Exploring Subcultural Perceptions That Influence Change Success Within A Hybrid Organization, Kevin Morgan Sorbello

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Global change-failure rates remain over 70%, despite over a half-century of research, theory development, and mitigation strategies. Although researchers studying the problem of change failure recognize that subcultural perceptions influence change success, especially in hybrid organizations where subcultural differences are more profound, the perceptions that predispose a subculture to support or resist organizational change remain relatively unknown. The purpose of this exploratory case study was to address the problem of the high cost of change failure by identifying perceptions that influence change success within a maritime organization. The study'€™s conceptual framework was founded on the interpretive paradigm and social constructivist …

Picking Up The Pieces: Managing People During And After A Reorganization, Catherine B. Soehner

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Libraries need to change rapidly in response to advances in technology, expectations of users, funding, and other pressures from both inside and outside the library. Often library administration/management reorganizes personnel, duties, and departments to accomplish new goals and to shift focus of library services. Both during and after a reorganization, employees respond to the changes in a wide variety of ways, ranging from acceptance and positivity to anger and resistance. Fortunately, administrators and managers have a variety of tools available to help employees deal with change and to move them toward success. There are many books and articles on the …

Exploring The Potential Of Ppp In Philippine Irrigation, Arlene Inocencio, Marites Tiongco, Kenji Yoshinaga, Anna Bella Siriban-Manalang

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Irrigation systems in many Asian countries including the Philippines remain heavily dependent on public funds and are mostly unsustainable. Systematic degradation due to poor and inadequate management, maintenance and operation, and limited public funding calls for a new approach. Governments have implemented participatory irrigation management, which evolved into an irrigation management transfer (IMT). While progress has been slow, the IMT appear to present some improvements in the irrigation sector. However, the lack of incentives and motivation for irrigators associations (IAs) to become autonomous and irrigation agencies’ unwillingness to let go further slows the growth of the irrigation sector. For the …

An Investigation Into Full Range Leadership And Leadership Development Methods In Public Parks And Recreation Organizations In California, Heather Vilhauer

Doctoral Dissertations

As current public parks and recreation organizational leaders age and retire, it will become important for qualified professionals to be prepared to fill these positions. A study by Hurd and McLean (2004) examined the perceived competencies of CEOs in public park and recreation organizations. Leadership and management were rated as the most important competencies for CEOs. However, these perceived competencies are not only for the CEOs; all professionals employed in parks and recreation, from administrative leaders to direct service providers, must demonstrate leadership to succeed in their positions (Russell, 2005). Thus, it is crucial for parks and recreation organizations to …

An Exploration Of The Causes Of Success And Failure Of Managed Change, Michael Moore Jan 2018

An Exploration Of The Causes Of Success And Failure Of Managed Change, Michael Moore

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Change management (CM) and organizational development are mature industries with decades of research and development. Yet, failure rates stated for organizational change initiatives remain high at 70%. This failure rate suggests that 30% of change initiatives were successful, but no reports of these successes were found in the literature. The overarching question considered the experiences of change leaders of successful CM initiatives. The conceptual framework for this research consisted of change models defined by Burke, Kotter, Schein, and others. The primary purpose of this study was to identify the strategies used by successful change leaders. 10 phone interviews with senior …

Employee Perceptions Of Leadership Styles That Influence Workplace Performance, Carla Wren Jan 2018

Employee Perceptions Of Leadership Styles That Influence Workplace Performance, Carla Wren

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The leadership style found in government is usually diverse in nature, with the chain of command being top-down and focused on bureaucracy. There are some leadership styles that can adversely impact or vastly improve workplace performance. This descriptive phenomenological study was used to understand employee perceptions of leadership styles that affect their workplace performance. Bass's transformational leadership theory guided this study to explore how a supervisor's leadership style impacts an employee's workplace performance. The primary research question focused on positive and negative perceptions employees held related to supervisors' leadership behaviors and characteristics. The data collection was derived from in-depth interviews …

The Performance Implication Of Obsessive Work Passion: Unpacking The Moderating And Mediating Mechanisms From A Conservation Of Resources Perspective, Dejun Tony Kong, Violet T. Ho Jan 2018

The Performance Implication Of Obsessive Work Passion: Unpacking The Moderating And Mediating Mechanisms From A Conservation Of Resources Perspective, Dejun Tony Kong, Violet T. Ho

Management Faculty Publications

Work passion is an important determinant of work performance. While harmonious work passion (HWP) shows its consistent predictive value, obsessive work passion (OWP) appears to have a mixed relationship with work performance. To address this puzzle, we integrate research on OWP and emotional exhaustion with conservation of resources (COR) theory. Specifically, we argue that OWP determines emotional exhaustion, whose relationship with work performance is attenuated by leader-member exchange (LMX). By conducting a field study with a sample of 262 U.S. employees, we found supportive evidence, even when controlling for psychological detachment from work. The findings somewhat reconcile the inconsistent results …

Management And The Digital Transformation Of An Institution's Identity In The Field Of Education, Katarzyna Baliga-Nicholson

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

The subject of the article is to show the relationship between the management of an educational organization and changes related to digital transformation. Emerging meanings of education present in the digital knowledge portals are analysed in conjunction to attitudes towards education in an international organization. Qualitative research (interviews and network ethnography) allowed the author to draw conclusions related to management theory, from a neo-institutional perspective. The research shows that digital transformation should be considered as a catalyst for changes that penetrate deep areas of institutional identity, prompting organizations to redefine their goals. The need to restructure the traditionally understood educational …

Corporate Psychopathy: Examining The Relation Between Corporate Psychopaths And Employee Work-Life Balance, Stephen Michael Schenck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The thesis examined Corporate Psychopaths (CP) since their impact on an organization can be large. Particularly, this thesis focused on the relationship between managers perceived to be CPs and work and personal life balance. It was hypothesized that employees who perceive their supervisors to be high in characteristics of CP will report (a) less satisfaction with work and personal life balance and (b) increased levels of psychological distress on measures of depression, anxiety, and stress. A US based sample was collected using MTurk because companies are hesitant to allow research on CPs. Workers who reported having a CPs as a …

Women In Leadership: A Comparative Case Study On Successful Leadership, Christine Newcomb

Honors College Theses

The purpose of this report is to understand what makes a successful female leader. Since there are so few women in executive level positions, especially chief executive officer positions, I became interested in analyzing how successful leaders act in contrast with how unsuccessful leaders act. To analyze, I will focus on the leadership of two prominent businesswomen, one who has been successful in their tenure, and one who has been unsuccessful. Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, Inc. has been successful throughout her tenure, while Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo has been unsuccessful in turning the company around. I will …

Leveraging Academic Partnerships To Improve Logistics At Nonprofit Organizations, Andrew S. Manikas, James R. Kroes, Thomas F. Gattiker

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article presents the results of a partnership between a nonprofit organization and a team of academic researchers that developed a low-cost spreadsheet-based tool that allows organizations to effectively schedule vehicle operations. Specifically, the tool (1) handles the real-world constraints present in moderately complex logistics environments; and (2) uses general computing hardware and software that is already deployed in most organizations, thereby rendering the solution radically low cost (effectively free). We deployed this tool to a humanitarian organization, the Idaho Foodbank, which realized a substantial improvement in its fleet efficiency and a corresponding reduction in route-planning time. The methodology used …

As organizations expand geographically, and especially when expanding globally, they often find it necessary, or more effective, to develop Centers of Excellence (CoE). If properly structured these centers can reduce cost, improve efficiency, leverage organizational assets, and often improve levels of organizational innovation. This is the next installment in a series of articles started in the first issues of the JMI exploring these very challenging issues (Coughlan & Bernstein, 2015). In this installment the authors will specifically address issues surrounding leadership, integrated governance model, standardization, continuous improvement, business continuity, and managing through hard target metrics. This article assumes that the …
