The Principles Of Effective Teaching Student Teachershave The Opportunity To Learn In An Alternativestudent Teaching Structure, Danielle Rose Divis Mar 2016

The Principles Of Effective Teaching Student Teachershave The Opportunity To Learn In An Alternativestudent Teaching Structure, Danielle Rose Divis

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that the focus of mathematics student teaching programs is typically classroom management and non-mathematics specific teaching strategies. However, the redesigned BYU student teaching structure has proven to help facilitate a greater focus on mathematics-specific pedagogy and student mathematics during post-lesson reflection meeting conversations. This study analyzed what specific principles of NCTM’s standards of effective teaching were discussed in the reflection meetings of this redesigned structure. This study found that the student teachers extensively discussed seven of the eight principles NCTM considers to be necessary for effective mathematics teaching. Other pedagogical principles pertaining to student mathematical learning not …

Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics: Audit Of Curricula, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer) Mar 2016

Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics: Audit Of Curricula, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)

Assessment and Reporting

An early step in developing an assessment framework for the Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics (SEA-PLM) was determining how to design and construct a single assessment program across all ASEAN member countries. This step needed to take account of the similarities and differences in the curriculum frameworks in each country for the four domains to be assessed through SEA-PLM: Mathematics, Reading, Writing and Global Citizenship. This account was achieved through an audit of the curriculum materials from 11 ASEAN countries, comprising those countries already participating in the SEA-PLM field trial, and others likely to join SEAPLM in the future. The …

2016: "Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Varying Car-Sharing Business Models", William Tong '17, Sachin Govind '16, Ankit Agarwal '17, David Xu '16, George Moe '17

Distinguished Student Work

A continually evolving field, the automotive industry consistently introduces a number of innovative technologies and services to ease the problem of transportation. One such service is termed Car-sharing. Car-sharing allows users to rent vehicles and use them for a short period of time without worrying about the additional costs associated with maintenance, fuel, and pollution, presenting a simple alternative to owning a car. Still an emerging concept, Car-sharing requires a great deal more analysis to fully understand the nuances and implications behind its implementation.

A Weak Galerkin Method For Parabolic Equations, Yajie Yu Feb 2016

A Weak Galerkin Method For Parabolic Equations, Yajie Yu

Theses and Dissertations

Parabolic equations have very broad applications in physics and engineering, such as heat diffusion and ocean acoustic propagation. Here we consider the 2D case with time dependent equations. Many numerical methods have been proposed to solve them, such as discontinuous Galerkin method, hybridized Galerkin method and so on. A weak Galerkin method is introduced by Dr. Wang and Dr. Ye by employing totally discontinuous functions in approximation space and an innovatively defined weak gradient operator which provide desirable flexibilities. In this thesis, we apply this method to solve parabolic equations. This method also has the energy conserva- tion property. Both continuous …

Generating Functions And Wilf Equivalence For Generalized Interval Embeddings, Russell Chamberlain, Garner Cochran, Sam Ginsburg, Brian K. Miceli, Manda Riehl, Chi Zhang

Mathematics Faculty Research

In 1999 in [J. Difference Equ. Appl. 5, 355–377], Noonan and Zeilberger extended the Goulden-Jackson Cluster Method to find generating functions of word factors. Then in 2009 in [Electron. J. Combin. 16(2), RZZ], Kitaev, Liese, Remmel and Sagan found generating functions for word embeddings and proved several results on Wilf-equivalence in that setting. In this article, the authors focus on generalized interval embeddings, which encapsulate both factors and embeddings, as well as the “space between” these two ideas. The authors present some results in the most general case of interval embeddings. Two special cases of …

Supplemental Instruction For Developmental Mathematics: Two-Year Summary, Olen Dias, Alice W. Cunningham, Loreto Porte

Publications and Research

Supplemental instruction—using trained peer tutors to conduct additional class sessions in a group-work format—has been in use for over forty years. However, its success in developmental mathematics has been inconclusive. In the two years since institution of the strategy for developmental mathematics students at Hostos Community College, overall results (n = 5403 students) show significantly improved course pass rates to at least a 99% confidence level. Although no significant course retention differences have yet appeared, academic success itself promotes future retention. The program has proved beneficial for the College’s developmental mathematics students and is being expanded. Future research including …

A Meeting Of Minds: An Alternate Humor For Teaching Mathematics To Non-Stem Majors, Paul H. Grawe

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

John Allen Paulos argued essentially for three forms of humor dear to mathematics: Incongruity, Gotcha, and Word Play. Unfortunately, these three are often combative forms and easily drive non-STEM majors out of mathematics and statistics.

William Dunham in The Mathematical Universe shows how a fine mathematician can use humor to draw non-specialists in. Central to Dunham’s success is his use of Sympathetic Pain humor, which creates softer synthetic Reconciler, Consoler, or Bridgebuilder humor styles.

The Role Of Black Colleges In The Development Of Mathematicians, Viveka Borum, Adriel Adon Hilton, Erica Walker Jan 2016

The Role Of Black Colleges In The Development Of Mathematicians, Viveka Borum, Adriel Adon Hilton, Erica Walker

Journal of Research Initiatives

Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are home to almost 400,000 of the nation’s college and university population and account for nearly 25% of degrees conferred to African Americans, according to Hale (2006). They have been the launching pads for three-fourths of African Americans who hold doctorate degrees, three-fourths of Black officers in the military, and four-fifths of African American federal judges (Hale, 2006). In addition, fifty percent of African American faculty in predominantly White research universities received their bachelor’s degrees at an HBCU (Hale, 2006). These are significant percentages given the relatively small number of Black colleges and universities …

Does Comparing Informal And Formal Procedures Promote Mathematics Learning? The Benefits Of Bridging Depend On Attitudes Toward Mathematics, Shanta Hattikudur, Pooja G. Sidney, Martha W. Alibali Jan 2016

Does Comparing Informal And Formal Procedures Promote Mathematics Learning? The Benefits Of Bridging Depend On Attitudes Toward Mathematics, Shanta Hattikudur, Pooja G. Sidney, Martha W. Alibali

The Journal of Problem Solving

Students benefit from learning multiple procedures for solving the same or related problems. However, past research on comparison instruction has focused on comparing multiple formal procedures. This study investigated whether the benefits of comparing procedures extend to comparisons that involve informal and formal procedures. We also examined how learner characteristics, including prior knowledge and attitudes toward mathematics, affect learning from comparing procedures. We addressed these issues in college students' learning procedures for solving systems of equations problems in algebra. Learners who liked mathematics learned equally well whether they received comparison or sequential instruction. However, among learners who did not like …

A Teacher's Journey Through Multiplicative Thinking With Early Secondary Students, J O'Neill, L Day

Education Conference Papers

As part of the Reframing Mathematical Futures national project four WA secondary schools embarked on a journey to help students to become more able multiplicative thinkers, so that many areas of secondary mathematics would become more accessible to them. This involved targeted teaching within the regular mathematics classes. This paper is about the journey of one of these teachers.

Captain Zero . . . Hero Or Villain?, C Hurst, D Hurrell Jan 2016

Captain Zero . . . Hero Or Villain?, C Hurst, D Hurrell

Education Conference Papers

Our current research into children's multiplicative thinking has shown that children have the capacity to think multiplicatively and that some aspects of multiplicative thinking are more thoroughly understood than others. We look at a data set obtained over three classes in the same year level and explore the considerable variation in responses to several key questions on a multiplicative thinking quiz. The questions relate to the 'times bigger' notion in comparing numbers, the ability to use standard place value partitioning when operating, the ability to articulate what happens when numbers are multiplied and divided by powers of ten, and the …
