The Reading Rooms: Reading For Pleasure In The Literature Classroom, Kalila Bohsali Apr 2024

The Reading Rooms: Reading For Pleasure In The Literature Classroom, Kalila Bohsali

English Language and Literature ETDs

The act of reading is the primary thing the literature classroom is concerned with and that is what this project seeks to claim and to understand, specifically the practice and process of reading for pleasure. This dissertation seeks to understand reading as a process, and reading for pleasure and to propose that students and instructors would benefit from paying more attention to reading for pleasure in the literature classroom, and being more transparent in how reading for pleasure is communicated as a shared value. Through a grounded theory interview project and an in-depth exploration of the different "rooms" in which …

“The Geopoetics Of An Undiscovered Continent: Eurasianism As A Writing Practice”, John Anthony Stachelski Apr 2024

“The Geopoetics Of An Undiscovered Continent: Eurasianism As A Writing Practice”, John Anthony Stachelski

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Drawing on extensive archival research and a comprehensive body of scholarship, this dissertation offers a critical reimagining of early 20th-century Eurasianism through the prism of literature and art. Beginning with the proto-Eurasianist schema introduced by Konstantin Leontiev in the 19th century, I argue that the influence of his deeply aestheticized combination of politics and religious thought is essential to understanding the work of Eurasianism’s founders Petr Savitsky and Petr Suvchinsky, the figures around whom the ideology’s major split occurred. This dissertation challenges the way Eurasianism has often been understood and portrayed in scholarship, and simultaneously presents an original argument about …

Poetics Of The Letter: Translation And Correspondence In Augusto De Campos And Ana Cristina Cesar, Craig Osterbrock Apr 2024

Poetics Of The Letter: Translation And Correspondence In Augusto De Campos And Ana Cristina Cesar, Craig Osterbrock

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines the poetics of translation of Augusto de Campos (1931- ) and Ana Cristina Cesar (1952-1983), two of Brazil’s most important poet-translators of the second half of the twentieth century. I argue that their respective poetics of translation can be interpreted as a form of correspondence in which the translator corresponds with the author of the source text and with the potential reader of the target text. The focus of Augusto’s response to the demands of this double correspondence is the “letter” understood as the materiality of the source and target text. His response to the source text …

Reading Sonority: Heian Songbooks And The Japanese Poetic Tradition, James Scanlon Apr 2024

Reading Sonority: Heian Songbooks And The Japanese Poetic Tradition, James Scanlon

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines Heian period kayō “songs'' and their textual medium, fuhon, vernacular “songbooks.” Kayō and fuhon constitute a corpus of vernacular songs as well as a body of texts that inscribe popular banquet and ritual court songs produced at the height of vernacular literary production in the Heian period (ca. 9—13 c.). Historically, fuhon have been regarded as peripheral to the contemporaneous literary milieu, predominantly overlooked as reflections of aural performance. I argue that this view misconstrues fuhon as texts composed orally, instead of as oral texts. Drawing upon an analysis of extant manuscripts and commentaries, I show that …

L’Autobiographie Intellectuelle De V. Y. Mudimbe Et Les Enjeux De La Différence, Justin Bisanswa Jan 2024

L’Autobiographie Intellectuelle De V. Y. Mudimbe Et Les Enjeux De La Différence, Justin Bisanswa

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Based on Les corps glorieux des mots et des êtres. Esquisse d’un jardin africain à la bénédictine, this text would like to analyze, at the confluence of sociology and rhetoric, the modalities (with their variations and their extensions) by which V. Y. Mudimbe broadens intellectual autobiography to other modes of writing and functions as a dialogic space between poetry and prose, experience and fantasy, reality and imagination. Retracing his pathway, Mudimbe makes his text a journey within oneself, a quest for the “absolute elsewhere” or a quest for the total Self. A feeling of lack emerges which explains this …

From Bushwick To Portland: Bori Girls Of The Diaspora Revolutionizing The Puerto Rican Coming-Of-Age Narrative, Lily V. Alvarado Jan 2024

From Bushwick To Portland: Bori Girls Of The Diaspora Revolutionizing The Puerto Rican Coming-Of-Age Narrative, Lily V. Alvarado

Dissertations and Theses

Trailblazing Puerto Rican women in the diaspora have challenged dominant imagery and fought against patriarchy, U.S. imperialism, and white supremacy through their writing. Writers like Esmeralda Santiago and Nicholasa Mohr have transformed the literary canon via the bildungsroman, highlighting the unique struggles of Boricua girlhood and proving that our stories matter. Two prominent female Boricua writers today, Elisabet Velasquez and Gabby Rivera, have raised the baton that has been passed down to them and revolutionized the Diasporican literary canon. In their respective texts, When We Make It: A Nuyorican Novel and Juliet Takes a Breath, Velasquez and Rivera highlight the …

Falling Down The Rabbit Hole: World Building In Ya Literature, Claire Webb Dec 2023

Falling Down The Rabbit Hole: World Building In Ya Literature, Claire Webb

Undergraduate Honors Theses

World building is a key component to many young adult novels, but what is world building and what are some different styles and techniques that authors use when constructing fictional universes? In this thesis, Falling Down the Rabbit Hole: World Building Techniques in YA Literature, I will examine Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (1865), The Princess Bride by William Goldman (1973), and my own unpublished novel, The Sun Kingdom, to compare different techniques and styles of world building. These works will be explored through the aspect of world building, focusing specifically on the importance of the geography, language, …

Going Urban: The Jewish Experience Of The Metropolis In Early 20th Century Literature, Ariel Yehudith Pridan Oct 2023

Going Urban: The Jewish Experience Of The Metropolis In Early 20th Century Literature, Ariel Yehudith Pridan

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This study delves into urban Jewish praxis and its impact on the production of urban space in three literary texts composed within the first four decades of the 20th century: the novella “Min HaMeitzar” [“Out of the Depths”] (1908) by Hebrew writer Yosef Haim Brenner, the novel Nokh alemen [“The End of Everything”] (1913) by Yiddish writer Dovid Bergelson, and the novel Hiob: Roman eines einfachen Mannes [“Job: The Story of a Simple Man”] (1930) by German-Jewish writer Joseph Roth. The literary readings presented in this study strive to elucidate the literary production of urban space as a means of …

Critical Literacy And Student Engagement: Disrupting The Canon In The Secondary English Classroom, Katherine Burdick Ramp Oct 2023

Critical Literacy And Student Engagement: Disrupting The Canon In The Secondary English Classroom, Katherine Burdick Ramp

Theses and Dissertations

Canonical literature is typically featured on the required texts list of secondary English classes while culturally relevant literature is frequently eschewed. Students struggle to understand and connect with the canonical literature as there are limited cultural connections that are relevant to their lives. As a result of this lack of culturally relevant literature in modern English curriculums, there has been a decrease in student engagement. The purpose of this study was to determine whether students’ engagement and their academic performance increased through the inclusion of these culturally relevant texts. Two research questions guided this study: (1) What effect does the …

Truth And Knowledge In A Literary Text And Beyond: Lydia Chukovskaya’S Sofia Petrovna At The Intersections Between Selves, Culture, And Paratext, Angelina Rubina Oct 2023

Truth And Knowledge In A Literary Text And Beyond: Lydia Chukovskaya’S Sofia Petrovna At The Intersections Between Selves, Culture, And Paratext, Angelina Rubina

Theses and Dissertations

Although Lydia Chukovskaya’s novella Sofia Petrovna (1965) is not considered to be an autobiographical work, the life story of its protagonist, Sofia Petrovna, and the life of Lydia Chukovskaya herself have certain parallels. Chukovskaya’s very own fate, which she described in the foreword to the novella and in her other biographical works, is often viewed inseparably from the novella. However, among the many connections between the fictional fate of Sofia Petrovna and the real fate of Lydia Chukovskaya, one aspect that has not been properly explored by the critics is the “dialogue” between the author and the protagonist with respect …

The Words. Or Holes. Or Both: Writing As An Integrative Methodology For Trauma, Daniel A. Castle Aug 2023

The Words. Or Holes. Or Both: Writing As An Integrative Methodology For Trauma, Daniel A. Castle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project seeks to identify methods authors have used to integrate their traumatic experiences. My work will analyze the genre of War Literature and specific authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and Kurt Vonnegut to explore the way writers describe the trauma of combat. Using insights from neuroscience and psychology, I will expand the field of Cognitive Literary Studies from a focus on the reader to a focus on the writer by linking neurological functions with narrative tools.

Trauma-Informed Teaching Of Literature To Multilingual Learner Refugees: In Search For Balance Between Cultural Responsiveness And Curriculum Sensitivity, Ekaterina Midgette, Jordan González Jul 2023

Trauma-Informed Teaching Of Literature To Multilingual Learner Refugees: In Search For Balance Between Cultural Responsiveness And Curriculum Sensitivity, Ekaterina Midgette, Jordan González

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

The unprecedented refugee crisis since the onset of the pandemic changed the demographics of the student population and recontextualized culturally responsive literacy education. Many Multilingual Learner refugee students entering our classrooms bring with them experiences of mass exodus that have direct implications for teaching and learning. It is imperative to identify culturally responsive pedagogies that balance cultural representation with sensitivity toward multifaceted trauma endured by Multilingual Learner refugees. Using an ecological perspective as a theoretical framework, we examine tensions and critical considerations in choosing culturally responsive children’s and young adult literature as they apply to the context of three contemporary …

"Love Doesn't Cancel Colonialism": Land, Lesbians, And Settler Colonialism, K. J. Janeschek May 2023

"Love Doesn't Cancel Colonialism": Land, Lesbians, And Settler Colonialism, K. J. Janeschek

English

This thesis examines the relationship between lesbians, land, and settler colonialism through an analysis of several texts written about Antarctica by lesbians. In the introduction, this thesis identifies the three fields of study which it draws upon--rural queer studies, queer nature studies, and queer indigenous studies--and notes the absence of settler colonialism as a point of analysis in rural queer studies despite the field's focus on the relationship between queer people and land. The following section, "Lesbians, Land, and Settler Homonationalism," provides both historical background of lesbian land-based movements such as the landdykes and theoretical considerations important for the thesis, …

Put Down That Book! Producing Poetry To Center Students As Organic Intellectuals, Jacqueline E. Boland May 2023

Put Down That Book! Producing Poetry To Center Students As Organic Intellectuals, Jacqueline E. Boland

Master's Projects and Capstones

Schools are often sites of hegemony, where certain knowledge and voices are prioritized over others. This hierarchy frequently discounts students as producers of their own knowledge, ignoring the wisdom gleaned from their lived experiences, diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, and cultural communities. While the study of literature inside a high school English classroom can be fruitful for students to acquire empathy and perspective, it is only effective when it is equitable. Educators must implement diverse representation in narratives, characters, authors and texts to represent students whose identities exist at the margins. Positioning work by Women of Color in the classroom …

The Domestic Worker In Latinx Fiction: The Discursive Formation Of Latinidad, Constance Von Igel De Mello May 2023

The Domestic Worker In Latinx Fiction: The Discursive Formation Of Latinidad, Constance Von Igel De Mello

English (MA) Theses

The figure of the domestic worker in Latinx and Latin American fiction is a prominent character, permeating multiple genres and geographic locations. Post-colonial and feminist engagement with literature begs us to engage with the racialized and gendered constraints of this character in order to understand the borders of latinidad as based on the exclusion of certain bodies, predominantly black ones. Using the domestic worker characters from Julia Alvarez’s How the García Girls Lost Their Accents (1991) and Edwidge Danticat’s The Farming of Bones (1998), and underscoring their historical and socio-political background of Hispaniola, we can understand the embodied context of …

Philological Botany: The Poetics Of Plant Classification In Early China And Japan, Loren Waller Apr 2023

Philological Botany: The Poetics Of Plant Classification In Early China And Japan, Loren Waller

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Flowering plants are a primary topic in Chinese and Japanese poetry, often used figuratively to express human emotions. Over time, as poets alluded to earlier works, these plants developed conventional metaphorical meanings. It is natural that such meanings would shift over time, but what is also striking is that historical understandings of the plants themselves, as well as the names used for the plants, also changed over time. An examination of three case studies will show how the identities of these plants changed over time as they were collected within literary texts and commentaries. Chapter 1 on the hibiscus (Ch. …

Deus Ex Machina: Contemporary Argentina's Literature Of Infrastructure, D. Bret Leraul Mar 2023

Deus Ex Machina: Contemporary Argentina's Literature Of Infrastructure, D. Bret Leraul

Faculty Journal Articles

This article traces the growth of representations of literary infrastructure in Argentinean literature parallel to the rise of global finance capital and the successive price and debt crises it has visited upon the Argentinean economy since the restoration of liberal democracy in 1983. I argue that as Argentina’s robust mid-century literary institution has declined, the concrete organizations that constitute its infrastructure—for example publishing houses, educational institutions, cultural bureaucracies—become fodder for literary fiction. In short, literature represents its own infrastructure when that infrastructure comes to present a problem. My claim rests at once on the logics of the literary institution and …

Bergson On Poetics: Philosophy, Literature And Science, Michel Dalissier Feb 2023

Bergson On Poetics: Philosophy, Literature And Science, Michel Dalissier

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In this paper, I analyze Henri Bergson’s insightful and contrasted vision of poetry. First, I show in what sense Bergson sympathizes with the idea that the poet must be credited to surpass the novelist in offering to us an unparalleled emotional apprehension of the world. Second, I nonetheless underline how Bergson grants the product of the poet, i.e., the poem itself, a problematic linguistic status, inasmuch as the focus of his analysis shifts from an intersubjective poetical apprehension of feelings to their individual poetic appreciation, or from the spiritual dimension of poetry to its material dimension. Third, I further suggest …

Language, Science And Literature, Hitoshi Oshima Feb 2023

Language, Science And Literature, Hitoshi Oshima

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The creativity of language Chomsky puts so much importance on must be questioned because the same creativity has produced lethal weapons such as atomic bombs. Modern science developed by the power of language has certainly produced many beneficial things, but we should not overlook its destructive side. Besides, language capable of inventing a new reality leads us to believe in it blindly. Let us remember philosophers such as Wittgenstein or Nagarjuna who warned us not to believe in the construct called “reality” made up by language power. Now, is it better and safer then to use a metaphorical language that composes …

Chronotropics: Caribbean Women Writing Spacetime, Odile Ferly, Tegan Zimmerman Jan 2023

Chronotropics: Caribbean Women Writing Spacetime, Odile Ferly, Tegan Zimmerman

Language, Literature, and Culture

This book deconstructs androcentric approaches to spacetime inherited from western modernity through its theoretical frame of the chronotropics. It sheds light on the literary acts of archival disruption, radical remapping, and epistemic marronnage by twenty-first-century Caribbean women writers to restore a connection to spacetime, expanding it within and beyond the region. Arguing that the chronotropics points to a vocation for social justice and collective healing, this pan-Caribbean volume returns to auhthonous ontologies and epistemologies to propose a poetics and politics of the chronotropics that is anticolonial, gender inclusive, pluralistic, and non-anthropocentric.

Reading Zora Neale Hurston's Works Through An Islamic Lens: The Absence Of Islam In Moses, Man Of The Mountain And Jonah's Gourd Vine, Asma Abdullah Saud Alqahtani Jan 2023

Reading Zora Neale Hurston's Works Through An Islamic Lens: The Absence Of Islam In Moses, Man Of The Mountain And Jonah's Gourd Vine, Asma Abdullah Saud Alqahtani

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Zora Neale Hurston is an African-American writer, anthropologist, and ethnographer of the Harlem Renaissance. She is distinguished for documenting and celebrating the religions of African Americans in the South. In this study, the author argues that Hurston represents the practiced religions in Southern African-American communities in Jonah’s Gourd Vine and Moses, Man of the Mountain while noticeably omitting Islam, despite the fact that Islam predominated in more Northern African-American Communities as a reclaimed religious history and practice. Hurston’s exclusion prompts inquiries into the history of Islamic erasures in Southern African-American communities and introduces ambiguity in interpreting the metaphors found in …
