Modeling The Permittivity Of Two-Phase Media Containing Monodisperse Spheres: Effects Of Microstructure And Multiple Scattering, Timothy E. Doyle, David A. Robinson, Scott B. Jones, Keith H. Warnick, Brent L. Carruth Aug 2007

Modeling The Permittivity Of Two-Phase Media Containing Monodisperse Spheres: Effects Of Microstructure And Multiple Scattering, Timothy E. Doyle, David A. Robinson, Scott B. Jones, Keith H. Warnick, Brent L. Carruth

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

A numerical modeling approach was developed to predict the dielectric properties of heterogeneous particulate materials with arbitrary microstructures. To test the method, simulation and experimental data were acquired for the effective permittivities of various glass sphere suspensions. Both ordered lattices and random microstructures of up to 3600 spheres were modeled for volume fractions of 0.025–0.60. The electric fields in the suspensions were computed using an iterative multipole method that included multiple-scattering effects. The effective permittivities were obtained by averaging the electric field and electric displacement over a representative volume. Frequency spectra, electric field images, and single-scattering results (i.e., no particle-particle …

Ending The Cold War Is A Good Place To Start, Judith Blau Aug 2007

Ending The Cold War Is A Good Place To Start, Judith Blau

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Recently, I told my daughter that the U.S. media had hyped the Chinese toy recall. “Just more rehashing of Cold War rhetoric,” I said. My two-year old daughter rebuked me: “Come on, Mom! You read politics into everything!” Then, after a moment or two of silence, she said, “Oh yes, I see what you mean. The Chinese toys with toxic paints could have been made in sweatshops owned by U.S. multinationals” (proud mom—politically aware daughter).

The Media Production Experience: A Phenomenological Study Of Student Media Production In A Secondary Education Environment, Brian N. Saxton Jul 2007

The Media Production Experience: A Phenomenological Study Of Student Media Production In A Secondary Education Environment, Brian N. Saxton

Theses and Dissertations

Many media education researchers have pointed out the benefits of incorporating a production element into a media literacy program. In fact, the simple use of the word “literacy" alludes to both critical analysis of (“reading") media and creative expression through (“writing") media. However, many of those same researchers have found that there are serious difficulties with student media production from a practical standpoint. The lack of equipment, the lack of class time, poor educator training, and the possibility that students may produce school-inappropriate or offensive texts create doubts about whether or not the effort is worth the reward. This qualitative, …

News Media As Mediators, Carol Pauli Jul 2007

News Media As Mediators, Carol Pauli

Faculty Scholarship

Journalism thrives on conflict, a classic "news value," which can make a story newsworthy. As a result, the normal routines of reporters and editors tend to emphasize extreme voices and combative themes, triggering the criticism that news coverage of an event is "more likely to escalate a conflict than to pacify it."

Even so, journalism has made some legendary journeys into conflict resolution. In 1977, for example, CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite conducted separate interviews with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, which led directly to Sadat's historic visit to Jerusalem. In 1985, Ted Koppel, in …

The Press As An Interest Group: Mainstream Media In The United States Supreme Court, Eric Easton Jul 2007

The Press As An Interest Group: Mainstream Media In The United States Supreme Court, Eric Easton

All Faculty Scholarship

There can be little doubt that the institutional press is an interest group to be reckoned with in the Supreme Court, its aversion to such a designation notwithstanding. Over the past century, and especially since 1964, the press has secured for itself the greatest legal protection available anywhere in the world. While some of that protection has come from Congress, by far the greatest share has come from the Supreme Court's expansive interpretation of the First Amendment's Press Clause. Although the role of the press in American politics has been studied extensively for nearly two centuries, the role of the …

Mediator As Cook: Mediation Metaphors At The Movies, The, Jennifer L. Schulz Jul 2007

Mediator As Cook: Mediation Metaphors At The Movies, The, Jennifer L. Schulz

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In this article I will explore the vitality of the metaphor of the mediator as cook by tracing it through other food and conflict resolution related films. In so doing, I hope to achieve two things: first, to continue to insist that non-adversarial processes like mediation be included in the study of Law & Film, and second, to show that the metaphor suggested for mediators based on one film, resonates in other films and suggests new insights about mediator style and practice. Through a Law & Film analysis of two films, Soul Food and Mostly Martha, I will argue that …

Media: Effects On Attitudes Toward Police And Fear Of Criminal Victimization., Bradley Edwards May 2007

Media: Effects On Attitudes Toward Police And Fear Of Criminal Victimization., Bradley Edwards

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated the effects of the media on attitudes toward police and fear of crime, while controlling for selected audience trait variables. A self-report questionnaire was administered to 351 students at East Tennessee State University. The survey consisted of demographic and audience trait variables. The survey also contained items that measured the respondants' media consumption. Respondents were asked, for example, which format they typically get news from (e.g., newspaper, television), how often they watch television, and how real they perceive crime related television to be. Multivariate analysis showed that demographic and audience trait variables explained more variance than did …

Changes In Media Mix For Leading National Advertisers (2003 - 2005), Matthew Swain May 2007

Changes In Media Mix For Leading National Advertisers (2003 - 2005), Matthew Swain

Theses

As new communication technologies, such as the Internet, continue to grow in the United States, advertisers are re-evaluating which media mix will deliver the best return on investment. The magazine, Advertising Age, releases a list of the 100 Leading National Advertisers each year – a list that includes the advertisers’ spending in measured and unmeasured media. The seven measured media categories (newspaper, magazine, television, outdoor, radio, Internet, and Yellow Pages) include the data necessary to analyze the change in advertising spending among these leading national retailers. Using the data from both 2003 and 2005, the researcher explored three questions: 1. …

From Court To Country: A Legal, Social And Political Analysis Of Privacy In The U.S., 1965-1974, Rachel Brady May 2007

From Court To Country: A Legal, Social And Political Analysis Of Privacy In The U.S., 1965-1974, Rachel Brady

Political Science Honors Projects

In its 1965 Griswold v. Connecticut holding, the Supreme Court declared privacy a fundamental right. President Johnson, Nixon and the media also publicly championed privacy rights at this time; yet, the legislature did not officially recognize the right to privacy until the Federal Privacy Act of 1974. I argue that the divergent privacy discourses between the Court and Congress gave privacy dual-momentums to take hold in America. This paper examines the politics of these nine years, which have been virtually overlooked as to how the concept of privacy evolved and became manifested in different efforts to actualize the newly emergent …

Some Learning Opportunities From The Imus Affair, Kenneth Lasson Apr 2007

Some Learning Opportunities From The Imus Affair, Kenneth Lasson

All Faculty Scholarship

The author discusses the broader issues of free speech under the surface of the Don Imus affair, where that commentator made a gratuitous slur about the Rutgers women's basketball team. He balances this gaff against the good deeds of the same personality, comparing this with similar provocative remarks made by other well-known public figures. The media is cited for an overreaction to the Imus incident, and all these components are discussed in light of what free speech means.

Reality Cosmetic Surgery Makeovers: Potential Psychological And Behavioral Correlates, Steffanie Sperry Apr 2007

Reality Cosmetic Surgery Makeovers: Potential Psychological And Behavioral Correlates, Steffanie Sperry

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (2006), the number of cosmetic procedures has increased to over 10 million in 2005, showing a 38% increase from 2000. This increase in cosmetic surgery prevalence is paralleled by a surge in reality cosmetic makeover television programming, such as Extreme Makeover and Dr. 90210. No research to date has assessed the potential relationships between reality media viewership and body image, eating pathology, or cosmetic surgery attitudes. The tripartite model of core influence (Thompson et al., 1999) is presented as a theoretical framework for conceptualizing the link between media influences, internalization, body image …

Sexy Sensationalism Case Study: The Fascination With Celebrity News And Why Usa Today Caters To The Obsession, Grant Edward Boxleitner Apr 2007

Sexy Sensationalism Case Study: The Fascination With Celebrity News And Why Usa Today Caters To The Obsession, Grant Edward Boxleitner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the digital age where newspapers compete with the Internet, cable TV and other publications for an audience, USA Today strives to stay relevant in the media with a daily dose of celebrity news. Newspapers continue to lose circulation during a time when the fascination with celebrities shows no signs of dwindling. This study explores how much celebrity news coverage USA Today gives readers, how much competition from other outlets plays a factor and whether the nation's largest newspaper is making a sacrifice of traditional forms of newspaper content in favor of celebrity coverage. The methodology for this qualitative case …

News Media As Mediators (Cardozo J. Conflict Resol.), Carol Pauli

Faculty Scholarship

This paper explores journalism as a potential method of conflict resolution. Part I compares the norms and practices of journalism to those of facilitative mediation. Part II draws additional parallels between some aspects of journalism and two other forms of dispute resolution: transformative mediation and adjudication. Part III suggests some areas for encouragement and some areas for caution as peace journalists import conflict resolution techniques into news reporting and writing.

Figuring The Refugee, Genevieve Goulding Apr 2007

Figuring The Refugee, Genevieve Goulding

Honors Theses

''Figuring the Refugee" explores humanitarian relief for refugees as a discourse; a system of communication and identity-making which creates a subhuman refugee and perpetuates the problems of assistance. Through an auto-ethnographic narrative of my experience in the camp, I consider how the space itself creates exploitative binaries between aid workers and refugees. In an analysis of the United Nations 2006 film appeal, I argue that the discourse is normalized by images of the dehumanized refugee. The rhetoric of the film appeal limits the response of the western viewer to an uncritical sympathy, and allows for ineffective models of refugee assistance …

Interlibrary Loan Of Media Materials— The Tennessee Tech Volpe Library Experience: A Model For Change, Patricia B. Mcgee Apr 2007

Interlibrary Loan Of Media Materials— The Tennessee Tech Volpe Library Experience: A Model For Change, Patricia B. Mcgee

The Southeastern Librarian

The sending of media materials via interlibrary loan is a practice in the library world that is fraught with controversy. On the one hand, the American Library Association’s Guidelines for the Interlibrary Loan of Audiovisual Formats makes a clear case for sharing audiovisual material in all formats. The reality, on the other hand, is more in line with the statement posted by the University of Oregon Libraries on their Interlibrary Loan webpage. In some instances libraries have adopted halfway reciprocal measures. They will loan only to those institutions that will also lend to them, or who are members of a …

Filming Theater: The Audiovisual Documentation As A Substitute Of The Performance, Nestor Fernando Bravo Mar 2007

Filming Theater: The Audiovisual Documentation As A Substitute Of The Performance, Nestor Fernando Bravo

Theses and Dissertations

Theatre is not a thermometer of society; it is the fever. The archive is the aftermath that recalls that fever. In this thesis I theorize about the status of audiovisual documentation, its functionality, and its ontological relation with the performance. I argue that the film of a performance does not constitute evidence per se, but it acquires such status through the concurrence of other documents and archival artifacts existentially related to the theatrical production. I also propose that the audiovisual document becomes a substitute for the performance when it has disappeared from the historical world, becoming the new referent for …

The fourth and latest release in a series of publications on the impact of media and changes in societal culture in Asia, this book provides a study of the subnational conflicts across Asia and the global "War on Terror." The authors examine the condition of free press, access to media, and diversity in news reporting to explore how media is used as a tool to facilitate ideological coalition, shelter populations, and maintain political stability.

Culture, Sovereignty, And Hollywood: Unesco And The Future Of Trade In Cultural Products, Christopher M. Bruner Feb 2007

Culture, Sovereignty, And Hollywood: Unesco And The Future Of Trade In Cultural Products, Christopher M. Bruner

ExpressO

On October 20, 2005, the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted a treaty – by a vote of 148-2, with 4 abstentions – that legitimates domestic legal measures aimed at the protection of local producers of "cultural activities, goods and services." Opposed by the United States and Israel, the Convention represents a major diplomatic victory for Canada and France – its principal proponents – and a major blow to Hollywood and the United States, audiovisual products being among America's most lucrative exports. Both Canada and France, like many countries around the world, have …

Youth Obesity : Putting A Price On Life, Mary Catherine Langford, Serena Pedraza

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Youth obesity is increasing at an alarming rate and influenced by a number of factors. The rising costs of obesity include related illness such as diabetes, eating disorders, depression, and eventual disability or worse, death, can be avoided. This is possible by working together as individuals, part of a greater system to change our lives. We found out why the media has only chosen to focus on the issue now, in 2007. The obesity epidemic is a problem for all ages, and we felt that it was most important to educate children on the negative effects that advertising can have …

The Negative Effect Of Prozac On Teenagers In The United States, Jennifer Vares

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

What are the Negative Effect of Prozac on teens in the United States? Prozac, one of the most studied drugs in the world today, is becoming a serious death threat to many adolescents in the United States. Death rates are increasing from suicide brought on by the drug, more depression, more anxiety and more wonders of why the drug is becoming so harmful. Doctors are prone to handing out the drug not knowing what the side effects could be by not taking time to look at all the information. If the media is even promoting the drug as a harmful …

Exit From The Myopic Impasse: Social Movement Strategy In The Age Of The Internet, Kamila Joanna Pietrzyk Jan 2007

Exit From The Myopic Impasse: Social Movement Strategy In The Age Of The Internet, Kamila Joanna Pietrzyk

Digitized Theses

Our study traces and critically evaluates some of the major epistemological assumptions found in recent literature on the Global Justice Movement (GJM). Specifically, it problematizes the largely acritical discourse regarding the emancipatory potential of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) vis-à-vis the GJM. Given that the speed with which worldwide movement mobilization now can take place is historically unprecedented due to the capabilities of new ICTs, the key question asked by our study is this: in what ways do contemporary predominant media, especially the Internet, affect the nature and durability of progressive activists' resistance to globalization? Using an approach to …
