I Can Do That: The Impact Of Implicit Theories On Leadership Role Model Effectiveness, Crystal L. Hoyt, Jeni L. Burnette, Audrey N. Innella

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

This research investigates the role of implicit theories in influencing the effectiveness of successful role models in the leadership domain. Across two studies, we test the prediction that incremental theorists (‘leaders are made’) compared to entity theorists (‘leaders are born’) will respond more positively to being presented with a role model before undertaking a leadership task. In Study 1, measuring people’s naturally occurring implicit theories of leadership, we showed that after being primed with a role model, incremental theorists reported greater leadership confidence and less anxious-depressed affect than entity theorists following the leadership task. In Study 2, we demonstrated the …

Revisiting The Association Of Lmx Quality With Percieved Role Stressors: Evidence For Inverted-U Relationships Among Immigrant Europeans, Guowei Jian Jan 2012

Revisiting The Association Of Lmx Quality With Percieved Role Stressors: Evidence For Inverted-U Relationships Among Immigrant Europeans, Guowei Jian

Communication Faculty Publications

Although earlier research on leader-member exchange (LMX) theory supported a negative linear relationship between LMX quality and role stressors, recent studies suggest that a more complex, nonlinear relationship may exist between LMX quality and variables traditionally associated with it. Based on communication research of LMX and social exchange theory, the aim of this article is to revisit the relationship between LMX quality and role stressors by reconceptualizing their associations and testing the hypotheses of an inverted U relationship. A survey study among immigrant employees revealed differential effects of LMX quality on role stressors. In particular, with role conflict and role …

From Radical To Mainstream? How Followercentric Approaches Inform Leadership, Michelle C. Bligh, Jeffrey C. Kohles

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

While the prevalent approach in leadership studies has focused on the leader figure, a growing number of studies challenge the implicit assumption that leaders are always singularly most central and critical to the leadership process. In this article, we review the development of follower-centered approaches that challenge the study of leadership without a concomitant emphasis on the importance of followership. From its roots as a critical challenge to the “mainstream” leadership tradition, the study of followership has helped to sharpen the focus of both leader and follower roles. Follower-centered approaches deepen almost any leader-centric analysis, for when the view is …

Lessons In Leadership: Ulysses S. Grant, Sheila Cappel Jan 2012

Lessons In Leadership: Ulysses S. Grant, Sheila Cappel

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

Leadership is not a definitive topic, in that great leadership is based on subjective determinants. What makes great leadership is a source of both fascination and extensive study. Are great leaders born, and destined to excel in circumstances they create for themselves; or do dramatic events create the need for great leaders? What can the life and Civil War experiences of Union General Ulysses S. Grant teach us about the answer to these questions? This paper provides a chronology of his life up to the onset of the Civil War, his military career during the war, and concludes with his …

Toward Understanding The Nature Of Leadership In Alleviating State Fragility, Ajay Tejasvi Narasimhan Jan 2012

Toward Understanding The Nature Of Leadership In Alleviating State Fragility, Ajay Tejasvi Narasimhan

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Approximately sixty countries have been designated `Fragile States' by international development agencies. Home to two billion of the world's poorest people, these fragile states are characterized by violence, weak institutions and shattered economies. Not only do they pose a challenge to regional security, they often become the breeding grounds for terrorism.

Donor agencies pour billions of dollars annually into these countries - through policy advice and conditional loans - to alleviate fragility and promote development. Development, however it is defined, involves economic, social and political transformation. Such a transformation is shaped by ideas, engages multiple interests, and proceeds within rules …

Stuck In The Middle: A Case Study Of Conflict Experiences By A First-Time Community College President, Martha Parker-Magagna Jan 2012

Stuck In The Middle: A Case Study Of Conflict Experiences By A First-Time Community College President, Martha Parker-Magagna

Doctoral Dissertations

Leadership models for community college presidents are in a major transformation from traditional hierarchical, positional authority to participatory models of decision making. As leadership becomes more participatory, and educators experiment with more team and collaborative approaches to leadership, increased conflict is a likely outcome. Inclusiveness often brings diverse voices into decision making, and empowerment of a variety of individuals brings a shift in traditional power dynamics. Different interests may create conflict, and leaders will need to find ways to negotiate these differences in order to enhance creative adaptation of a community college to its changing environment.

This study explores the …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Creativity is an important element in the development of educational organizations. Although many variables influence student’s creativity in universities, there is a reason to suspect that particularly the leadership behaviors’ of lecturers have powerful influences. In this study, we examined leadership behaviors contributing to enhancement of the student’s creativity. Findings of this study indicated that the leadership behaviors of lectures (e.g., idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation, technical skills, and involvement) can influence student’s creativity, both directly and indirectly. The leadership behaviors of lectures may nurture or stifle the student’s creative potential. The implications of these findings for theory and …

The Impact Of Minority And Women Leaders On Health Care Employee Satisfaction, Kinneil Coltman Jan 2012

The Impact Of Minority And Women Leaders On Health Care Employee Satisfaction, Kinneil Coltman

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

A preponderance of research suggests that the presence of minorities on the front lines of health care can improve access, satisfaction, and quality of care for minority patients, in addition to mitigating health care disparities. Yet, there is little evidence of the utility of diversity efforts focused on the upper echelons of health care. By examining employee satisfaction scores from 58 hospitals across the United States, this study explored the relationship between the presence of women and minority managers and executives and two key indicators-representation of minority employees and employee satisfaction. Quantitative analyses showed that gender and racial diversity in …

A Correlation Study Of Emotional Intelligence And Behavioral Style Of Bio-Pharmaceutical Industry District Sales Managers, Greg Megowan

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored to what extent, if at all, there was a relationship between District Sales Managers' (DMs) emotional intelligence (EQ) and their behavioral style, at Phyogen, Inc. Research demonstrated that leaders with higher levels of emotional intelligence are rated as more effective leaders (Kerr, Garvin, Heaton, & Boyle, 2005; Rosete & Ciarrochi, 2005). The literature also shows that EQ can in fact be learned and developed (Bradberry & Greaves, 2003; Cooper, 1997; Dulewicz & Higgs, 2000; Dulewicz & Higgs, 2004; Goleman, 1998; Groves, McEnrue, & Shen, 2006). In addition, emotional intelligence has been found to have a direct association …
