Development Of An Individualized Mathematics Program To Assist Students To Meet The College Level Academic Skills Standard, Juan R. Burbano

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Pasco-Hernando Community College (PHCC) must prepare students to meet the 1990 College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) higher standards. The CLAST is a result of the effort made by the State of Florida to ensure that sophomore students have acquired minimum communication and mathematical skills. The CLAST consists of four subtests: essay, English language skills, reading, and mathematics. The mathematics CLAST subtest consists of the five following areas: arithmetic, logic and sets, algebra, geometry, and statistics and probability. The college will encourage students to take the CLAST in their freshman year as a way to identify deficiencies early. It would …

Some Contributions To Generalized Inverse And The Linear Complementarity Problem., N. Eagambaram Dr. May 1990

Some Contributions To Generalized Inverse And The Linear Complementarity Problem., N. Eagambaram Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A generalized inverse (g-inverse) of a matrix A is a solution x to the matrix equationA XA = A(1.1.1)A g-inverse of A can be defined alternatively as a matrix x such that x = Xb is a solution to the linear equation Ax -b for any b that makes - b consistent. There is a vast literature on g-inverse. For a number of results on g-inverses and their applications one may refer to the well known books in the literature by Rao and Mitra (1971); and by Ben Israel and Greville (1974).Another inverse that lies hidden in the definition of …

Curvatures Of Left Invariant Metrics On Lie Group And Parametric Homotopy Principles For A Class Of Partial Differential Relations On Closed Manifolds., Amitabh Tiwari Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The title of this thesis refers to two problems of different nature having no connection between them. These problems ere presented in two parts. In Pert I we have settled two conjectures of Milnor, on Lie groups with left-invariant metrics, in the affirmative and in Part II we have obtained a now Smale - Hirsch - Gromov - type theorem on the homotopy classification of a close of portial differential relations on closed manifolds. More detailed introduotions to these parts are given at the beginning of each part, It has bean our attempt to make the presentations as self-contained as …

The assessment of these needs includes an investigation of today's reform literature and the nature of mathematics, along with the history of education and cognitive theory of the 1900's.

Recovering The Lyapunov Exponent From Chaotic Time Series, Gregory W. Frank Jan 1990

Recovering The Lyapunov Exponent From Chaotic Time Series, Gregory W. Frank

Digitized Theses

Chaotic time series analysis is currently in wide use as a research tool to recover multidimensional dynamics from univariate experimental time series of chaotic systems. This thesis deals with the methodology of attractor recovery and Lyapunov exponent estimation from chaotic experimental systems. The history of dynamical recovery is reviewed and a consistent approach to accurate attractor reconstruction is advocated through the use of the Karhunen-Loeve coordinate transformation. A procedure for accurately estimating the largest Lyapunov exponent is developed based on the displacement method proposed by Wolf et al. A number of modifications to this method provide greatly improved exponent estimates …

Circular Cylinder In Axial Flow, Stephen P. Sawchuk Jan 1990

Circular Cylinder In Axial Flow, Stephen P. Sawchuk

Digitized Theses

The boundary layer formed on the outer surface of a semi-infinite circular cylinder in steady axial incompressible flow is studied in this thesis. Governing equations are solved using local similarity techniques and a nonsimilar numerical approach.;Two obvious similarity transformations can be used to obtain solutions for this problem, but they do not yield the same results, since the flow is essentially nonsimilar. In the extreme case that the radius of the cylinder is much larger than the boundary layer thickness, only one of the transformation leads to the correct solution, i.e., the Blasius solution. The other transformation yields an axial …

Constructing Isospectral But Nonisometric Riemannian Manifolds., Sheng Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this paper, we examine the examples of isospectral but non-isometric Riemannian manifolds given by Milnor, Ikeda, and Vigneras. Of these, only Milnor's example is accounted for by Sunada's method of constructing isospectral manifolds, and even then only as an "unnatural" construction.

A Cooperative Approach To Writing A Curriculum Guide For Mathematics, Sara Nilson Bos Jan 1990

A Cooperative Approach To Writing A Curriculum Guide For Mathematics, Sara Nilson Bos

All Graduate Projects

This project involved writing a curriculum guide for grades kindergarten through six in the area of mathematics. This guide was developed using a cooperative approach including small groups of teachers representing several grade levels, as well as, the entire teaching staff. The process of developing the guide was important to this study as was the mathematics guide itself. Teachers were involved in selection of a mathematics curriculum, implementing the curriculum, evaluating and adapting the curriculum after one year of use, and writing the guide to accompany the program.

Distance Function Constructions In Topological Spaces, Laurie Jean Sawyer Jan 1990

Distance Function Constructions In Topological Spaces, Laurie Jean Sawyer

Doctoral Dissertations

This work investigates the use of distance function constructions in the study of semimetrizable spaces, especially as this relates to developable, K-semimetrizable and 1-continuously semimetrizable spaces.

A distance function for X is a nonnegative, symmetric, real-valued function d: X x X $\to$ $\IR$ such that d(p,q) = 0 iff p = q. A distance function d is developable iff, when d(x$\sb{\rm n}$,p) $\to$ 0 and d(y$\sb{\rm n}$,p) $\to$ 0, then d(x$\sb{\rm n}$,y$\sb{\rm n}$) $\to$ 0; and d is a K-distance function iff whenever d(x$\sb{\rm n}$,p) $\to$ 0, d(y$\sb{\rm n}$,q) $\to$ 0 and d(x$\sb{\rm n}$,y$\sb{\rm n}$) $\to$ 0, then p = …

Exterior Vertices In Graphs And Realization Of Plurality Preference Digraphs., Weizhen Gu Jan 1990

Exterior Vertices In Graphs And Realization Of Plurality Preference Digraphs., Weizhen Gu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Part I: Peripheral and eccentric vertices of graphs. For a connected graph G, let P(G) and EC(G) denote the sets of peripheral vertices and eccentric vertices of G, respectively. In 1988 F. Buckley initiated the study of the class S of graphs G for which P(G) = EC(G). We provide several families of graphs which are in S. For certain graphs G with diameter equal to 2r(G) or 2r(G) or 2r(G) $-$ 1, we give criteria for P(G) and EC(G) to be equal. Also, for certain products, we characterize those pairs of graphs so that their product is in S. …

Some Problems For Graph Minors., Bradley Scott Gubser Jan 1990

Some Problems For Graph Minors., Bradley Scott Gubser

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation solves two problems relating to the structure of graphs. The first of these is motivated by Kuratowski's Theorem, perhaps the most famous result in graph theory. This theorem states the $K\sb5$ and K$\sb{3,3}$ are the only non-planar graphs for which both $G\\ e$, the deletion of the edge e, and G/e, the contraction of the edge e, are planar for all edges e of G. We characterize the non-planar graphs for which $G\\ e$ or G/e is planar for all edges e of G. The second problem we solve is motivated by Tutte's wheels theorem. An immediate consequence …

The Relationship Between Cooperative Small Group Composition And The Learning Of A Mathematical Concept In The Primary School Years: A Pilot Study, Susan Eaton Jan 1990

The Relationship Between Cooperative Small Group Composition And The Learning Of A Mathematical Concept In The Primary School Years: A Pilot Study, Susan Eaton

Theses : Honours

In recent years small group cooperative learning has been given increasing attention by researchers. This interest has been a result of n growing awareness of the benefits that small group cooperative learning can bring to the learning process. These benefits include gains in areas of academic achievement, self-confidence as a learner, cross-cultural/cross-racial relationships, social acceptance of mainstreamed students, and improved attitudes towards school and learning. A particular focus of North American researchers has been small group cooperative learning in mathematics. Little work had been done in this area in Western Australian schools and with the changed emphasis in the Western …

Continuous Functions In Pi-Primary Summands Of L(2) Of Some Compact Solvmanifolds., Carolyn Beth Pfeffer Jan 1990

Continuous Functions In Pi-Primary Summands Of L(2) Of Some Compact Solvmanifolds., Carolyn Beth Pfeffer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The compact quotients of three-dimensional solvable non-nilpotent Lie groups by discrete subgroups fall into two categories; those which are quotients of $S\sb{R}$ (semidirect product, R acts on R$\sp2$ by rotation), and those which are quotients of $S\sb{H}$ = $R\ \propto\ R\sp2$ (semidirect product, $R$ acts on $R\sp2$ via translation along a hyperbolic orbit). Continuous functions in the primary summands of $L\sp2$ of each type of solvmanifold are examined. It is shown that there exists a Fejer theorem on solvmanifolds $M\sb{R}$ which are quotients of $S\sb{R}$; if $P\sb{i}$: $L\sp2(M\sb{R})\mapsto$ $L\sp2(M\sb{R})$ is orthogonal projection onto the ith primary summand of such a …

National Assessment Of Educational Progress In Mathematics: Analysis And Interpretive Remarks Of Teh State Of Mathematics Achievement, John Pisapia, Ena Gross

MERC Publications

The National Assessment of Educational Progress's Mathematics assessment (hereafter the report) provides the national, educational policy makers, and practitioner the opportunity to stop pretending not to know. The report plainly confronts our own professional knowledge regarding mathematics education. In many instances it conforms much of what research has all ready described and what we have feared regarding mathematics education.

In some instances the report agrees with Carol Glickman's view that "professionals have gone about the business of teaching and operating schools in ways they privately admit are not in the best interests of students." From this view one of the …

A Fully Two-Dimensional Flux-Corrected Transport Algorithm For Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, Sen-Wei Huang Apr 1989

A Fully Two-Dimensional Flux-Corrected Transport Algorithm For Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, Sen-Wei Huang

Mathematics and Statistics

Numerical solutions of the hyperbolic partial differential equation, $\partial p\over\partial t$ + $\vec\nabla \cdot (p\vec u)$ = 0, will generally encounter the difficulties of large diffusion and oscillations near steep gradients or discontinuities. The method of Flux-Corrected Transport (FCT) developed by Boris and Book has conquered these difficulties for the one-dimensional case. Motivated by this one-dimensional FCT algorithm, a fully two-dimensional FCT algorithm is developed in this present work. This fully two-dimensional FCT algorithm is a two-step procedure: (1) the transport scheme, and (2) the antidiffusion scheme. The second step of the procedure could also be replaced by an application …

Applications Of The Calculus For Factorial Arrangements And Allied Topics., Mausumi Bose Dr. Mar 1989

Applications Of The Calculus For Factorial Arrangements And Allied Topics., Mausumi Bose Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis deals primarily with the application of the calculus for factorial ar- rangements (Kurkjian and Zelen (1962, 1963)) to various designs. The thesis has been divided into six chapters. We have made extensive use of Kronecker products and various other results from matrix theory. The results in the first two chapters involve the use of projection operators. In the first four chapters, different classes of factorial experiments have been studied by applying the calculus. Chapter 5 deals with another class of designs called repeated measurements designs (RMD's). It has been shown that the calculus for factorial arrangements serves as a …

Steady Asymmetric Flow Of A Viscous Fluid Past A Cylinder, Peter Joseph Young Jan 1989

Steady Asymmetric Flow Of A Viscous Fluid Past A Cylinder, Peter Joseph Young

Digitized Theses

The steady flow of a viscous incompressible fluid past a cylinder is considered. In particular, asymmetric flows, which involve a lift force in addition to the drag, are investigated. The Navier-Stokes equations and the equation of continuity are formulated in terms of the stream function and vorticity. The work may be divided into two parts, an asymptotic solution of the governing equations of motion at far distances from the cylinder, and a numerical solution of these equations near the cylinder. An asymptotic solution to the vorticity is obtained in the form of a Hermite polynomial expansion. This solution is in …
