"Pay No Attention To The Can Behind The Merton" A Gallimaufry Of New Spoonerisms, Don Hauptman
Word Ways
It isn't often that spoonerisms are in the news. But this past May, one made headlines nationally. A New Brunswick, New Jersey, bar owner won a prolonged legal battle over the right to call his establishment Buck Foston. The city, objecting to the name (which refers to the rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox) denied him a liquor license. A jury decided that his First Amendment rights had been violated and awarded him $1.5 million.
All this trouble for a nonsensical spoonerism! We can do better.

Of Gangs And Gaggles: Can A Corporation Be Part Of An Association-In-Fact Rico Enterprise? Linguistic, Historical, And Rhetorical Perspectives, Randy D. Gordon
Faculty Scholarship
Over 30 years ago, courts of appeals began to hold that the RICO statute’s definition of association-in-fact enterprise is broad enough to include corporations as constituent members, even though that definition states that such an association is limited to a “group of individuals.” This Article demonstrates why these cases were wrongly decided from a variety of perspectives: linguistic, systemic and consequentialist. It also suggests a strategy for correcting this widespread interpretive error and provides evidence that the Supreme Court may be disposed to agree that the lower courts have uniformly erred.

Statistical Literacy Among Applied Linguists And Second Language Acquisition Researchers, Shawn Loewen, Elizabeth Lavolette, Le Anne Spino, Mostafa Papi, Jens Schmidtke, Scott Sterling, Dominik Wolff
Language Resource Center
The importance of statistical knowledge in applied linguistics and second language acquisition (SLA) research has been emphasized in recent publications. However, the last investigation of the statistical literacy of applied linguists occurred more than 25 years ago (Lazaraton, Riggenbach, & Ediger, 1987). The current study undertook a partial replication of this older work by investigating (a) applied linguists’ general experiences with statistics, (b) underlying factors that constitute applied linguists’ knowledge about and attitudes toward statistics, and (c) variables that predict attitudes toward statistics and statistical self-efficacy. Three hundred thirty-one scholars of applied linguistics and SLA completed a questionnaire. Eighty percent …

Swinburne's "Nephelidia", Jim Puder
Word Ways
Conventional literary wisdom has it that Swinburne's "Nephelidia" ("Cloudlets") must have been intended as a parody of its author's own poetic style. Perhaps so - it does, certainly, share a characteristic style of construction with much of his other verse.
