Self-Other Differences And Perceived Effectiveness: A Look Across Culture Dimensions, Nathalie Castano

Wayne State University Dissertations

The use of 360-degree feedback is prominent across the world. Several studies have in-vestigated the impact of culture on different aspects of 360-degree feedback, such as self-other agreement, but very few have studied how ratings on these instruments predict perceptions of leadership effectiveness, and whether this relationship is the same across different societies. The present study seeks to narrow the gap between cross-cultural research and 360-degree feedback, by (a) investigating the role that culture plays on the self-other agreement and effectiveness relationship from a culture dimension perspective and (b) comparing how different cultural aspects help explain this relationship. As barriers …

Three different groups consisting of managers, non-managers, and media and public relations professionals were surveyed …

Empathy During Times Of Crisis And Corporate Reputation, Ann T. Gallagher

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

The qualitative study used focus groups with working professionals and personal interviews with communication experts. The research is grounded in Coombs’ (1998) Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT), and Benoit’s (1977) image restoration theory, which is used …

When change is necessary in any form of organization, the level of communication for each member plays a vital role, especially in a small company. Based on literature and theory, intrapersonal development and influence relies on the structure of one's cultural language. An Intelligent Critique Of Multiple Intelligences: A Christian Review For Leaders, David A. Mcgee, Bryce Hantla

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ideas have consequences—for good or bad. The apostle Paul, in his letter to a group of Romans, stated that the metaphysical world could be known to humanity (Rom 1:18ff). Over 1,800 years later, Emanuel Kant, a German philosopher, challenged this view of the metaphysical world; that is, Kant claimed that God could not be known, and western Christian philosophy has scrambled ever since to make sense of the two.1 On a similar scale, Howard Gardner, professor at Harvard University, challenged the prevailing view of intelligence in 1983 with his book Frames of Mind, stating that there were a number of …

Organizational conflict manifests in misalignment of individuals and groups, and is often discussed in terms of the effect that leadership and management have on the state of affairs. It is built-in for any organization, yet its root causes are not fully understood. It is not uncommon to characterize leadership/management conflicts in terms of the style or personality type of the individuals involved; however, conflicting leadership and management objectives that are not style or personality dependent may also be a significant factor. Called To Lead: An Examination Into The Phenomenon Of Calling, Hughie Jackson Barnes Jan 2013

Called To Lead: An Examination Into The Phenomenon Of Calling, Hughie Jackson Barnes

Theses and Dissertations

Perhaps the most widely known episode of a calling is the burning bush experience of Moses, leader of Israel's sojourn to freedom from Egyptian captivity. At present, the phenomenon of being called to a place, vocation, or career has limited social science research. Indeed, prior to the middle of the 21st century this concept was lacking both theoretically and empirically. Any coverage of the subject of a calling was primarily found in religious periodicals and similar publications (Newman, 2006). In 2007, Scott attempted to advance the discourse on career development by examining callings and the corollary meanings which college students …

African American Female Leaders: Resilience And Success, Shanetta Weatherspoon-Robinson Jan 2013

Of the small number of African American women employed in the workforce, 30% hold professional or management positions and women in general are more educated, qualified and transformational than their male counterparts. Despite this, African American female leaders experience organizational barriers, social labeling, and biases driven by their intersectionality that hinders their career opportunities. Black feminist research suggests that social norms place women in subordinate roles in comparison to men in society. African American women face such social barriers …

Emotional Intelligence Implications On The Career Advancement Of Women In A Fortune 500 Pharmaceutical Company, Shawn D. Andrews Jan 2013

Emotional Intelligence Implications On The Career Advancement Of Women In A Fortune 500 Pharmaceutical Company, Shawn D. Andrews

Theses and Dissertations

Women account for more than 50% of college graduates, more than 50% of professional degrees such as M.D. and J.D., and more than 50.0% of management, professional, and related occupations (Labor, 2011). However, women hold only 14.3% of executive officer positions of the Fortune 500 companies, and the number of female CEOs at these companies is 3.8% (Catalyst, 2012). Given these statistics, a natural shift to a more gender-balanced senior management should be a reasonable, expected outcome. In addition, research in the past decade lead by Daniel Goleman (1995, 2000, 2004) has identified an individual's emotional intelligence as a key …
