Women’S Leadership, Agency And Voice: Promoting Gender Justice Within Community-Based Tenure Systems In Bolivia And Zambia: Synthesis Report, Cynthia Caron, Denise Bebbington
Sustainability and Social Justice
Published by the Rights + Resources coalition.
Land tenure security has become a major focus of donors, policy-makers, and the media in the past ten years, as land and forest resources are under a series of socio-economic and environmental pressures and related demands. How women gain access to and maintain control over land and forest resources in this dynamic environment depends both on existing institutional frameworks and on efforts to promote gender justice within customary tenure systems.
This report synthesizes research findings on gender dynamics and the implications for gender justice in community-based tenure systems in Zambia’s Eastern Province and …
Soaking In Manhood: (Re)Negotiating Masculinities And Sexualities In The Spas Of Quito, Ecuador, Ronnie Anthony Shepard
Soaking In Manhood: (Re)Negotiating Masculinities And Sexualities In The Spas Of Quito, Ecuador, Ronnie Anthony Shepard
Doctoral Dissertations
In this ethnographic investigation, the narratives of several Ecuadorian males are used to address the current intersections between personal sexual identities and masculinities. The intersections considered often take place within the Ecuadorian spa, an ethnosexual frontier in which heteronormative identities are negotiated against a backdrop of homosocial camaraderie and homoerotic desire. The role of the spa in these negotiations is twofold: it offers a space for men who have sex with men (MSM) to gain culturally requisite sexual experience, and it challenges the stereotypes of MSM as hyper-sexualized by doubling as a homosocial space in which no sexual activity is …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Freedom of the press is a hallmark of liberal democracy. Denying this civil liberty emboldens a government to exert an undue degree of influence over its citizens. By comparing the media discourse in a democratic country to the media discourse in an authoritarian country, one could reasonably expect to identify unique language markers, which shed light on their divergent political climates. This study specifically sourced articles from the Venezuelan publication El Universal and the Costa Rican publication The Tico Times. The author then analyzed every article related to politics published by both newspapers in March 2014 and in March …
Is Populism Against Trade? Argentina's Trade Policy In The Context Of Latin American Populism, Natalie M. Pita
Is Populism Against Trade? Argentina's Trade Policy In The Context Of Latin American Populism, Natalie M. Pita
Senior Theses
The question at hand is if understanding trade and populism helps inform an understanding of concerns about populist governments in terms of trade. Countries in Latin America have been plagued by ISI policies, while East Asian countries saw success with export-led growth. Export expansion and import substitution are not contradictory policies; in fact, they complement each other. ISI is one stage of development policy, and export-led growth is a second stage (Amsden 172). Unfortunately, most Latin American countries never made it to the export expansion and trade openness stage of policy. The region came closest when many of its countries …

Labor Relations Reform In 21st Century Latin America, Ali Rodolfo Bustamante
Labor Relations Reform In 21st Century Latin America, Ali Rodolfo Bustamante
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation examines the political and institutional context in Latin American countries between 2000 and 2012 to explain the decline in labor relations reform after 1999. First, I synthesize the empirical literature on Latin American labor relations reform and present the governing debates in the literature. Second, I argue that a comprehensive understanding of labor relations reform requires a focus on de jure and de facto labor institutions. Third, I conduct a comparative analysis of labor relations reform in Latin America between 2000 and 2012 employing a mixed-methods approach based on panel data models to explain the factors that influence …
