Pierce-Engel Hybrid Expansions, Andrea Sutyak
Pierce-Engel Hybrid Expansions, Andrea Sutyak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pierce and Engel expansions are representations of numbers between 0 and 1 as sums of unitary fractions (of alternating signs in the case of Pierce) whose denominators are built multiplicatively, choosing the successive factors greedily. We show some results for Pierce expansions, and investigate the idea of hybrid expansions, which are built similarly but without regard to the signs of the terms.
Preparation For High School Mathematics Reform In The Northeast Georgia Resa District: A Stage Of Concerns Approach To Examining Professional Learning, Kay Smith Haugen
Preparation For High School Mathematics Reform In The Northeast Georgia Resa District: A Stage Of Concerns Approach To Examining Professional Learning, Kay Smith Haugen
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was two-fold. The first purpose was to examine the longitudinal concerns of a cohort of high school mathematics teachers in the Northeast Georgia Regional Educational Services Agency (RESA) district about implementation of the Georgia Performance Standards. The second purpose was to explore relationships among their Stages of Concerns profiles, demographic factors, and professional learning experiences provided by institute instructors. The study examined Implementation of Georgia Performance Standards in High School Mathematics as a change innovation using the Concerns-Based Adoption Model. The study utilized a mixed methods timeseries research design. Quantitative data were collected using the …

It's All About The Teachers: Bank Street's Math For Teachers As Professional Development, Robin Hummel
Graduate Student Independent Studies
This work describes a professional development initiative that was based on the graduate course, Mathematics for Teachers in Diverse and Inclusive Educational Settings (K-6), taught by Linda Metnetsky at Bank Street College of Education. The author wrote and implemented this professional development initiative for teachers in her former district: a large, middle class, suburban school district outside of Philadelphia. It consisted of six full day sessions, held from October through April during the 2004-05 school year. Eleven teachers from third, fourth, and fifth grades participated, and the impact of this professional development on two participants is the focus of this …
Cycles In Graph Theory And Matroids, Ju Zhou
Cycles In Graph Theory And Matroids, Ju Zhou
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A circuit is a connected 2-regular graph. A cycle is a graph such that the degree of each vertex is even. A graph G is Hamiltonian if it has a spanning circuit, and Hamiltonian-connected if for every pair of distinct vertices u, v ∈ V( G), G has a spanning (u, v)-path. A graph G is s-Hamiltonian if for any S ⊆ V (G) of order at most s, G -- S has a Hamiltonian-circuit, and s-Hamiltonian connected if for any S ⊆ V( G) of order at most s, G -- S is Hamiltonian-connected. In this dissertation, we investigated …
A Brief Study Of Some Aspects Of Babylonian Mathematics, Tom Zara
A Brief Study Of Some Aspects Of Babylonian Mathematics, Tom Zara
Senior Honors Theses
Beginning over 4000 years ago, the Babylonians were discovering how to use mathematics to perform functions of daily life and to evolve as a dominant civilization. Since the beginning of the 1800s, about half a million Babylonian tablets have been discovered, fewer than five hundred of which are mathematical in nature. Scholars translated these texts by the end of the 19th century. It is from these tablets that we gain an appreciation for the Babylonians’ apparent understanding of mathematics and the manner in which they used some key mathematical concepts. Through this thesis, the author will provide background information about …

Reflective Intensions: Two Foundational Decision-Points In Mathematics, Law, And Economics, Robert C. Hockett
Reflective Intensions: Two Foundational Decision-Points In Mathematics, Law, And Economics, Robert C. Hockett
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
This Article, transcribed from a symposium talk given by the author, examines two critical junctures at which foundational decisions must be made in three areas of theoretical inquiry - mathematics, law, and economics. The first such juncture is that which the Article labels the "arbitrary versus criterial choice" juncture. This is the decision point at which one must select between what is typically called an "algorithmic," "principled," "law-like," or "intensionalist" understanding of those concepts which figure foundationally in the discipline in question on the one hand, and a "randomized," "combinatorial," or "extensionalist" such understanding on the other hand.
The second …
The Discriminant Analysis Used By The Irs To Predict Profitable Individual Tax Return Audits, Amber Torrey
The Discriminant Analysis Used By The Irs To Predict Profitable Individual Tax Return Audits, Amber Torrey
Honors Projects in Mathematics
This paper discusses past and current methods the IRS uses to determine which individual income tax returns to audit. The IRS currently uses the discriminant function to give all individual tax returns two scores; one based on whether it should be audited or not and one based on if the return is likely to have unreported income. The discriminant function is determined by the IRS’s National Research Program, which takes a sample of returns and ensures their accuracy. Previously, the function was determined by the IRS’s Taxpayer Compliance Measurement Program. However, this was too burdensome and time consuming for taxpayers. …

Teacher As Designer: A Framework For Teacher Analysis Of Mathematical Model-Eliciting Activities, Margret A. Hjalmarson, Heidi Diefes-Dux
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
The study investigated tool development by three middle school mathematics teachers. The tools they designed were intended to support the use of model-eliciting activities (a form of instruction related to problem-based learning) and particularly the students’ presentations of their solutions for the whole class. The study examined the design and purposes for the presentation tools and resulted in a framework for categorizing teachers’ purposes for tools. The framework addressed the unit of analysis for the tools (individual students or groups of students) and the nature of teachers’ purposes for the tools. Design research was used as a theoretical perspective for conducting …

Innovations in Math Technology
In the last 20 years, computer technology having mathematical capability has been developed, improved, and become widely available, but textbook presentations are still largely free of any discussion that might require technology. Technology could be used in mathematical instruction for student drill and practice, for instructor demonstrations that promote conceptual understanding, or for the exploration of mathematical ideas, but software is often designed to be pedagogically generic, leaving its use to the creativity of the instructor. Technological solutions for local machines can be quite extensive, but cost and time constraints then limit availability for student use. The internet has the …

A Review Of The Literature On Mathematics And Science Teacher Quality, Johnna J. Bolyard, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham
A Review Of The Literature On Mathematics And Science Teacher Quality, Johnna J. Bolyard, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
A large body of literature exists that examines teacher quality characteristics and the relationship of indicators of those characteristics to teacher effectiveness. This existing research literature broadly views teacher quality research without illuminating specific areas of teacher quality, such as mathematics and science. In an effort to focus the literature base for researchers and policymakers more narrowly, this review specifically examines teacher quality as it relates to mathematics and science teaching and learning. The review highlights key policy and practitioner perspectives, provides a focused synthesis on current research findings on mathematics and science teacher quality, and suggests areas of research …
