Beyond Corporatism And Liberalism: State And Civil Society In Cooperation In Nicaragua, Hannah Pallmeyer Jan 2009

Beyond Corporatism And Liberalism: State And Civil Society In Cooperation In Nicaragua, Hannah Pallmeyer

Hispanic Studies Honors Projects

The Nicaraguan state has historically attempted to control Nicaraguan civil society using corporatist and liberal-democratic frameworks. This has created a difficult organizing environment for civil society organizations to struggle for social change. In this thesis, I argue that civil society organizations, operating in 2008 in a corporatist or liberal framework, were less effective in achieving national social change than organizations that worked cooperatively with the state, yet maintained some autonomy. This hypothesis is developed using the case study of three water rights organizations, and is further tested using the case of corporatist-structured Citizen Power Councils, created in 2007.

The Politics Of Lynch Violence In The State Of Exception: Citizen Rights And Vigilante Justice In Bolivia And Guatemala, Cybele Kotonias Jan 2009

The Politics Of Lynch Violence In The State Of Exception: Citizen Rights And Vigilante Justice In Bolivia And Guatemala, Cybele Kotonias

Latin American Studies Honors Projects

In its Latin American context, the term lynching refers to the extrajudicial killing of an alleged criminal by a large group and is often perceived as spontaneous mob violence. Utilizing Giorgio Agamben's notion of the 'state of exception,' I argue that lynching occurs in particular spaces in which the norms of law and actual practice are decisively separated, and communities are imagined by the state as "killable bodies" rather than citizens. In response, lynching is a paradoxical and deeply political act; it serves as both a rejection of the state and a demand for inclusion in the benefits of citizenship. …

An Examination Of The Causal Mechanisms Behind Latin America's Populist Revival And Corresponding Move To The Left, Andrea Lynch Jan 2009

An Examination Of The Causal Mechanisms Behind Latin America's Populist Revival And Corresponding Move To The Left, Andrea Lynch

Theses & ETDs

In the years since the turn of the 21st century Latin America has been experiencing an unprecedented rise of leftist, populist leaders. A 2006 article by Jorge Castaneda popularized the dichotomy between the "Bolivarian" left and the moderate, "reformist" left, and subsequent studies have often attempted to explain the emergence of leftist populism in each of its two different incarnations. This study seeks to examine four popular causal factors for the rise of the new populist left and demonstrate how these causal factors are linked. The four factors chosen for the study are: 1) the history of U.S. intervention and …

Volume 2: Development Models In Muslim Contexts : Chinese, 'Islamic' And Neo-Liberal Alternatives, Robert Springborg Jan 2009

Volume 2: Development Models In Muslim Contexts : Chinese, 'Islamic' And Neo-Liberal Alternatives, Robert Springborg

Exploring Muslim Contexts

Recent discussions of the 'Chinese economic development model', the emergence of an alternative 'Muslim model' over the past quarter century and the faltering globalisation of the 'Washington Consensus' all point to the need to investigate more systematically the nature of these models and their competitive attractions.

This is especially the case in the Muslim world which both spans different economic and geographic categories and is itself the progenitor of a development model.

The 'Chinese model' has attracted the greatest attention in step with that country's phenomenal growth and therefore provides the primary focus for this book. This volume examines the …

Indigenous Rights In Latin America: The Gap Between Doctrine And Reality, Dan Ruge Jan 2009

Indigenous Rights In Latin America: The Gap Between Doctrine And Reality, Dan Ruge

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Indigenous people are prevalent across Latin America, with numbers reaching upwards of 70 percent of the general population in certain countries. Given their strong ancestral ties to the land and cultural practices, these groups have remained hidden and isolated from mainstream populations and the forces of globalization. For many groups, the limited interactions between indigenous people and the outside world have sadly been harmful to the survival of these communities. The discovery and exploitation of oil and other natural resources have led to the destruction of property, culture, and lives of indigenous groups. The uprooting and extinction in some cases …

The full and equal participation of women in political, civil, economic, social and cultural life, at the national, regional and international levels, and the eradication of all forms of discrimination on grounds of sex are priority objectives of the international community.” On September 18, 2008 The New York Times quoted Senator Cecilia López Montaño …

Child Labor In Latin America: Poverty As Cause And Effect, Michaelle Tauson Jan 2009

Child Labor In Latin America: Poverty As Cause And Effect, Michaelle Tauson

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Throughout much of the developing world, children make up an alarming portion of the workforce. These children are robbed of their childhood in order to provide economic supplementation to their families. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), 5.7 million children in Latin America participate in the regional workforce (2006). It is a common misconception that children, who do not participate in the formal workforce, are not child laborers. However, the ILO defines child labor as any work that is detrimental to a child’s well-being or interferes with a child’s education. Due to the many categories and classifications of child …

Confronting The Past: Democratic Rhetoric Or Socially Necessary?, Rachel Oster Jan 2009

Confronting The Past: Democratic Rhetoric Or Socially Necessary?, Rachel Oster

Human Rights & Human Welfare

In the current globalized international system, politics, economics, and societal issues are the concern of not only the state but of the world as a whole. It is increasingly apparent that participation in the global community requires states to implement, at minimum, conventional democracy within which individual rights are recognized and protected. Yet for much of the developing world, democratic regimes are partially contested given that many states were historically controlled by non-democratic, often militant regimes that offered security to citizens during times of economic crises.

Private Enforcement Against International Cartels In Latin America: A Us Perspective, Daniel A. Crane Jan 2009

Private Enforcement Against International Cartels In Latin America: A Us Perspective, Daniel A. Crane

Book Chapters

A recent empirical study estimates that from 1990 to the end of 2005, 283 private international cartels were discovered and that the overcharges from these cartels totaled $500 billion. Estimates of the percentage of all detected cartels range from one in six or seven to one in 10. If the one in 10 number is correct, that would mean that overcharges from international cartels in the last 15 years were $5 trillion, or about $330 billion per year. Even assuming that the detection rate is higher today due to the success of the US Justice Department's leniency program and stepped …

Bonds, Stocks Or Dollars? Do Voters Care About Capital Markets In Brazil And Mexico, Tony Petros Spanakos, Lucio Remuzat Renno Jr.

Department of Political Science and Law Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

How does vote intention in presidential elections vary according to the economic conditions of a country, especially indicators of the financial market? Does the state of the economy, both its fundamentals as well as capital market, affect variation in candidates’ percentage of vote intention in national polls? This paper tests how economic indicators influence vote intention in presidential elections in two emerging markets: Brazil and Mexico. The presidential elections of 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006 in Brazil and 2000 and 2006 in Mexico are analyzed using all poll returns for each electoral period and corresponding economic data. The paper finds …
