Self-Supervised Learning For Single-Molecule Localization Microscopy, Clare Minnerath

Mathematics & Computer Science Student Scholarship

Major: Mathematics and Computer Science

Faculty Mentor: Dr. Lynette Boos, Mathematics

We evaluate the ability of self-supervised deep learning for Poisson denoising of Single-Molecule Localization Microscopy (SMLM) in addition to the impact denoising can have on the ability to locate molecules within the Single-Molecule Localization Microscopy images. SMLM images are predominantly corrupted with Poisson noise. There is a need for a superior technique to provide accurate SMLM images in order for scientists to gain a better understanding of the functions of live cells at the nanoscale. By denoising SMLM images prior to the images undergoing the current state- of-the-art super-resolution …

Application Of Black-Scholes-Merton Model In Option Pricing And Intangibles Assets, Giang Nguyen-Hoang

Mathematics & Computer Science Student Scholarship

Major: Finance and Mathematics

Faculty Mentor: Dr. Joseph Shomberg, Mathematics

The Black-Scholes model was developed by Fisher Black and Myron Scholes in the 1970s to price stock options. Since then the model has been suited to price so-called intangible assets such as trademarks and patents. In this paper, we investigate the related Black-Scholes-Merton model and the relevant characteristics of patents in order to associate patents as real options. After describing patents as options, we apply the Black-Scholes-Merton model to the valuation of the intangible assets. Special attention is given to modeling volatility and the cost of delay in order to …

Numerical Simulation Of The Nagumo Equation By Finite Difference Method, Gabriel Garcia Apr 2020

Numerical Simulation Of The Nagumo Equation By Finite Difference Method, Gabriel Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

The Nagumo equation is an important nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation used to model the transmission of nerve impulses. In this thesis, traveling wave solutions to the Nagumo equation are studied. A pseudo-Crank-Nicolson finite difference scheme is developed to find numerical solutions. The exact solution of Kawahara and Tanaka is used to demonstrate the efficiency of the scheme. It is confirmed that the numerical errors, evaluated in the discrete maximum norm, converge in $O(\Delta x^2 + \Delta t)$, where $\Delta x$ and $\Delta t$ are spatial and temporal step sizes, respectively. More simulations with different initial conditions are conducted. In particular, it …

Approximate Solutions To The Allen-Cahn Equation Using The Finite Difference Method, Jamil Malik Villarreal Apr 2020

Approximate Solutions To The Allen-Cahn Equation Using The Finite Difference Method, Jamil Malik Villarreal

Theses and Dissertations

Seeking a deeper understanding of the world has been a driving factor in Applied Mathematics. From counting and measuring physical objects to developing equations and ratios that resemble patterns in nature, mathematics is used to interpret and explain the intricate structures that we observe everyday. The field of Applied Mathematics almost always involves setting up and then solving, or approximating solutions to, at least one partial differential equation that takes the physical and mathematical properties into consideration. This is the process of creating mathematical models. For this thesis, we will investigate approximate solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation whose analytic solution …

Teaching And Learning Of Fluid Mechanics, Ashwin Vaidya Apr 2020

Teaching And Learning Of Fluid Mechanics, Ashwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Fluid mechanics occupies a privileged position in the sciences; it is taught in various science departments including physics, mathematics, environmental sciences and mechanical, chemical and civil engineering, with each highlighting a different aspect or interpretation of the foundation and applications of fluids. Doll’s fluid analogy [5] for this idea is especially relevant to this issue: “Emergence of creativity from complex flow of knowledge—example of Benard convection pattern as an analogy—dissipation or dispersal of knowledge (complex knowledge) results in emergent structures, i.e., creativity which in the context of education should be thought of as a unique way to arrange information so …

We conducted qualitative content analysis of teachers’ responses to identify common trends regarding teaching mathematics …

Graceful Labelings Of Order Six Graphs, Samuel Kirk Apr 2020

Graceful Labelings Of Order Six Graphs, Samuel Kirk

Mathematics

Given a graph G with m edges, we can describe this graph as graceful or not. A graph that is graceful has a function f : V (G) → {0, 1, 2, ...m} so that distinct vertices receive distinct numbers and the set defined by {|f(u)−f(v)| : uv ∈ V (G)} is equivalent to the set {1, 2, 3, ...m}. Put simply, we want to be able to label the vertices of the graph in such a way where the absolute difference between the end vertices of an edge is unique. If there is a way to label the graph …

On Antimagic Labeling Of Lobsters, Ian Samsami, Joie Green, Brett Klepitch Apr 2020

On Antimagic Labeling Of Lobsters, Ian Samsami, Joie Green, Brett Klepitch

Mathematics

An antimagic labeling of a graph G with p edges is a function f: E(G) → {1,…,p} such that distinct edges receive distinct numbers and any two vertex sums are distinct, where a vertex sum is the sum of the labels of all edges incident to that vertex. A graph is antimagic if it has an antimagic labeling. In 1990, Hartsfield and Ringel conjectured every connected graph with at least three vertices is antimagic. The conjecture was confirmed for trees with at most one vertex of degree 2 and other classes of graphs including caterpillars …

Preservice Teachers’ Strategies For Interpreting Fractions Represented In Discrete And Continuous Models, Victoria Webster Apr 2020

Preservice Teachers’ Strategies For Interpreting Fractions Represented In Discrete And Continuous Models, Victoria Webster

Transformations: Research Papers

Teaching and learning fractions have been a focus of research in mathematics education for decades. Current practices of teaching fractions emphasize the partitioning perspective, or part-whole, to conceptualize fractions. Another approach to teaching fractions is measurement. The part-whole approach limits students’ conceptualization of fractions and impedes learning improper fractions, whereas the measurement approach has the potential to overcome these difficulties and supports learning improper fractions. In this study, 55 preservice teachers engaged in an intervention to reexamine fractions using a measurement perspective. Before and after the intervention, the preservice teachers were asked to interpret proper and improper fractions using discrete …

On The Mersenne Prime Numbers, Julia Vanlandingham Apr 2020

On The Mersenne Prime Numbers, Julia Vanlandingham

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

The prime numbers have been an important field of research for thousands of years and are intertwined with most other fields of mathematics. One topic that has piqued the interest of mathematicians young and old is the Mersenne prime numbers, which have applications in many mathematics and computer science fields. The Mersenne primes get a lot of attention because there is not much known about them. However, we do have a very simple primality test for Mersenne numbers, which is why the largest currently known primes are Mersenne primes. These primes are also very closely related to another class of …

Searching Games: A Bound For The Responder, Jose Garcia Apr 2020

Searching Games: A Bound For The Responder, Jose Garcia

Student Scholars Day Oral Presentations

A searching game with two unknowns and a lie involves two players, the responder and the questioner. Before the start of the game, the two parties predetermine an amount of numbers n to consider, and how many questions k the questioner can ask before the game ends with a victory (or loss) for the responder. The responder thinks of two secret numbers. The questioner asks questions of the form "How many of your two numbers are in the subset Q of the set {0,...,n-1}?", in an attempt to search and find what the two secret numbers are. If the questioner …

The Impact Of Feedback On Learning And Mindset For Female Students In Mathematics Using Comments To Improve Mindset And Learning In Math: A Professional Development Workshop, Elizabeth Christenson

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Research shows that the type of feedback given on math assessments can impact the learning and mindset of students. This is especially important for girls since fewer girls study higher level math even though they have the same capability for math as boys. Using comments instead of grades can improve mindset and give students the information they need to improve their learning. This project was strongly influenced by the work of Jo Boaler and Carol Dweck. In order to share this information with teachers and to provide support in developing the skill of giving comment feedback a set of professional …

A Case Study Exploring The Nature Of How Prekindergarten Teachers’ Mathematics Instruction Decisions Relate To Their Mathematics Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Raleta Summers Dawkins Apr 2020

A Case Study Exploring The Nature Of How Prekindergarten Teachers’ Mathematics Instruction Decisions Relate To Their Mathematics Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Raleta Summers Dawkins

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

The mathematics knowledge students develop in prekindergarten is key to their ability to make sense of more complex mathematics in the future (C. T. Cross, Woods, & Schweingruber, 2009; Ginsburg, Lee, & Boyd, 2008). Research continues to present evidence that there is a mathematics achievement gap between minoritized students living in lower socioeconomic communities compared to their peers before entering kindergarten (Arnold, Fisher, Doctroff, & Dobbs, 2002; Duncan et al., 2007; Sonnenschein & Galindo, 2015; Wang, 2010). The joint position statement issued by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics …

Small Quasi-Kernels In Hairy Tournaments, Jesse Hayes-Carver, Walter J. Witt Apr 2020

Small Quasi-Kernels In Hairy Tournaments, Jesse Hayes-Carver, Walter J. Witt

Mathematics

Let D = (V, E) be a digraph. A subset K of V is a quasi-kernel of D if K is an independent set in D and for every vertex v belonging to the set V – K, v is at most a distance of 2 from K. It is a well-known result of Chvátal and Lovász that every digraph has a quasi-kernel. In 1976, P. L. Erdős and L. A. Székely conjectured that if every vertex of D has a positive in-degree, then D has a quasi-kernel of size at most half the order of D. A tournament …

Higher Chow Cycles On The Jacobian Of Curves., Subham Sarkar Dr. Mar 2020

Higher Chow Cycles On The Jacobian Of Curves., Subham Sarkar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The following formula, usually called Beilinson’s formula — though independently due to Deligne as well — describes the motivic cohomology group of a smooth projective variety X over a number field as the group of extensions in a conjectured abelian category of mixed motives, MMQ.The aim of this thesis is to describe this construction in the case of the motivic cohomology group of the Jacobian of a curve. The first work in this direction is due to Harris [Har83] and Pulte [Pul88], [Hai87]. They showed that the Abel-Jacobi image of the modified diagonal cycle on the triple product of a …

A Mathematical Model Of Speeding, Jared Ott, Xavier Pérez Giménez Mar 2020

A Mathematical Model Of Speeding, Jared Ott, Xavier Pérez Giménez

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Crime is often regarded as nonsensical, impulsive, and irrational. These conjectures are pointed, though conversation about the pros and cons of crime does not happen often. People point to harsh fines, jail times, and life restrictions as their reason for judgement, stating that the trade-offs are far too unbalanced to participate in illicit activity. Yet, everyday people commit small crimes, sometimes based on hedonistic desires, other times based on a rational thought process.

Speeding seems to be one of those that almost all people commit at least once during their life. Our work hopes to make an incremental improvement on …
