What Counts Is How The Game Is Scored: One Way To Increase Achievement In Learning Mathematics, Layman E. Allen, Gloria Jackson, Joan Ross, Stuart White

Articles

Pior investigation indicates that instructional gaming can be an effective tool for enhancing both motivation and achievement in the learning of mathematics. This study explores the extent to which the effectiveness of instructional gaming in facilitating the learning of specific mathematical ideas can be increased by incorporating devices that channel learners’ attention upon those ideas. In particular, the effect of channeling attention by changing the method of scoring is explored.

Modeling Relevance, Richard O. Lempert May 1977

Modeling Relevance, Richard O. Lempert

Michigan Law Review

During the past decade, particularly during the years immediately following the California Supreme Court's decision in People v. Collins, a number of articles have appeared suggesting ways in which jurors might use certain mathematical techniques of decision theory as aids in the rational evaluation of circumstantial evidence. Professor Tribe, in an important response to the post-Collins articles, argues against introducing these techniques into the factfinding process. Problems that Tribe foresees include the necessary imprecision of the probabilistic estimates that these techniques require, the dwarfing of soft variables by those that are more readily quantified, and the potential dehumanization …

Mathematics In America: The First Hundred Years, Judith V. Grabiner Jan 1977

Mathematics In America: The First Hundred Years, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

There are two main questions I shall discuss in this paper. First, why was American mathematics so weak from 1776 to 1876? Second, and much more important, how did what happened from 1776-1876 produce an American mathematics respectable by international standards by the end of the nineteenth century? We will see that the "weakness" -at least as measured by the paucity of great names- co-existed with the active building both of mathematics education and of a mathematical community which reached maturity in the 1890's.

The Development Of A Nongraded Mathematics Program For The Intermediate Grades In An Open Concept Middle School, Timothy D. Paschal Jan 1977

The Development Of A Nongraded Mathematics Program For The Intermediate Grades In An Open Concept Middle School, Timothy D. Paschal

All Graduate Projects

During the spring of 1972 the teaching staff of Fairview Middle School, Central Kitsap School District, was engaged in re-examining its methods of instruction. The opportunity existed to facilitate this re-examination through applied administrative techniques. Beginning in the Spring of 1972, and continuing through the Spring of 1974, the teaching staff, with the aid of this writer, worked to reorganize and improve its methods of instruction

The purpose of the project was to apply those administrative techniques which would foster and sustain a motivational level, within the teaching staff, sufficient to reorganize and improve their methods of instruction. The thrust …

A Study To Examine The Effect Of Curriculum Materials On The Ability Of General Mathematics Students To Solve Verbal Problems, Paul Raymond Goodwin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Statement of the Problem. What is the effect of the type of instructional materials on the acquisition of verbal problem-solving skills of general mathematics students?;The Assumptions of the Study. The necessary assumptions for the study were: (1) Verbal problem-solving skills can be learned by the general mathematics students; (2) all students need to learn to solve verbal problems; (3) students in general mathematics classes have not been provided with adequate instruction and thus, have not been acquiring verbal problem-solving skills; (4) the experimental mathematics curriculum materials used to teach verbal problem-solving skills for this study will improve the students' …

Attitudinal Effects Of Unified Mathematics At Hillcrest High School, Willis Dean Samuels May 1976

Attitudinal Effects Of Unified Mathematics At Hillcrest High School, Willis Dean Samuels

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between ( 1) attitude as expressed on Aiken 1s Mathematics Attitude Scale between students who had been taught Unified Mathematics and similar students who had not been taught Unified Mathematics. The sample consisted of 37 students in the treatment group and 46 students in the control group.

The students were given a copy of Aiken's Mathematics Attitude Scale. The responses were scored by the researcher. Seven null hypotheses were examined by calculating the means and standard deviations of each group. Comparison of the posttest means was performed by using …

System Of Imprimitivity For Ergodic Actions Of Locally Compact Abelian Groups., Joseph Mathew Dr. Feb 1976

System Of Imprimitivity For Ergodic Actions Of Locally Compact Abelian Groups., Joseph Mathew Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Mackeys theorem on inducud representation gives all the systems of imprimitivity for a locally compact second countable group G, acting in a separable Hilbert space and based on a transitive G-space X. These systems of imprimitivity are obtained from the unitary representationg of the closed subgroup H of G defining the transitive G-space X. The main tool for this study is a class of functions called cocycles. Maçkey showed that the (G, x) systems of imprimitivity are connected in a one-one way to unitary operator valued cocycles on GXX: This cocycle in turn gives a representation of the closed subgroup …

Multiplicatively Periodic Rings, Ted Chinburg, Melvin Henriksen Jan 1976

Multiplicatively Periodic Rings, Ted Chinburg, Melvin Henriksen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We prove a generalization of Luh's result without using Dirichlet's Theorem. We then use Theorem 1 to show that the J-subrings of a periodic ring form a lattice with respect to join and intersection (the join of two subrings is the smallest subring containing both of them). After noting that every J-ring has nonzero characteristic, we determine for which positive integers n and m there exist J-rings of period n and characteristic m. This generalizes a problem posed by G. Wene.

Group Of Point Transformations Of Time Dependent Harmonic Oscillators, Jose Ricardo Bernal Jan 1976

Group Of Point Transformations Of Time Dependent Harmonic Oscillators, Jose Ricardo Bernal

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In general, a physical system has invariant quantities which are very often related to its symmetry and to the invariance of the equation that describe it. A detailed study of the invariance property of the differential equation will be helpful in understanding this relation.

The work is concerned with a preliminary investigation of the Lie-group which leaves invariant the Newtonian and Lagrangian equation of motion for a one-dimensional harmonic oscillator. A brief review of Ehrenfest's adiabatic principle and the later treatments on exact and adiabatic invariants will be presented.

The Elements Of Mathematics Program: How Can It Be Evaluated?, Marilou Shames Giacofci Jul 1975

The Elements Of Mathematics Program: How Can It Be Evaluated?, Marilou Shames Giacofci

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

The Central Midwest Educational Research's (CEMREL) Elements of Mathematics Program (EM) for gifted students was piloted in Tidewater for five years. Before deciding whether to continue or expand the program, it was necessary to devise a method of evaluating the program's effectiveness. In the process of this evaluation, two separate comparisons were made:

- a lateral comparison between an experimental and an existing control class over a period of four years, and

- a longitudinal comparison of successive experimental classes over a four year period.

Lateral Study

To insure comparability between the experimental and control classes, both were administered the …
