Determination Of Probability Measures Through Group Actions., Inder Kumar Rana Dr.
Determination Of Probability Measures Through Group Actions., Inder Kumar Rana Dr.
Doctoral Theses
One of the fundamental problems in Measure Theory is the following: given a measurable space (x, B,), to find subclasses D of B, such that whenever for two probability measures u and v on (X, B,), u(B) = v(3) for every B c D, then u(B) = v(B) for every Be B,. The first basic theorem of Measure Theory, viz., the Caratheodory Extension Theorem says that any sub-algebra D of B, which generates B, has the above mentioned property.Let (X, B, ) be a given measurable space. A subclass n of 3, is called a determining class for a class …

The Construction Of A Logical-Empirical Structure Of Knowledge For Differential Calculus Using A Theoretical Framework Based Upon Learning Hierarchy Theory And Order Theory, James Martin Devecchi
Doctoral Dissertations
The principal result of this study is a logically and empirically valid Structure of Knowledge for Differential Calculus constructed using a methodology based on Learning Hierarchy Theory (LHT) and Order Theory (OT). A review of existing research into calculus learning is presented and properties of the strucutre of knowledge which address deficiencies in existing knowledge discussed. LHT is developed and techniques for the empirical validation and generation of hierarchies are discussed. Included in this discussion is a detailed analysis of the important properties of OT.
The generation of the structure of knowledge consisted of two phases: the logical analysis and …

Spatial Ability, Mathematics Achievement, And Spatial Training In Male And Female Calculus Students, Joan Ferrini Mundy
Doctoral Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of spatial training upon calculus achievement, spatial visualization, and tendency and ability to visualize solids of revolution in calculus, for college males and females. A random sample of 250 first-semester calculus students at the University of New Hampshire was apportioned into seven experimental groups, each containing males and females. Students were pretested on precalculus background, spatial visualization, and calculus background, and were assigned to one of three treatment conditions: audiovisual spatial training (AV), audio-vidual-tactual spatial training (AVT), and a control condition. The spatial training materials were organized into six …

The Theory And Application Of Frequency Domain Deconvolution Using Optimum Compensation In Time Domain Measurement, Robert Bruce Stafford
The Theory And Application Of Frequency Domain Deconvolution Using Optimum Compensation In Time Domain Measurement, Robert Bruce Stafford
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes a method of transforming a deconvolution problem into an equivalent convolution problem. A short discussion of the theory behind convolution and deconvolution is included, along with a survey of techniques now being used. A new method using a synthesized compensator is proposed and mathematically developed. Finally, the results of applying this method to several real and analytical signals are given.

A Microcomputer Implementation Of Real Time, Continuously Programmable Digital Filters, William Edward Storma
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
When a filter transfer function in s is replaced with the bilinear transform in z, the resulting discrete model represents the original continuous model within a second order accuracy of integration. A unique set of recently discovered minimum memory algorithms that perform the bilinear transform on a continuous transfer function are implemented on an INTEL 8080 microprocessor system. Scaling techniques are used to frequency scale all transfer functions to a standardized frequency. All data words are represented in a signed binary double precision format to maintain higher calculation speed and accuracy. Three test case transfer functions of different order are …
Probability Theory Meets Res Ipsa Loquitur, David Kaye
Probability Theory Meets Res Ipsa Loquitur, David Kaye
Michigan Law Review
This Article uses probability theory normatively in an effort to clarify one aspect of the famous tort doctrine known as res ipsa loquitur. It does not urge that jurors be instructed in probability theory or be equipped with microprocessors. Rather, it seeks an accurate statement of the res ipsa doctrine in ordinary language. In particular, this Article will show that the conventional formulation of the doctrine is misleading at best, and should be replaced with a more careful statement of the conditions warranting the res ipsa inference. To this end, Section I briefly surveys the legal doctrine, or, more precisely, …

Theory Of Estimation In Algebraic And Analytic Exponential Families With Applications To Variance Components Models., Krishnan Unni Dr.
Doctoral Theses
There are many important statistical problems of the following kind. The family of probability measures O is parametrized by a vector parame ter n varying in a q-dimen- sional domain. P can be represented as an exponential family of probability distributions with k canonical para- me ters where k is greater than q. The canonical parameters do not vary in a domain in R, but are restricted by polyno- mial or analytic equations. They vary on a curved surface defined by the polynomial or analytic equations within the natural parame ter space of the exponential family. The present work is …

Take G to be any multiplicative group. Let [G] = and choose q to be a prime such that n and q are relatively prime. Let K denote the field of order q (i.e. GF(q)-K). We form the group algebra KG defined to be the set of all formal sums {mathematical formula} with multiplication and addition defined by {series of formulas}. A straightforward application of these definitions yields that KG is an associative algebra with multiplicative identity. In fact, the identity in the group G acts as the multiplicative identity in KG. Definition 1.1.1. A ring is said to satisfy …

Let p ≡ 1 (mod 4) be a prime. A residue difference set modulo p is a set S = {ai} of integers ai such that (ai/p) = +1 and ((ai - aj)/p) = +1 for all i and j with i ≠ j, where (n/p) is the Legendre symbol modulo p. Let mp be the cardinality of a maximal such set S. The authors estimate the size of mp.

Current interest in the descriptive theory of sc ts stems largely from the many applications that the classical theory has found in probability theory, functional analysis, dynanic programming etc. As exarples, we cite the fundament al paper of Blackwell 15J wherein he has shown that many of the pathologies of probability theory c an be avoided if one takes the basic probability space to be an analytic set. As another example, we mention that several vritere [7), L23] have shown that in Blackwell's model of dynamic programming 131 the existence of optimal strategies ig related to the cxistence of measurable …
