resource Kit on Development Communication by UNESCO, Mayo and Servaes (1994) begin with the observation, that communication media are often called upon to support development programmes. They go on to state that, whereas development strategies could vary within and across countries, the communication activities associated with them are often quite similar. These activities are informing people about specific …

"Even My Own Mother Couldn't Recognize Me": Television News And Public Understanding, Jane Rhodes Oct 1994

"Even My Own Mother Couldn't Recognize Me": Television News And Public Understanding, Jane Rhodes

Federal Communications Law Journal

Broadcast journalists face conflicting responsibilities: the need to attract a large audience through visually entertaining products versus the need to present information that enhances public understanding. The Author argues that the media's social responsibility has become blurred in recent years as competition within the broadcast industry has increased. To keep the ratings up, many journalists are trying to force information into catchy sound bites without thinking about how such dissemination distorts that information. The Author argues that in spite of the increasing competition faced by broadcast journalists, they need to examine their professional practice and personal biases closely, with an …

Reporting On Risk: Who Decides What's News?, William Lanouette

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Dr. Lanouette argues that risks alone do not command national media attention; their implications must first be framed by broader national issues.
