The Pentagon’S Pivot: How Lead Users Are Transforming Defense Product Development, Adam Jay Harrison
The Pentagon’S Pivot: How Lead Users Are Transforming Defense Product Development, Adam Jay Harrison
Defense Horizons
The Pentagon is rethinking how it develops military capabilities. Traditional defense acquisition, built on long-term forecasting and rigid requirements, is struggling to keep pace with rapid technological change. Instead, the Department of Defense is beginning to adopt a new approach centered on “lead users”: operators and practitioners who encounter problems early and develop solutions in real time. This shift moves innovation closer to the field. Rather than predicting future needs, the military can adapt faster by learning from those already solving emerging challenges. Lead user-driven development also aligns more closely with commercial innovation cycles, improving speed and relevance. To remain …

This article, collaboratively written by the presidents of the National Latina/o Psychological Association (NLPA), presents leadership as conceptualized and practiced in NLPA. We first identify key leadership constructs in the available literature as well as relevant cultural values, describe liderazgo (leadership) through cultural lenses, and articulate the connections to counseling psychology and the social justice underpinnings that have guided NLPA's formation and development. We then present a number of events and decisions to illustrate how we have operationalized these organizing principles in both the daily management and long-term goals of NLPA. We conclude with a discussion of the future paths …

Interprofessional Collaboration: Nurses And Physicians Continue To View Collaboration Differently, Tanna Thomason, Belinda M. Toole
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Interprofessional collaboration fosters quality and safety clinical outcomes and is a requisite element in our complex healthcare delivery environment. Yet, as noted by The Joint Commission (2009), the relationship between nurses and physicians has been a major determinate of the quality of healthcare. Hierarchical power relationships between nurses and physicians were first described by Stein in 1967. Power dynamics, whether real or perceived, impede teamwork, collegiality, and patient advocacy. Although significant progress has been since Stein’s seminal article, conflict and discord persists leading to errors and increased healthcare costs (Crawford, Omery, & Seago, 2012; Nair, Fitzpatrick, McNulty, Click, & …

Innovative Leadership In Nursing Education For Maryland Healthcare Systems: Supporting Professional Advancement In Nursing, Tener Goodwin Veenema
Innovative Leadership In Nursing Education For Maryland Healthcare Systems: Supporting Professional Advancement In Nursing, Tener Goodwin Veenema
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: The US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), recently reported that Maryland is one of 16 U.S. states projected to experience a serious shortfall of registered nurses (RNs) by 2025 (HRSA, 2014). This problem is not unique to the US as globally, the nursing shortage is limiting access to health care services and impacting health outcomes across many countries. Innovative education and workplace partnership programs are needed to retain new nursing graduates in times of shortage and funnel them into open ‘high-need" positions at area health care systems while simultaneously providing support and encouragement for the nurse to return …

Regulating Emotions In Response To Power Distance In Meetings, Rebekka Erks, Erin Nyquist, Joseph A. Allen
Psychology Faculty Publications
Purpose – Meetings are a necessary part of work. This research focuses on how power distance in meetings affects emotional labour, including whether leader-member exchange (LMX) serves as a moderator for this relationship. It is hypothesized that power distance in meetings would lead to higher levels of emotional labour in meeting attendees, and that higher levels of LMX would make this relationship even stronger.
Design/methodology/approach - The authors used a panel sample of full-time working adults from a variety of industries who regularly attend meetings. Participants completed a survey with items related to power distance, emotional labour, and LMX. Hypotheses …

Leveraging Positive Psychological Capital (Psycap) In Crisis: A Multiphase Framework, Ivana Milosevic, A. Erin Bass, Djordje Milosevic
Organization Management Journal
Despite recent advancements in understanding of leadership in context, there is surprisingly little insight into leadership in crisis. To provide insight into how leaders navigate crisis, we utilize historical sources of Sir Winston Churchill’s leadership during World War II to analyze which resources are used by leaders during a crisis and how they leverage these resources to lead through and out of the crisis. We discover that psychological capital (PsyCap) is a core individual resource that leaders leverage in crisis. Our findings suggest that leaders leverage PsyCap in varying ways based on the phase of the crisis. That is, different …
Crisis Leadership And Decision-Making: Hospital Administration And Nurse Leaders' Concerns For Disaster Response, Tener Goodwin Veenema, Katherine Deruggiero, Sarah Lynn Losinski, Daniel Barnett
Crisis Leadership And Decision-Making: Hospital Administration And Nurse Leaders' Concerns For Disaster Response, Tener Goodwin Veenema, Katherine Deruggiero, Sarah Lynn Losinski, Daniel Barnett
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to characterize and explore the essential elements of effective hospital and nursing leadership during disasters and MCIs and to identify those events of greatest concern for response. Disaster and mass casualty incidents (MCIs) impose a huge burden on health care leaders. These events create a sudden, unanticipated demand for care referred to as ‘patient surge" that has the potential to quickly overwhelm a hospital"s capacity to function properly. The demand for health care services exceeds capacity to respond and the institution"s normally acceptable patterns of operations and logistics are disrupted. Strong crisis leadership …

Superintendent turnover has been rampant in the public school district in Guam, an unincorporated United States territory; there have been 18 superintendents since the 1981. This qualitative study aimed to identify and analyze potential factors affecting the superintendency in Guam. Social systems theory proposes a number of factors about the dynamics that define the relationship between an individual and a social system to help us understand the behavior of the individual within an organization. To triangulate the data, this study was comprised of individual interviews with Guam superintendents and content analysis of the Guam Public School Audit of 2009 and …

How Can Human-Centered Design Be Used To Implement A Teacher-Designed, Standards-Based Curriculum?, James P. Magee
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The purpose of this study was to create a framework, based on the principles of HumanCentered Design, to implement and continue the development of a Standards-Based Curriculum that was designed by the teachers using it. While going through iterations, the curriculum will remain true to the principles of Standards-Based Instruction. Much of the research supporting a Standards-Based Curriculum comes from Robert Marzano. One of the main goals of using Human-Centered Design, in addition to the continued design and implementation of a guaranteed and viable curriculum, is to increase Collective-Teacher Efficacy. Elmore and Hattie both cite extensive data suggesting that high …

Overcoming Failure: Characteristics Of Leaders Who Have Successfully Recovered From A Significant Setback, Richard Leo Hunt
Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to study the characteristics of leaders who have experienced a setback or failure and have bounced back to success. A qualitative research design employing an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) methodology was used. Semi-structured interviews with open ended questions allowed the respondents to share valuable insights into the thoughts, feelings, and perceptions of their individual experiences. The results suggest that after experiencing a setback, a process develops where feelings and thoughts are experienced immediately following the event that is followed by a period of coping and adapting, a transition to a resilient state, and behavioral …
