Assessing And Describing Sixth-Grade Students Use Of Number Sense To Demonstrate An Understanding Of Mathematics Concepts, Deborah B. Lee Jan 1992

Assessing And Describing Sixth-Grade Students Use Of Number Sense To Demonstrate An Understanding Of Mathematics Concepts, Deborah B. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Eighteen sixth-grade students in a selected elementary school of a large school district were chosen to participate in a study to individually assess and describe their use of number sense, which demonstrated their understanding of mathematics concepts. The instrument used was teacher made and consisted of nine mathematics problems. The instrument was given to each student in a one-on-one interview. The findings suggested that developing number sense is essential for improving mathematics performance.

Attitudes And Beliefs Of Preservice Elementary School Teachers Towards Mathematics, Deborah Beam Ingalls Jan 1992

Attitudes And Beliefs Of Preservice Elementary School Teachers Towards Mathematics, Deborah Beam Ingalls

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study purposed to see if measurable changes could be detected in prospective teachers' attitudes or beliefs about mathematics as teachers progressed through their required courses of study in mathematics and mathematics education. The study included 164 prospective elementary school teachers who were enrolled in one of three mathematics or mathematics education courses. The subjects responded to a survey based on common "mathematics myths." The mathematics myths correspond to mathematical beliefs shown in other research to be held by severely math anxious or math avoidant people. The study found that students disagreed more with the mathematics myths as they progressed …

Multiple Alleles And Estimation Of Genetic Parameters: Computational Equations Showing Involvement Of All Alleles, R Chakraborty Jan 1992

Multiple Alleles And Estimation Of Genetic Parameters: Computational Equations Showing Involvement Of All Alleles, R Chakraborty

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), through their complex cargo, can reflect the state of their cell of origin and change the functions and phenotypes of other cells. These features indicate strong biomarker and therapeutic potential and have generated broad interest, as evidenced by the steady year‐on‐year increase in the numbers of scientific publications about EVs. Important advances have been made in EV metrology and in understanding and applying EV biology. However, hurdles remain to realising the potential of EVs in domains ranging from basic biology to clinical applications due to challenges in EV nomenclature, separation from non‐vesicular extracellular particles, characterisation and functional …

Improving Pupils’ Achievement Levels Through Teaching Thinking Skills Across The Curriculum, Joseph A. King Apr 1991

Improving Pupils’ Achievement Levels Through Teaching Thinking Skills Across The Curriculum, Joseph A. King

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report documents a project designed to improve pupils' achievement levels through teaching thinking skills across the curriculum at an inner-city, non-public school in New York. The Institution is co-educational and caters to the needs of a predominantly West Indian and South American Community.

An examination of the Otis Lennon School Aptitude Test (OLSAT) and the Stanford Achievement Test (S.A.T) scores (1988) for St. Stephen Lutheran School, Brooklyn (the school) revealed an achievement problem. The investigation diagnosed among other things that achievement problems were not with the weak students. It was the best students who were not performing up to …

A Plan To Improve Mathematics Achievement For Students At Central Elementary School, Angela C. Mills Mar 1991

A Plan To Improve Mathematics Achievement For Students At Central Elementary School, Angela C. Mills

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes a plan for implementing appropriate developmental mathematics practices in the primary grades so that assessment of student needs and knowledge correlated with state required assessment procedures. A large percentage of students beginning at the third grade level had been scoring at or below the national norm on the mathematics portion of the California Achievement Test and had consistently made lower report card grades beginning at the third grade level. Observations and documentation indicated a need for developmentally appropriate mathematics instruction during the beginning years of school so that learning in the mathematics areas was not superficial.

Development And Validation Of An Instructional Inservice Program For Higher Education Science Consultants Involved In Florida’S Summer Inservice Institute Program, Susan Elizabeth Chattan Dabb Mar 1991

Development And Validation Of An Instructional Inservice Program For Higher Education Science Consultants Involved In Florida’S Summer Inservice Institute Program, Susan Elizabeth Chattan Dabb

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The State of Florida requires that all sixty-seven counties within the state participate in a Summer Inservice Institute Program (SIIP) that provides content area instruction to elementary and secondary public school teachers. Critical need areas such as mathematics and science take priority in the consideration for funding and programming in all counties. The state requires that the emphasis in these summer training sessions be placed on college-level content instruction. Workshops presented solely on methods are considered not appropriate.

The rationale for funding the required program is that public school personnel, unlike their postsecondary level liberal arts counterparts, lack content-area training …

John Allen Paulos, Innumeracy: Mathematical Illiteracy And Its Consequences, Louis D. Grey Jan 1991

John Allen Paulos, Innumeracy: Mathematical Illiteracy And Its Consequences, Louis D. Grey

Sacred Heart University Review

Louis D. Grey reviews the book Innumeracy : Mathematical Illiteracy and its Consequences by John Allen Paulos. New York: Hill & Wang, 1988.

By "innumeracy" Paulos means "an inability to deal comfortably with the fundamental notions of number and chance." Paulos is talking about the problem of mathematical illiteracy, a problems that afflicts people who are otherwise very knowledgeable.

Paolos uses many examples, some serious and some amusing, to illustrate that if we are uncomfortable with the reasoning to solve a mathematical problem , even using the most elementary mathematics and probability theory, then we show ourselves to be victims …

Strong Asymptotics Of Pade Polynomials, Ninghua Li Jan 1991

Strong Asymptotics Of Pade Polynomials, Ninghua Li

Digitized Theses

New results about the strong asymptotic behaviour of diagonal Pade polynomials of high degree are obtained for certain functions with branch points. The method, a modification of a previous approach, uses a singular integral equation for the remainder function restricted to a preferred set. New techniques are developed to analyze three cases (1) a branch point not of square-root type; (2) a case where the preferred set contains three intersecting arcs; (3) a case where not all zeros of the polynomials approach the preferred set.;The first two cases have not previously been treated. The method involves approximating the kernel of …

The Lambda-Structure Of The Representation Rings Of The Classical Weyl Groups, John M. Bryden Jan 1991

The Lambda-Structure Of The Representation Rings Of The Classical Weyl Groups, John M. Bryden

Digitized Theses

First, we introduce a class of operations, called {dollar}\phi{dollar}-operations, on the representation rings of the classical Weyl groups {dollar}{lcub}\cal W{rcub}(B\sb{lcub}k{rcub}){dollar} and {dollar}{lcub}\cal W{rcub}(D\sb{lcub}k{rcub}){dollar}. These operations are shown to generate the exterior power operations in the representation rings {dollar}R({lcub}\cal W{rcub}(B\sb{lcub}k{rcub})){dollar} and {dollar}R({lcub}\cal W{rcub}(D\sb{lcub}k{rcub})).{dollar} Given integers l, h satisfying {dollar}l + h=k{dollar}, let {dollar}\beta{dollar} be a partition of l and {dollar}\alpha{dollar} be a partition of h. The main theorem shows that induced representations of the form {dollar}{dollar}Ind\sbsp{lcub}{lcub}\cal W{rcub}\sb{lcub}\beta,\alpha{rcub}{rcub}{lcub}{lcub}\cal W{rcub}(B\sb{lcub}k{rcub}){rcub}1,{dollar}{dollar}where {dollar}{lcub}\cal W{rcub}\sb{lcub}B,a{rcub}=\prod{lcub}\cal W{rcub}(B\sb{lcub}B{rcub})\times\prod{lcub}\cal W{rcub}(A\sb{lcub}a{rcub}),{dollar} can be expressed as an algebraic combination of {dollar}\phi{dollar}-operations acting on the two canonical induced representations {dollar}{dollar}\eqalign{lcub}X\sb{lcub}k{rcub}&= Ind\sbsp{lcub}{lcub}\cal W{rcub}(B\sb{lcub}k-1{rcub})\times{lcub}\cal …

The Effects Of Self-Referencing In The Processing Of Linear Ordering Relations, Hsiao H. D'Ailly Jan 1991

The Effects Of Self-Referencing In The Processing Of Linear Ordering Relations, Hsiao H. D'Ailly

Digitized Theses

The purpose of the present research was to investigate the effects of self referencing in the processing of linear ordering relations in a task designed to simulate certain aspects of classroom mathematics instruction. In each of three experiments, undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory psychology course were asked to read a series of paragraphs each of which contained a 5-term linear ordering relation (e.g., {dollar}\rm A>B>C>D>E).{dollar} After this information was encoded, subjects were asked to make pair-wise comparisons of these 5 terms. Two major factors were tested: the inclusion of a "You" term (Self-Referencing) among the …

Some Results On Minors For Graphs And Matroids., Lawrence Alan Wargo Jan 1991

Some Results On Minors For Graphs And Matroids., Lawrence Alan Wargo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation solves some problems relating to the theory of graphs. The first type of problem considered concerns the structure of various classes of graphs which arise naturally from outerplanar graphs. These problems are motivated by Chartrand and Harary's well-known characterization of outerplanar graphs. This theorem states that K$\sb4$ and K$\sb{2,3}$ are the only non-outerplanar graphs for which both G$\\$e, the deletion of the edge e from the graph G, and G/e, the contraction of the edge e, are outerplanar for all edges e of G. Following Gubser's characterization of almost-planar graphs, we begin our study of graphs related to …

On The Construction And Application Of Certain Special Polarizations In Nilpotent Lie Algebras., James Donald Moss Jr Jan 1991

On The Construction And Application Of Certain Special Polarizations In Nilpotent Lie Algebras., James Donald Moss Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation arose from efforts to prove the following conjecture, which generalizes to nilpotent Lie groups a weak form of the classical Paley-Wiener theorem for $\IR\sp{n}$: Let N be any connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group with unitary dual N, and let $\varphi\in L\sbsp{c}{\infty}(N)$. Suppose that there exists a subset E $\subset$ N of positive Plancherel measure such that $\\varphi(\pi)$ = 0 for all $\pi\in$ E, where $\\varphi(\pi)$ is the operator-valued Fourier transform of $\varphi$. Then $\varphi$ = 0 almost everywhere on N. The writer has been able to prove a slightly weakened form of the conjecture for a large …

A New Condition For Arithmetic Equivalence., Donna Joy Stuart Jan 1991

A New Condition For Arithmetic Equivalence., Donna Joy Stuart

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two algebraic number fields K, K$\sp\prime$ are said to be arithmetically equivalent if every prime number p has the same splitting type in K as in K$\sp\prime$. Many equivalent formulations of arithmetic equivalence are known. The best-known of these is: K and K$\sp\prime$ are arithmetically equivalent if and only if their Dedekind zeta functions coincide. This dissertation provides a surprising new formulation: K and K$\sp\prime$ are arithmetically equivalent if and only if for all prime numbers p, outside a given set of density zero, the number $g\sb K (p)$ of prime factors of p in K is equal to the …

On Separable Torsion- Free Modules Of Countable Density Character, R. Gobel, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 1991

On Separable Torsion- Free Modules Of Countable Density Character, R. Gobel, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

The endomorphism algebras of modules of large cardinalities have been extensively studied in recent years using the combinatorial set-theoretic techniques of Shelah-the so-called black-box methods (see, e.g., [4, 5, 151). Despite the spectacular success of these methods, they are not suitable for realization theorems at small carinalities. Of course at the level of countability (or rather more generally for cardinals ~2’~) there are in some cases the original dramatic results of A. L. S. Corner [ 1, 2, 31 and the more recent generalizations of Gobel and May [ 111. Very recently the study of realization problems at cardinalities

Success In Written Expression: A Case Study, Susan Flowers Hamby Jan 1991

Success In Written Expression: A Case Study, Susan Flowers Hamby

Theses and Dissertations

In order to receive a high school diploma, a student in any Georgia high school must pass the Georgia Basic Skills Test in three areas: Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. The subject of this case study is an eighteen-year-old male student who after four attempts passed the Writing portion of this test. Because this is a case study, the findings are reported in a nontraditional manner using a narrative style with first person commentary.

Much of the data in this case study were collected through interviews with the subject referred to as Tim, his mother, a school examiner, and several of …

A New Construction Of Subgroups Inducing Isomorphic Representations., Patricia Wright Beaulieu Jan 1991

A New Construction Of Subgroups Inducing Isomorphic Representations., Patricia Wright Beaulieu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation provides a method to construct infinite families of triples ($H\sb{i},H\sbsp{i}{\prime},G\sb{i}$) consisting of two non-conjugate subgroups $H\sb{i}$ and $H\sbsp{i}{\prime}$ of a finite group $G\sb{i}$ whose trivial representations induce isomorphic representations of $G\sb{i}$. Such triples are important in number theory, differential geometry, and group theory.

Improving Multiplication Mastery Using A Multi-Sensory Approach With Severely Emotionally Handicapped Students Grades Four Through Six, Susan S. Klingler Jan 1991

Improving Multiplication Mastery Using A Multi-Sensory Approach With Severely Emotionally Handicapped Students Grades Four Through Six, Susan S. Klingler

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The focus of this practicum was to improve the learning of multiplication mastery demonstrated low on tests and teacher/student assessment. As a corollary aim, an overall increase in self esteem and behavioral improvement during math class was projected.

Twelve weeks of implementation included computer assisted instruction (CAI) with a multiplication program, making and working with flash cards, bi-weekly timings on math facts, completing drill sheets, playing various instructional multiplication games and use of manipulative devices. As supplementation progressed, students were encouraged to spend more time on the activities in an effort to master the times tables (0-12). Behavioral charts were …

Cooperative Learning On Mathematical Problem Solving: Reflections By A Traditional Teacher And Her Students, Diana Metsisto Dec 1990

Cooperative Learning On Mathematical Problem Solving: Reflections By A Traditional Teacher And Her Students, Diana Metsisto

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

As our society becomes more technologically complex, the educational system preparing our students to become citizens of this society must adapt to met changing demands. Mathematical literacy of the 21st century will require a different model of mathematics education than that which served in the past. This thesis argues for a model of mathematics education which includes as key components: problem solving, question posing, cooperative learning, concrete manipulatives, and teaching for thinking. This new model sets forth guidelines for a facilitative approach to the teaching of mathematics as opposed to the more traditional, authoritative model. This facilitative model is based …
