Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This report outlines the organization and thematic focus of the Association for Communication Administration’s fourteenth annual seminar and related programs held in November 1986 in Chicago. The seminar, structured around the theme of management and leadership, featured prominent scholars who examined evolving perspectives on organizational and educational leadership in communication contexts. Complementing the seminar, six distinct programs addressed critical administrative and pedagogical concerns, including training for new administrators, the dynamics of dual-career communication professionals, the impact of grade inflation, tenure considerations for nontraditional faculty, future management concepts, and the socialization of academic chairpersons. Effectiveness Of Computer-Based, Modified Computer-Based And Workshop Training In The Learning/Application Of Leadership Skills, Karen E. Chappell

Master's Theses

This study examined the effectiveness of training methods in effective leadership principles. Forty-two male and female Introductory Psychology students were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: computer-based training (CBT), computer-based training with videotaped vignettes (CBTV), or group-based workshop training with videotaped vignettes (GBW). Training effectiveness was assessed on two dependent variables, pretest/posttest scores in conceptual knowledge and pretest/posttest scores in applied knowledge. Only partial support was found for the hypothesis that there would be significant differences in mean pretest and mean posttest scores on both conceptual and applied knowledge as a result of training method. Method of training was …

Development, Teaching And Evaluation Of A Course In Church Leadership And Administration For The Theological Seminary, Marienhoehe, Germany, Johann H. Gerhardt

Doctor of Ministry Projects

One of the most important concerns of the clergy and the laymen of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Germany is the future of the local congregations. There may be many reasons for the dwindling of a church's attractiveness and relevance in a given situation. One is how the local church lives its organizational life. Adequate church leadership and administration proves to be an important instrument for a healthy development of a congregation. That is why prospective ministers need special training in this field.

It was the purpose of the present study to develop adequate administrational strategies and to apply them …

The Assessment Of Peer Social Acceptance And Social Behavior Of Type A Children, Constance Lynne Cappas

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted in order to extend the generalizability of a previous study CCappas et al., 1985) that examined the social acceptance of Type A children. One hundred and ninety-six 1 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade children from two public schools were classified as Type A or Type B based on teacher ratings on the Matthews Youth Test for Health (Matthews & Angulo, 1980). Results indicated that, similar to the prior study, Type A children were …

Administrative Style And The Small College Context, Joseph W. Macdoniels Oct 1985

Administrative Style And The Small College Context, Joseph W. Macdoniels

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay examines the distinctive administrative challenges faced by leaders of small college communication programs and argues that prevailing managerial models are poorly suited to the values and structures of these institutions. It begins by distinguishing administration, management, and leadership, noting that contemporary higher education privileges managerial thinking oriented toward efficiency, control, and product driven outcomes. The discussion contends that this framework conflicts with the interpersonal, process oriented commitments of communication faculty and with the collegial traditions of small liberal arts colleges. The essay outlines the limitations of the management oriented model at the departmental level, where chairs are expected …

Self-Presentational Determinants Of Sex Differences In Leadership Behavior, Donelson R. Forsyth, Barry R. Schlenker, Mark R. Leary, Nancy E. Mccown May 1985

Self-Presentational Determinants Of Sex Differences In Leadership Behavior, Donelson R. Forsyth, Barry R. Schlenker, Mark R. Leary, Nancy E. Mccown

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Men and women placed in leadership positions communicated information about their skills and abilities to their subordinates. Although leaders’ perceptions of their abilities, group members’ knowledge of their leader’s abilities, and the specific skills needed by the leader were all manipulated in the experimental setting, self-presentations of ability were primarily determined by sex role stereotypes rather than by situational factors. Results indicated that (1) male leaders emphasized their social influence and task abilities; (2) female leaders emphasized their interpersonal, socioemotional abilities; and (3) group members felt task ability, as compared to interpersonal ability, was a far more important skill for …

Subordinate Locus Of Control, Leadership Styles And Job Satisfaction, Stephanie A. Smith Jan 1985

Subordinate Locus Of Control, Leadership Styles And Job Satisfaction, Stephanie A. Smith

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between management style and the personality variable "locus of control" on subordinate job satisfaction among employees of a Communications Center for a large municipal law enforcement agency. Unlike many of the past studies that investigated the relationship between employee internality and job satisfaction, this current study found that Internals and Externals did not differ in general satisfaction when both had perceptions of high considerate supervisory behavior. It was also hypothesized that locus of control would have a high negative correlation with general satisfaction. This hypothesis was not supported. The last hypothesis of this study involved …

Effective Group Meetings And Decision Making, Donelson R. Forsyth Jan 1985

Effective Group Meetings And Decision Making, Donelson R. Forsyth

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

An extraordinary amount of work and many types of decisions are handled by groups of people, for in group meetings we can pool our knowledge and abilities, give each other feedback about our ideas, and tackle problems that would overcome us if we faced them alone. Group members not only give us emotional and social support when meeting together, but they can stimulate us to become more creative, more insightful, and more committed to our goals.

Not every group, however, realizes all these positive consequences. Often we dread going to "committee meetings," "council sessions," and "discussion groups" because they take …

On the 350th anniversary of the founding of the Company of the Daughters of Charity, the American Daughters held Vincentian heritage workshops, reflecting on Louise de Marillac’s contributions to the Company’s establishment and endurance. Margaret Flinton explains the most important ones in detail. These are Louise’s efforts to have the Daughters permanently put under the direction of the superior general of the Congregation; her placement of the Daughters under Mary’s protection; the way Louise educated and led them, preparing them spiritually and professionally; how she collaborated with Vincent de Paul; her concept of a community life that would support the …

Relationship Between Personality Types And Effective Leadership Styles, Maurice Flores

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine what were the relationships, if any, that existed between the most common personality types of selected elementary school principals, as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and the most effective leadership styles as measured by the Leader Effectiveness and Adaptability Description (LEAD), a measure of leadership effectiveness. The focus was to determine whether these two instruments possessed sufficient discriminative powers to effect a distinction between effective and ineffective administrators prior to their appointment as administrators; The findings are summarized as follows: (1) The difference between the scores that was used to …

Heg82-167 Leadership Roles Group Members Play, Duane A. Olsen Jan 1982

Heg82-167 Leadership Roles Group Members Play, Duane A. Olsen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Although personal freedom, independence, and the opportunity to "do your own thing" are highly valued, group activities dominate our lives. People willingly, even eagerly, give up freedom and independence to join groups and organizations. Calendars are filled with the activities of religious groups, business or professional organizations, recreational teams, civic clubs and others.

Effective leadership is a key element in the success of all groups and organizations. Whether the title is president, director, or chair, progress is measured by the success of the group or organization.

The American Public Art Museum: Formation Of Its Prevailing Attitudes, Marilyn Mars Jan 1982

The American Public Art Museum: Formation Of Its Prevailing Attitudes, Marilyn Mars

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the art museum's growth in America is presented in this thesis to place the development of the public art museum in the proper context. The museum has absorbed its sense of worth and power from the people who shaped its policy and believed in its ability to accomplish positive feats. Its growth as a force in the art world was subtle and studied, but amazingly complete. The museum which doubts its ability to persuade, convince, educate and entertain does not long survive. Examining the people and their attitudes with whom the museums had the most contact and …
