A Defense Of The Science Fiction Literary Genre: The Interplay Between Science Fiction And American Society During The Cold War, Brittany Geier
A Defense Of The Science Fiction Literary Genre: The Interplay Between Science Fiction And American Society During The Cold War, Brittany Geier
Senior Honors Theses
Science fiction (sci-fi) has existed for centuries, if not millennia, yet many people still do not view it as a respectable literary genre. In fact, many intellectuals claim that sci-fi does not count as true literature since it supposedly promotes mere adolescent escapism. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Sci-fi is a deep, nuanced genre that allows people to more fully engage with the world around them and to wrestle with their own hopes, fears, and desires. This is evident in the content of American sci-fi novels that came out of the Cold War era (1947-1991). During this …

An Index Of Choral Music Performed During The National Conventions Of The American Choral Directors Association (1991-2019), Jonathan Randall Hall
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to index and examine the repertoire of choirs selected to perform at the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Conventions/Conferences between the years of 1991-2019. This is a replicated study of William Jones’s dissertation, An Index of Choral Music Performed during National Conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (1960-1987). The researcher accumulated and examined National Convention/Conference programs with the following objectives in mind: to investigate literature trends reflected in National Conventions/Conferences, and to provide choral conductors a guide through which they may gain an overview of literature performed on National Convention/Conference programs. The …
Daenerys Targaryen: Mad Or Madly Ended? A Feminist Analysis Of Her Downfall, Barbara Yauss
Daenerys Targaryen: Mad Or Madly Ended? A Feminist Analysis Of Her Downfall, Barbara Yauss
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The release of the final episodes of Game of Thrones was met with uproar, particularly in response to David Benioff and Weiss’s ending for the beloved Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke. Her descent into madness has sparked controversy over whether she deserved this fate, with the unexplained slaughter of Kings Landing being yet another example of the showrunners rushing through the eighth and final season. Popular belief agrees either way that Dany’s downfall is attributed to the madness that runs through Targaryen bloodlines. I argue, however, that it is patriarchal impositions that lead to her demise. Jon Snow, as …

Rahul Sankrityayan, Tsetan Phuntsog And Tibetan Textbooks For Ladakh In 1933, John Bray, Martijn Van Beek, Tsering Gonkatsang, Phuntsok Wangchuk
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
In 1933 the Indian scholar and social activist Rahul Sankrityayan (1893-1963) compiled a set of four Tibetan-language readers and a grammar for use in Ladakhi schools, together with his Ladakhi colleague Tsetan Phuntsog. The readers contain a mix of material from Western, Indian, Ladakhi and Tibetan sources. This includes simple essays about ‘air’ and ‘water’, selections from Aesop’s fables, Indian folk stories, biographies of famous people in Ladakhi and Tibetan history, poems by Ladakhi authors, and extracts from the Treasury of Elegant Sayings by Sakya Pandita Kunga Gyaltsen (1182-1251). This essay begins with a review of earlier Tibetan-language schoolbooks published …

Finding A Good Book To Live In: A Reflective Autoethnography On Childhood Sexual Abuse, Literature And The Epiphany, Karen D. Barley Ms
The Qualitative Report
The topic of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) remains a prevalent issue globally and despite the best efforts of welfare organisations, it would seem that as a society we are no closer to a resolution. CSA is a topic that is discussed in vague terms, but the real impact of CSA on the child is rarely divulged, except behind closed doors. This autoethnographic study traces the life and experiences of CSA of the author and how she used literature and writing as a coping mechanism. Using this powerful methodological tool, the author has been able to expose the implications of the …

The main objective of this study is to investigate and analyze global research productivity in knowledge management (KM) research published from 1960 to 2017 and indexed in Scopus database. It is the first scientometric study investigating and analyzing 56 years of KM literature indexed in Scopus. KM research productivity has grown from a single digit in 1960 to four digits in 2003. The results of the study indicate that, for the past 20 years (1997-2017), KM research recorded 63141 …
Transitional Portraits: Syrian Immigrants Of The North American Mahjar In 'Abd Al-Masih Haddad's Prose, Benjamin Smith
Transitional Portraits: Syrian Immigrants Of The North American Mahjar In 'Abd Al-Masih Haddad's Prose, Benjamin Smith
Arabic Faculty Works
This article argues that the 1921 collection of diasporic short stories Hikayat al-mahjar, written by ‘Abd al-Masih Haddad, makes a unique and notable contribution to mahjar literature by mobilizing formal literary techniques and innovative thematic content to capture a Syrian immigrant community engaged in a transitional moment in America. This paper situates Haddad (best known as the founder of the biweekly Arabic newspaper al-Saʼih, and a founding member of the literary society al-Rābiṭa al-qalamiyya) among his literary peers and provides an analysis of Hikayat al-mahjar that demonstrates the work’s points of convergence and divergence from the literary norms of the …
