The Production Of Space: Indigenous Resistance Movements In The Peruvian Amazon, Christian Calienes
The Production Of Space: Indigenous Resistance Movements In The Peruvian Amazon, Christian Calienes
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The resistance movement that resulted in the Baguazo in the northern Peruvian Amazon in 2009 was the culmination of a series of social, economic, political and spatial processes that reflected the Peruvian nation’s engagement with global capitalism and democratic consolidation after decades of crippling instability and chaos. The recently discovered oil and natural gas reserves that occupy the subsoil of much the Peruvian Amazon provide the latest natural resource upon which the national project can continue to be implemented. In a context of neo-imperialism and neo-extractivism where through accumulation by dispossession, new markets are introduced into global capitalist structures after …
Movements And Political Parties In The 21st Century: Exploring The Role Of Icts, Human Development, And Political-Activism Culture In East Asia And Latin America, Wilneida Negron
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The dynamics between social movements and political parties are shifting in the 21st century. Due to the emergence of information communication technologies (ICTs), political parties are facing increased pressure to use ICTs to co-exist, complement, and nurture social movements and empowered civic communities (Nahon, 2015). However, this shift is not ahistorical and technologically deterministic. Rather, the shifting relationship between social movements and political parties is one that can be shaped by a variety of demographic and socio-economic factors as well as preexisting cultures of resistance, activism, and electoral campaigning. This research examines potential patterns and casual mechanisms which can help …

The Paradoxes Of Informalizing Street Trade In The Latin American City, Lissette Aliaga-Linares
Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Publications
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to challenge the default portrayal of street trade as an informal occupation and spatial practice, by examining comparatively the changes in the regulatory frameworks of two politically distinct city administrations in Latin America since the introduction of the informal economy debate.
Design/methodology/approach – This paper draws from a comparative case study design to synthesize evidence from historical administrative records, secondary research and materials from a two-year fieldwork carried out in Lima and Bogotá in 2008 and 2009.
Findings – The author argues that the incorporation of the informal economy framework into local …
Tides Of Cooperation: The Ebb And Flow Of Regional Cooperation In Latin America, Amaleia E. Kolovos
Tides Of Cooperation: The Ebb And Flow Of Regional Cooperation In Latin America, Amaleia E. Kolovos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Regional organizations have developed into important global actors as they negotiate inter-regional trade agreements, regulate economic policies, and develop international security communities. States have much to gain from such regional cooperation efforts particularly in emerging regions such as Latin America. Such gains can include increased trade and economic relations, enhanced security, attracting external investment, and increasing bargaining power at the international level. With such gains to be had, one might expect states in these regions to regularly cooperate in order to achieve their common interests. However, this is clearly not always the case. Latin America has struggled for decades with …

Young People’S Views Of Government, Peaceful Coexistence, And Diversity In Five Latin American Countries: Iea International Civic And Citizenship Education Study 2016 Latin American Report, Wolfram Schulz, John Ainley, Cristián Cox, Tim Friedman
Civics and Citizenship Assessment
ICCS 2016 was the second cycle of the IEA Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS). ICCS studies the ways in which education systems from around the world prepare young people to undertake their roles as citizens in society. In Latin America, this area of learning is set within particular challenges and contexts. Compared to established Western democracies, most countries in this region returned to democratic rule only three or four decades ago or even more recently, and their political, social, and economic stability continues to be called into question. Surveys have consistently found that commitment to democracy among adults in …
Social Medicine And International Expert Networks In Latin America, 1930–1945, Eric D. Carter
Social Medicine And International Expert Networks In Latin America, 1930–1945, Eric D. Carter
Faculty Publications
This paper examines the international networks that influenced ideas and policy in social medicine in the 1930s and 1940s in Latin America, focusing on institutional networks organised by the League of Nations Health Organization, the International Labour Organization, and the Pan-American Sanitary Bureau. After examining the architecture of these networks, this paper traces their influence on social and health policy in two policy domains: social security and nutrition. Closer scrutiny of a series of international conferences and local media accounts of them reveals that international networks were not just ‘conveyor belts’ for policy ideas from the industrialised countries of the …
Populism: A Puzzle Without (And For) World-Systems Analysis, Leslie C. Gates
Populism: A Puzzle Without (And For) World-Systems Analysis, Leslie C. Gates
Sociology Faculty Scholarship
This essay shows how world-systems analysis provides a more rigorous explanation for the recent rise of disparate populisms, countering negative stereotypes of mainstream accounts that obscure how formative populist leaders emerged from authentic progressive movements which challenged capitalists. Existing analyses have also failed to specify the varied economic projects of populists, their likely social bases and their relationships to world markets. The essay recommends relational comparisons of populists to unravel populism’s puzzles and advance world-systems analysis.
The Promise And Perils Of Radical Left Populism: The Case Of Venezuela., Gabriel Hetland
The Promise And Perils Of Radical Left Populism: The Case Of Venezuela., Gabriel Hetland
Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship
Mainstream critics argue that populism inevitably leads to economic disaster and political authoritarianism. Venezuela is often pointed to as proof of this. Yet, while the profound crisis gripping Venezuela is undeniable, comprehensive analysis of Chavismo shows that populism, and specifically the radical left populism found in Venezuela, is more ambiguous. From 2005-2013 radical left populism in Venezuela reduced poverty and inequality, deepened democracy, and built popular support for a "transition to socialism." These gains were erased in the post-2014 crisis, which revealed two flaws of the Chavista model hidden by its earlier success: its unsustainable material foundation and inability to …
The Gendered Impact Of Neoliberalism: Violence And Exploitation Of Women Working In Maquiladoras, Alice Schyllander
The Gendered Impact Of Neoliberalism: Violence And Exploitation Of Women Working In Maquiladoras, Alice Schyllander
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The global production process relies on classism, racism, and sexism to generate a reliable workforce in the global south to produce goods for the global north. Women who work in maquiladoras in Mexico disproportionately occupy low-wage, dangerous jobs that leave them more vulnerable to violence both in the workplace and in their communities. The human rights of women workers in maquiladoras will not be realized until the domestic and international mechanisms that are intended to provide labor protections are strengthened. Better working conditions have been achieved in maquiladoras through grassroots organizing efforts.
New Public Policies And Care Work At The Crossroads Of Formalisation/Informalization (Brazil), Isabel Georges
New Public Policies And Care Work At The Crossroads Of Formalisation/Informalization (Brazil), Isabel Georges
Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)
In the context of Latin-American studies of informality since the 1960s, and based on a case study of three care work scenarios, this article proposes a reflexion on the Brazilian State's (paradoxical) tendency during the first decade of the millennium towards formalisation in a relational perspective. The way in which the State regulates this work contributes directly to the depoliticization of the poor, and more widely, to neoliberal governance. The article shows how this governance, beyond instrumentalizing the work of poor women, also individuates them and creates new hierarchies. The novelty of these policies resides in the activation and transfer …
The Comparative Lethality Of Two Disparate World Regions : An Examination Of Latin America And Europe To Explain Discrepant Homicide Trends, Karise Marie Curtis
The Comparative Lethality Of Two Disparate World Regions : An Examination Of Latin America And Europe To Explain Discrepant Homicide Trends, Karise Marie Curtis
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Within recent decades, homicide rates in Latin American nations have strongly diverged from those of European nations. The former experienced a sharp increase in the last two decades, while the latter have experienced the oft-characterized “modern crime decline.” However, few studies have endeavored to explain this divergence, and many that do often attribute any differences to a regional dummy variable said to characterize some unique phenomenon occurring in the region (i.e., machismo) without modeling specifically for levels of said phenomenon. As such, this study uses a panel extension of a well-known homicide model (Land, McCall, & Cohen, 1990) in a …
Copla: A Transnational Criminal Court For Latin America & The Caribbean, Robert Currie, Jacob Leon
Copla: A Transnational Criminal Court For Latin America & The Caribbean, Robert Currie, Jacob Leon
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
States in the Latin American and Caribbean regions have long called for the creation of an independent, international court to prosecute members of transnational organized crime gangs. These organizations not only profit from the illicit traffic in drugs, people and cultural property, but are able to corrupt and undermine the domestic legal systems and judiciaries of the affected states. This paper examines the current proposal for the creation of the "Latin American and Caribbean Criminal Court Against Transnational Organized Crime" (COPLA). It reviews the rationale for creating such a court, examines the main pillars of the current proposal, and suggests …
Truth And Reconciliation Commissions And The Search For Justice: A Comparative Study Of Chile, Argentina And Guatemala, Pastor Jose Arroyo
Truth And Reconciliation Commissions And The Search For Justice: A Comparative Study Of Chile, Argentina And Guatemala, Pastor Jose Arroyo
CMC Senior Theses
During the mid to late 1900s many Latin American countries found themselves under the rule of violent military regimes and in civil war. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the atrocities committed in the late 20th century throughout Latin America and to discuss the ways in which these societies, affected by state violence, were able to overcome the past. In this paper, I will look at the purpose of truth and reconciliation commissions and their outcomes in Chile, Argentina, and Guatemala in order to find some similarities and compare and contrast the successes and failures of the different …
