“A Show About Language”: A Linguistic Investigation Of The Creation Of Humor In Seinfeld, Lindsey N. King
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study investigates the creation of humor in the dialog of the television sit-com Seinfeld to gain a deeper understanding of humor techniques in a long format. By analyzing six episodes of the series, it is seen that the Incongruity Theory of Humor, violations of Grice’s maxims of the Cooperative Principle, and perspective clashes (such as miscommunications) are essential to the humor throughout each episode.

Aspect Extraction From Product Reviews Using Category Hierarchy Information, Yifeng Yang, Chen Cen, Minghui Qiu, Forrest Sheng Bao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Aspect extraction is a task to abstract the common properties of objects from corpora discussing them, such as reviews of products. Recent work on aspect extraction is leveraging the hierarchical relationship between products and their categories. However, such effort focuses on the aspects of child categories but ignores those from parent categories. Hence, we propose an LDA-based generative topic model inducing the two-layer categorical information (CAT-LDA), to balance the aspects of both a parent category and its child categories. Our hypothesis is that child categories inherit aspects from parent categories, controlled by the hierarchy between them. Experimental results on 5 …

It's All Low-Hanging Fruit On Steroids: Many More Mixed And Mashed Metaphors, Don Hauptman
Word Ways
A Mixed metaphor is a phrase in which two or more figures of speech are contradictory, ludicrous, or impossible when visualized as if they were literal. In some cases, the tropes don't meet this definition but still clash awkwardly or create a string of eye-rolling clichés. I've dubbed this latter phenomenon a mashed metaphor.
