Big Issues Resulting In Bold Decisions: How Boards Of High-Performing Professional Societies Engage, Mark T. Engle Jan 2008

Big Issues Resulting In Bold Decisions: How Boards Of High-Performing Professional Societies Engage, Mark T. Engle

Student Scholarship

According to Taylor, Chait, and Holland (1996) and Carver (1997), boards of nonprofit organizations spend too much of their limited available time pursuing trivial decisions. This paper examines how boards of high-performing professional societies tackle big issues. Using a decision theoretic approach, the paper conceptualizes bold decision making as involving a particular decision space (Papadakis, Lioukas, & Chambers, 1998), a set of decision steps (DeSanctis & Gallupe, 1987; Nutt, 1984), and group processes associated with bounded rationality (Boland & Pondy, 1986; Simon, 1991). This framework is measured against findings from fieldwork, resulting in a revised conceptual model and general support …

Leadership Efficacy: Review And Future Directions, Sean T. Hannah, Bruce Avolio, Fred Luthans, Peter D. Harms Jan 2008

Leadership Efficacy: Review And Future Directions, Sean T. Hannah, Bruce Avolio, Fred Luthans, Peter D. Harms

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The concept of leader efficacy has received relatively little attention in the leadership literature. This is somewhat surprising given that effective leadership requires high levels of agency (i.e., deliberately or intentionally exerting positive influence) and confidence. This review uses existing theory and research on leader efficacy as a point of departure for proposing an expanded and multi-level framework for understanding the domain of leadership efficacy that includes eader, follower, and collective efficacies. The primary goals are to provide a conceptual framework to stimulate future theory and research on building efficacious leadership and to understand how such leadership develops and …

Designing And Implementing A Competency-Based Curriculum: Leadership Implications, Ralitsa Akins, Oscar Ingaramo, Maia Eppler, Gilbert Handal Jan 2008

Designing And Implementing A Competency-Based Curriculum: Leadership Implications, Ralitsa Akins, Oscar Ingaramo, Maia Eppler, Gilbert Handal

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Choices in leadership decision-making reflect forces stemming from the leader, the environment and the group, where the quality of the decision and its acceptance are at stake (Yukl 1981). In academic institutions, establishing a supportive learning environment is not sufficient for achieving desired changes; implementing and sustaining the leader’s vision becomes absolutely necessary (Stinson, Pearson, and Lucas 2006).

Leadership Experiences Of Male African-American Secondary Urban Principals: The Impact Of Beliefs, Values And Experiences On School Leadership Practices, Gregory D. Henderson

ETD Archive

Uneasiness about leading ethnically diverse urban schools implies that principals of color may have an important role in accomplishing their schools' goals. Findings from this study revealed that in areas of image administration and relationship development African-American principals and European American principals in urban schools perceive their principals' leadership in a different way. Results revealed that (a) African-American male principals were critical in creating an inclusive school among groups of ethnically diverse groups of students (b) due to their racial affiliation, African-American principals played an important role in mentoring and providing an atmosphere of love and support and (c) African-American …

Examining Career-Related Mentoring And Managerial Performance Across Cultures: A Multilevel Analysis, William A. Gentry, Todd J. Weber, Golnaz Sadri

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

The benefits of the mentoring relationship for protégés have been a primary focus in the mentoring literature. Researchers have recently begun to examine how mentoring can benefit the mentor. The purpose of the present study is to examine whether direct report-ratings of a manager’s career-related mentoring behaviors are related to boss-ratings of that manager’s performance. In addition, this study assesses whether the cultural background of the manager moderates the career-related mentoring–performance relationship via multilevel methodology. Results reveal that managers who are rated by their direct reports as engaging in career-related mentoring behaviors are perceived as better performers by their bosses. …

Development Of Future Leaders: A Case Study On The Bank Of Thailand (Bot), Adisak Chandprapalert, Suda Suwannapirom

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In the chaotic, volatile and complex business environment at the present time, an organization must be able to learn from and adapt to changes in order to enhance competitive advantage. As a result, leaders who make strategic decisions must adopt a new mind-set as new realities emerge and encourage strategic flexibility across and within their organizations (Hitt, Ireland, & Hoskisson, 2005). There are two significant factors to be strategically flexible on a continuing basis including leaders must develop an organization vision with a corresponding strategic plan and have the ability to manage changes (Zaccaro & Banks, 2004). Vision and leadership …

Leaders And Leadership Roles In Relation To Effective Management Of The Human Resources, John Inyang Jan 2008

Leaders And Leadership Roles In Relation To Effective Management Of The Human Resources, John Inyang

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The term leader is defined as a person initiating interaction with other members of a group, a person who moves the group towards group goal. The dictionary definition of a leader is ‘one who leads or goes first’. In other words one who first perceives the group’s needs far ahead of others and therefore plans and enlists the cooperation of others in its implementation. A person is a leader in any social situation in which his ideas and actions influence the thoughts and behaviours of others. The concept of a ‘leader’ therefore implies role-playing for some time. To be called …

Separated At Birth: An Inquiry On The Conceptual Independence Of The Entrepreneurship And The Leadership Constructs, Richard C. Becherer, Mark Mendenhall, Karen Ford Eickhoff

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship and leadership may flow from the same genealogical source and the appearance of separation of the two constructs may be due to differences in the contexts through which the root phenomenon flows. Entrepreneurship and leadership are figuratively different manifestations of the need to create. To better understand the origin of entrepreneurship and leadership, research must first focus on the combinations or hierarchy of traits that are necessary, but perhaps not sufficient, to stimulate the two constructs. Factors that trigger a drive to create or take initiative within the individual in the context of a particular circumstance should be identified, …

Leadership Skills Development In Theological Seminary: Crucial Factors In Creating Effective Local Church Leadership, Nghia Van Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations

Leadership is a challenge for almost every organization. Like everyone else, the church is faced with similar challenges. Being leaders of the local congregation, pastors are the key element in church leadership. Church members are demanding more of their pastors than ever. Many pastors feel ill-prepared for these tasks. The theological seminary has been the primary place to prepare church leaders to do ministry. Previous researchers have stated that there is compelling evidence that many theological seminaries were not appropriately preparing men and women for the job the local congregation expects them to do for the church. The purpose of …

Communicative Feedback And Its Influence On Leadership In A Rural School Setting, Debora Zamorano Jan 2008

Communicative Feedback And Its Influence On Leadership In A Rural School Setting, Debora Zamorano

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Bulach, Boothe, and Pickett (1998), identified that most of the shortcomings educational administrators make fall into the category of poor human relations, and one of the categories of mistakes identified by the researchers is poor-interpersonal communication skills. Bulack and colleagues found that ineffective principals had interpersonal communication problems in the areas of providing and receiving feedback. Cannon and Witherspoon (2005) point out that providing feedback involves describing observed behaviors, as well as the reactions created.

Reeves (2004) also suggests that poor communication and ineffective feedback is relatively constant within the realm of educational leadership. Reeves notes that in terms of …

This study examined schools with annual achievement gains above and below the state’s average gain in student performance and sought to determine if there were significant differences in school antecedent/context variables, leadership practices, and mediating variables between these schools.

Method

Research participants represented a sample of Connecticut elementary schools with …

Inner Voice Of Women's Self-Leadership, Diana M. Cooley

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

My research explores an aspect of leadership that is personal, which is the inner voice of self-leadership. The inner voice affects all aspects of leadership. The inner voice is highly personal in that one’s private thoughts are unique. The inner voice can increase one’s self-awareness and influence one to move forward and change or to pull one back to stand still. My thesis is that we can more fully understand how women leaders lead themselves and subsequently lead in society if we advance our understanding of their stories and experiences regarding the inner voice. This research improves our understanding of …

Mentoring Women Of Color For Leadership: Do Barriers Exist?, Sandra Yvonne Jeffcoat

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The number of women in the workforce is increasing, but they continue to hold few corporate leadership positions. Women are running into the glass ceiling, a ceiling that is thicker for Women of Color. The under-representation of women and minorities in leadership positions and the recognition of the business value of Diversity in this global economy have driven organizations to launch diversity programs and use mentoring as support for aspiring women leaders. Ragins and Cotton's 1991 research found that there were barriers for women who were looking to use mentoring as a tool for leadership development, but her participants were …

Poetic Leadership, A Territory Of Aesthetic Consciousness And Change, R. Amrit Kasten-Daryanani

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Poetic leadership is a new theoretical construct that views leadership as an activity that unites a lyrical intellect with keenly felt emotion for the purpose of producing changes in the consciousness of self and others. This change begins within the interiority of self, moving surely to broader realms of one's surroundings and society, provoking movement that impacts the developing potential of the individual and the cultural milieu in which they exist. Emotion is the primary trace into consciousness used in this dissertation, which serves to unite experiences of the heart with experiences of the mind. The unification of these disparate …

Women And Their Relationship To Leader, Follower Commitment, And Job Performance: Netherlands, Belgium, And North Carolina, Anita Maria Cassard, Joseph Charles Hamel

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Transformational leadership has become a major initiative in organizational change, yet research on the impact of the similarity of leadership styles between leaders, and women who directly report to them, specifically in international settings, is lacking. Presenting the findings of two studies showed that (a) leaders, and women directly reporting to them sharing similar leadership styles, is a strong predictor of organizational commitment and improved job performance, and (b) emerging themes revealed that external pressures on women to conform to unwritten codes when in position of power are strong. Using quantitative data analysis for the Netherlands and Belgium study, and …

Superintendents look to current literature to assist with the development of positive conflict resolution skills. These skills are not only preferable for current superintendents, but necessary for positive career development of future superintendents. Several authors have examined the various …
