Putting Humpty Dumpty Together Again: What's Right With Betsy, Elaine R. Silliman, Louise C. Wilkinson, Robin L. Danzak
Putting Humpty Dumpty Together Again: What's Right With Betsy, Elaine R. Silliman, Louise C. Wilkinson, Robin L. Danzak
Communication Disorders Faculty Publications
Betsy is a telling case of the struggles and victories of a youngster who has grappled with a language learning disability for most of her 17 years. Her story is a fitting way to conclude this volume because she represents how a child with motivation and resilience can confront the educational and interpersonal obstacles she has experienced. Her story, which predates the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and the 1997 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, is a metaphor for the ongoing debates in theory and practice about the meanings of a learning disability versus a …
William Faulkner And The Oral Text, Gregory Alan Borse
William Faulkner And The Oral Text, Gregory Alan Borse
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The disjunction between the oral and the literate in the works of William Faulkner reveals the different ways these distinct modes of organization combine to structure a text. The oral in Faulkner's fiction makes its presence known not only as offset speech but also as a mode of action and narrative whose logic is conjunctive rather than disjunctive. According to the literate mode, a form organizes novelistic matter. According to the oral mode, forces that function as signs rather than organizers of their form rule the action and narrative. When the disjunction between the oral and the literate is so …
Impact Of Globalisation On Information Seeking: The Role Of Cultural Lenses And Indigenous Knowledge, Ardis Hanson
Impact Of Globalisation On Information Seeking: The Role Of Cultural Lenses And Indigenous Knowledge, Ardis Hanson
Dean's Office Publications
How can understanding cultural lenses help us rethink constructs that have been taken for granted and assist in identifying new problems of significance in the delivery of information and the establishment of discrete, culturally based cyber-communities? With the increased access of global information, a critical question is how does an individual (or political entity) acquire information that is bias-free as possible that can be reviewed and interpreted in the appropriate context (indigenous knowledge). This paper attempts to provide a discussion of cultural lenses and indigenous knowledge in the development of information seeking behaviours and the design of information systems.
Literacy As A Performing Art: A Phenomenological Study Of Oral Dramatic Reading, Neva Virginia Cramer
Literacy As A Performing Art: A Phenomenological Study Of Oral Dramatic Reading, Neva Virginia Cramer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Based on semiotic, aesthetic response, reader response, and drama in education theories, this phenomenological study seeks to describe the literary experience of text through oral interpretation for middle to high SES, fourth and eighth grade students as compared to Low SES fourth and eighth grade students. Using the research methodology of Moustakas (1994) and data analysis of Teddlie (2000), this study proposes to describe and understand the relation of literary understanding and oral dramatic expression implicit in the descriptive paralinguistic and chronemic patternizations of the oral rendition of text and describe the act of reading as phenomenology. Descriptions of the …

Genre Studies: Temporary Homogeneous Grouping To Improve Reading Or Merely Another Form Of Tracking?, Brenda Wright Campbell Edd
Dissertations
For the last fifty years, raising the achievement levels of students thought to be “at-risk” has proven to be one of the most difficult and vexing problems facing educators. Although many different strategies have been tried with varying levels of success, no single at-risk solution has emerged that both promotes significant achievement gains and helps to narrow the achievement gap between people of color and whites. This study examined the effectiveness of a particular district-wide literacy strategy in its first year that focused on literacy to educate students identified as “at-risk”. Specifically, this study used data gathered from two measures …

It is necessary to understand causes that may contribute to the difficulties that American Indians have with effective acquisition of literacy skills. This presentation for educators of American Indian students will present information that will increase educators' knowledge of American Indian culture, and the culture of the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation. In addition, the effect culture has on an individual, the classroom, and reading instruction will be …
Language Planning To Construct Power, Inequality, And Hegemony, Arturo Ruelas
Language Planning To Construct Power, Inequality, And Hegemony, Arturo Ruelas
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Because of the historical and current state and national language situation, or 'dilemma' as some would have it, California has issued several language policies, such as the English Language Development (ELD) Standards and official U.S. English. The primary purpose of language policy/planning is to make "explicit the mechanisms by which planning processes interact with other historical-structural forces that form language communities and determine patterns of language structure and use" (Planning language, planning inequality Tollefson 36). Still, language policies and ideologies are "articles of faith" subject to empirical verification, where there are profound related effects to the object of their inquiry …

Closing The Gap Between Research And Practice: Foundations For The Acquisition Of Literacy, Molly De Lemos
Closing The Gap Between Research And Practice: Foundations For The Acquisition Of Literacy, Molly De Lemos
Literacy and numeracy
Over the years two main approaches have emerged in the teaching and learning of reading and writing. One is the 'whole language' approach; the other concentrates more on instruction in phonics. This paper focuses on the theoretical assumptions underlying these two approaches to the teaching of literacy, and the studies which have been undertaken, in the international arena, to find out how children progress, from their earliest educational years, in attaining both initial reading skills and lifelong literacy.

The Representation Of Aboriginal English In School Literacy Materials, Ian G. Malcolm, Ellen Grote, Louella Eggington, Farzad Sharifian
Research outputs pre 2011
Australian education systems have, as a whole, had limited success in attempting to impart literacy in standard English to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. One measure of the magnitude of the problem is shown in the national figures relating student achievement at various levels to agreed benchmarks. It has been shown that the Year 3 benchmarks have been achieved by fewer than two thirds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, whereas they have been achieved by nearly 90% of the national school population overall (Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs, 1999). With respect to reading, …

Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study investigates the ways in which four Year One children engage in the literacy events of their regular and Reading Recovery classrooms. It explores how these children perceived their beginning reading instruction and possible relationships between the children's perceptions and the ways in which they ‘did' literacy in each setting. The study draws on research in beginning reading instruction from both a psychological and socio-cultural perspective, as well as research into withdrawal programs for children experiencing difficulty in learning to read and the Reading Recovery program itself. A case study approach was used in this study and data collection …
Literacy, Womanism And Struggle: Reflections On The Practices Of An African Woman, Nombuso Dlamini
Literacy, Womanism And Struggle: Reflections On The Practices Of An African Woman, Nombuso Dlamini
Journal of International Women's Studies
From the Essay:
As I begin writing about the importance of, and interconnections among literacy, womanism and struggle, I feel myself drawn enthusiastically to treasured memories of my mother’s life and the influence she has had in shaping my theoretical and professional undertakings. Going back into my childhood, I can surely categorize my mother then as having been a literacy worker as she taught at an elementary school, a womanist because of her concern for and actions about issues of women equity, and a political activist because of her struggles against apartheid. My interest here is in tracing a …

Literacy And The Deaf Individual : What Are We Going To Do About It?, Tonya Seger
Honors Capstones
Do you find it acceptable for students to graduate high school with a third grade literacy level? Of course not! Unfortunately, the average deaf and hard of hearing student graduates with little more than the literacy skills of a nine-year old. Although this fact is well known, not much is happening to change it. This paper covers the following topics: history of deaf education, definition of literacy, why literacy is important, Deaf Culture", literacy in the workplace, why literacy levels are so low, and what we can do about it? Research indicates that literacy levels of deaf and hard of …

A Cross-Case Study Of Teacher Perceptions Of Program Design And Teaching Efficacy: The Seaview Reading Support Program, Susan L. Bowers Smith Edd
Dissertations
Teachers at Seaview Elementary School developed an innovative reading support program delivered by classroom teachers to increase the achievement of children who struggled to read literature in the district's core curriculum. Although studies of the program's impact on student achievement indicated that many of the children who received services in the classroom were able to fluently read grade level materials and improve their scores on standardized tests, issues created by the additional burden of this instruction on some teachers prevented the integration of the program into other grade levels and schools in the Seaview School District and Seaview Elementary School. …
