Investment And The Andean Pact: From Political Response To Legal Structures To Safe Harbors, Robert Carcano

Penn State International Law Review (1982 - 2011)

The Latin American experience clearly establishes that economic development involves profound social and political change. Despite modernization efforts, economuc benefits eluded Latin American leaders. This fact led to the widespread perception that a new international legal strucure had to be forged if the region's myriad social concerns were to be addressed. Regional economic integration was a necessary first step.

Integration enabled Latin American statesmen to address insurmountable national problems on a regional level. In the Latin American context, however, economic integration efforts became intertwined with the new nationalism. Despite this beginning, the structures that eventually arose formed a relationship which …

The Transfer Of Technology To Latin America, Gabriel M. Wilner

National law has concerned itself first with the creation of rights in technological knowledge and the protection of these rights by law. The regulation of these rights as set out in contractual relationships and the regulation of direct investment, particularly the technological component thereof, were dealt with thereafter. Other matters such as the repatriation of profits (exchange control), customs controls, and various taxes have also become a part of the national regulatory scene today. …

The great importance ascribed to this problem lies in its very extent, the prevailing trends toward its worsening in almost the entire region, on its disastrous consequences for the welfare of a large proportion of the population, and on the decisive role it will …

The crowd waited anxiously, expecting the nominations for Vice President to begin momentarily. Throughout the galleries the chant began, "We want Wallace!" It swelled into an uproar and the chairman of the convention, Sam Jackson, despite all of his efforts, could not stop the chanting and the noise. Finally Jackson called for adornment. The entire stadium retorted "No!" Sam Jackson spoke up, "The ayes have it" and the days work at the convention ended despite all the booing the Chairman's action instigated. The next day, the anti-Wallace forces had manipulated enough delegates to nominate Harry S. Truman for Vice President …

The Transfer Of Technology To Latin America, Gabriel M. Wilner Jan 1981

The Transfer Of Technology To Latin America, Gabriel M. Wilner

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This paper focuses on the contractual acquisition of foreign technology through licenses and other contractual arrangements as contrasted with the technological components in the usual direct investment. Such investment is made either in the form of the wholly-owned subsidiary of the transnational corporation or as part of a joint venture. The use of technology as a major component of direct investment has been discouraged over the years, although this trend was reversed in Chile after 1977.

Modern legislation and practice in the regulation of technology transfer is characterized in the several Latin American countries possessing such a regime by administrative …

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Dropouts from church membership have increased during the 1960s among Christian denominations. Abundant literature has been circulating analyzing possible causes and suggesting remedies. The. picture is not yet clear. Meanwhile, several types of solutions have been proposed and tried with different degrees of success or failure. As the issue is also a concern among Seventh-day Adventists, a program considering the particular situation of this denomination, in a Latin-American setting, is presented. One way to a renewal experience that would help confirm members and thus prevent dropouts is suggested.

Architecture Master Theses

This study is about the residential location of the upper-income class in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It focuses on the spatial pattern of this location and its relationship with the characteristics of the natural environment and the availability of public services and facilities.

During the nineteenth century, the first elite settlements were formed outside the city center in a spatial pattern which approximated to Hoyt's Sector Model: …
