Computerized Method For Reverse Logistics Of Medical Devices With Non-Overrideable Safety Blocking, Actual-Cost Valuation, And Atomic Transactions, Alessandro Caccia
Defensive Publications Series
A computer-implemented method is disclosed for managing reverse logistics of medical devices and injectable products with limited remaining shelf life. Each movement is subject to a mandatory safety check per individual unit, designed to operate also in the absence of network connectivity, using a local copy of safety notices. Notices are collected from heterogeneous regulatory sources, with qualified-operator validation for sources lacking a programmable interface, and a two-level block with distinct revocation authorities is applied. In the presence of an active safety notice the product value is zero; otherwise value is calculated from the actual lot purchase price, applying nonlinear …
Multimodal Generative Biosignal Synthesis Using Continuous-Time Diffusion, Dongeek Shin
Multimodal Generative Biosignal Synthesis Using Continuous-Time Diffusion, Dongeek Shin
Defensive Publications Series
Everyday wearable devices, such as smartwatches, smart rings, and fitness trackers, track valuable health metrics, but analyzing this data becomes tricky when sensors record at different speeds, miss measurements, or get bumped during exercise. Traditional processing methods attempt to fix this by dropping or padding data, which visibly destroys important physiological details. This publication describes a generative artificial intelligence (AI) system that uses machine learning to seamlessly combine health signals recorded at different speeds, automatically reconstruct corrupted data gaps (data imputation), and dynamically generate a biometric profile or digital twin of the user’s physiology to run interactive “what-if” simulations and …

Sense-Level Vocabulary State And In-Reading Inference For Assisted Reading: Methods And System, Xiang Wu
Sense-Level Vocabulary State And In-Reading Inference For Assisted Reading: Methods And System, Xiang Wu
Defensive Publications Series
This technical disclosure describes methods and a system for assisted reading of foreign-language text in which a reader's vocabulary knowledge is recorded per word sense rather than per word form. During offline preprocessing, every content-word occurrence in a book is mapped to an ID in a global, incrementally built sense inventory (dictionary defaults for unambiguous words; a language model for the rest, which also reviews the defaults). While reading, the reader clicks the words they do not know in a paragraph and confirms the paragraph; the senses of clicked tokens are recorded as unknown and the senses of all other …
Dynamic User Interface Calibration Of An External Display Using A Head-Mounted Device, Vivek Kushwaha
Dynamic User Interface Calibration Of An External Display Using A Head-Mounted Device, Vivek Kushwaha
Defensive Publications Series
User interfaces on external displays can be static, which may lead to suboptimal viewing experiences at varying distances, while some dynamic solutions can have limitations. Systems and methods are described that use a camera on a head-mounted device (HMD) to determine a user's spatial relationship to an external display. The HMD may capture video of the display, calculate the user's distance and viewing angle based on the display's appearance in the camera's view, and transmit this data wirelessly to the display. In response, the external display can dynamically adjust its user interface, for example, by modifying element sizes and information …
Personalizing A Shared Display Using Context From Egocentric Vision, Vivek Kushwaha
Personalizing A Shared Display Using Context From Egocentric Vision, Vivek Kushwaha
Defensive Publications Series
Content recommendation systems for shared displays may lack awareness of a user's real-time physical context, potentially affecting the relevance of suggestions. The described techniques detail a system that can use a wearable computing device (e.g., smart glasses with an egocentric camera, a smart watch, etc.) to identify an object a user is interacting with. This object context can be validated and wirelessly communicated (e.g., via a local or personal area network) to a nearby shared display, such as a smart television or public kiosk.

Introduction:
Social and structural drivers of health, including environmental exposures such as air pollution, are increasingly recognized as essential components of equitable health care delivery. Despite this, internal medicine residents often face barriers to meaningfully incorporating environmental health considerations into clinical decision-making. Increasing learner interaction with “gamification” of these subjects has shown promise in improving learner engagement, autonomy, and competence in nontraditional biomedical topics. This project describes the development of an immersive escape room–style educational intervention focused on the health impacts of air quality for internal medicine residents.
Methods:
In December of 2025, two internal medicine faculty participated in a …

Community-Based Water Management Through Cultural Ecosystem Services: Traditional Wisdom And Modern Adaptation In Senjoyo Spring, Indonesia, Puji Winarti, Sri Haryani, Sri Wardani, Langlang Handayani
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Small-scale freshwater ecosystems play vital ecological and cultural roles. However, community-based water management (CBWM) often lacks a clear analytical approach to integrating cultural ecosystem services (CES) and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), limiting the practical understanding of culturally grounded governance. To address this gap, this qualitative study explores the interactions between CES and TEK, analyzes their roles within CBWM, and identifies their implications for sustainable water governance. The integration between cultural value and local ecological knowledge makes Senjoyo Spring an appropriate location for this study. Data were collected through interviews with 20 key informants, field observations, forum group discussions (FGDs), and …

Beyond Fragmentation: A Multidimensional Framework For Green Product Innovation, David Mayorga, Jorge Tello-Gamarra, Martín Hernani-Merino, Sonia Oré
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Green product innovation (GPI) has become an essential strategy for companies to address environmental challenges while strengthening their competitiveness in a sustainable manner. However, important gaps remain in understanding how internal organizational factors interact with external pressures that shape their implementation. Existing conceptual frameworks have advanced the identification of these factors, but they often focus only on direct relationships and overlook the mechanisms that connect them. They also tend to adopt narrow perspectives that fail to capture the hybrid complexity observed in empirical evidence. This study aims to develop an integrative conceptual framework that synthesizes the antecedents, processes, and outcomes …
Results Without Reasons, Margaret H. Lemos
Results Without Reasons, Margaret H. Lemos
Vanderbilt Law Review
Modern theories of precedent assume a connection between the outcome of a case and the reasons that support it. A case stands as precedent not (only) for its result but for its ratio decidendi, the rationale on which the decision is based. But what happens when there is no such rationale—when a multimember court issues a decision without majority agreement on the reasons? In the Supreme Court, such cases are governed by Marks v. United States, which instructs lower courts to find the Court’s holding in the position of the Justice(s) who “concurred in the judgments on the …
The Normative Canons Of Criminal Law, Brian G. Slocum
The Normative Canons Of Criminal Law, Brian G. Slocum
Vanderbilt Law Review
The rule of lenity is an ancient maxim directing that ambiguities in criminal statutes be interpreted in favor of defendants. Courts rarely rely on the rule of lenity, though, and its future is currently being debated. Justice Kavanaugh argues for its elimination, even as Justice Gorsuch argues for it to be strengthened. Most commentators agree with Justice Gorsuch, typically advocating that the rule of lenity be made more powerful. This Article argues for a different approach: The rule of lenity can be strengthened by limiting it to resolving linguistic ambiguity.
This Article explains why the rule of lenity plays an …
Weird Cops (Agency Police), Farhang Heydari
Weird Cops (Agency Police), Farhang Heydari
Vanderbilt Law Review
The police badge has migrated deep into the administrative state. Parks, schools, transit, housing, revenue, conservation, insurance, and gaming agencies now field tens of thousands of sworn “Agency Police”—often with full arrest powers despite missions far removed from general public safety. The footprint of these officers is significant and expanding, outpacing the growth of traditional law enforcement. Far from being limited to certain communities, Agency Police attract support across the political spectrum, from law-and-order policymakers to reformers. And yet, Agency Police are largely ignored in legal scholarship. The result is that a large slice of U.S. criminal enforcement is poorly …
A Century Of Complexity: Reassessing Jurisdictional Veil Piercing In Light Of Modern Corporate Structures, Dominic Steve Brown
A Century Of Complexity: Reassessing Jurisdictional Veil Piercing In Light Of Modern Corporate Structures, Dominic Steve Brown
Vanderbilt Law Review
Modern corporate enterprises frequently operate through intricate networks of layered subsidiaries, yet courts continue to rely on a rigid and outdated presumption of corporate separateness rooted in a decision predating the current personal jurisdiction regime. In the context of jurisdictional veil piercing, this presumption of separateness has produced doctrinal confusion, inconsistent outcomes, and underenforcement against parent corporations that frequently control, and profit from, forum-based activities carried out by subsidiaries.
This Note argues that the prevailing approach, involving the importation of substantive corporate law doctrines into the jurisdictional analysis, contravenes both modern personal jurisdiction doctrine and contemporary corporate practice. Drawing on …

Pe2prompt: A Large Language Model-Native Framework For Interpretable Static Malware Analysis, Yilin Sun, Mohammad Masum
Pe2prompt: A Large Language Model-Native Framework For Interpretable Static Malware Analysis, Yilin Sun, Mohammad Masum
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Large Language Models (LLMs) possess strong general-purpose reasoning abilities, yet their integration into static malware analysis pipelines remains limited due to the representational gap between high-dimensional numerical features and the natural-language input format required for inference. This study introduces PE2Prompt, a Large Language Model-native framework for interpretable and industrially deployable static malware analysis. PE2Prompt formalizes a modular process that bridges numeric PE features and LLM reasoning through three key components: (1) LLM-guided feature curation directly from raw EMBER JSON fields to identify semantically relevant attributes; (2) numerical feature summarization, compressing byte-histogram and entropy distributions into interpretable descriptors; and (3) structured …

Community-Based Well Testing And Outreach To Mitigate Human Health Risk From Unsafe Drinking Water, W. Adam Sigler, Katharine Sutphen, Margaret J Eggers, Kaleena Miller, Michelle Grocke-Dewey
Journal of Extension
Twenty-two percent of groundwater wells tested nationwide have one or more contaminants above a health threshold, yet many private well owners are unaware of these risks because they have not tested their water. Researchers piloted a community well testing clinic for education/outreach and surveyed participants about outcomes. Two months later, 75% of participants with high or intermediate health risk water quality results had taken action or intended to, indicating that community private well testing clinics can be effective in mitigating human health risks from contaminated drinking water.
Educating Livestock Producers And Monitoring The Ecological Health Of Grazing Spaces, Morgan Mathisonslee, Matt R. Raven, Crista Derry
Educating Livestock Producers And Monitoring The Ecological Health Of Grazing Spaces, Morgan Mathisonslee, Matt R. Raven, Crista Derry
Journal of Extension
Addressing the climate catastrophe requires a systems approach with a focus on regenerating agricultural landscapes. To address these complex problems, we offered a monitoring training focused on a systems approach to livestock stewardship using the Savory Institute's Ecological Outcomes Verification protocol to monitor ecosystem health. The training encouraged producers to use systems-based management practices to promote ecological regeneration. We found that despite producers not adopting the monitoring protocol, there were increases in the ecological health of their farms. We suggest Extension professionals consider teaching similar ecological monitoring protocols to benefit producers and support claims about regenerative agriculture.

The Effects Of Restorative Practices On Student Behavior And School Climate: A Case Study, Victoria Smith, M.A.T., Donna Governor, Ph.D, Carlise Womack-Wynne, Ed.D
Current Issues in Middle Level Education
Schools have been seeking alternatives to punitive discipline measures. As an alternative, restorative practices offer healing, community, and relationships. This case study examined a middle school that had been implementing restorative practices since the 2019–2020 school year, three full years at the time of study. A mixed-methods design was used in order to investigate whether the implementation of restorative practices had resulted in a decrease of student misbehaviors and an increase in staff perceptions of school climate. Staff were interviewed (n = 19) and surveyed (n = 44). A thematic analysis was conducted on the interview data, and …

“Learning To Ask The Deeper Questions Behind The Image That Most People Don’T See:” Teaching Critical Visual Literacy To History Teacher Candidates Through Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Heather Koopmans, Richard Hughes
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Despite the ubiquitous role of images in teaching history, few teachers have formal training in how to help students critically read photographs, paintings, and other images. The essay centers on research on how Critical Visual Literacy, which focuses on how images reflect complex issues of power in society, can assist emerging teachers in helping students think historically and better engage visual evidence associated with curriculum mandates to broaden historical narratives

Using Scenario-Based Generative Ai In A Social Studies Methods Course, Timothy Lintner, Ellis Reeves
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly transforming the landscape of educator preparation. This shift is especially evident in social studies. As emerging technologies like AI reshape how social studies is taught and learned, it is essential to incorporate them into course design and student outcomes. Simply put, we must ensure that the next generation of social studies educators can effectively use AI to create real-world, scenario-based learning experiences that foster inquiry and encourage student action-taking. This article examines how AI-supported, scenario-based learning was strategically integrated into a secondary social studies methods course at the University of South Carolina Aiken. From concept …
‘There Is No Continuity’: Assessment Of Pre-Service Teachers' Ability To Analyse Historical Sources In Two Ghanaian Public Universities, Anitha Oforiwah Adu-Boahen
‘There Is No Continuity’: Assessment Of Pre-Service Teachers' Ability To Analyse Historical Sources In Two Ghanaian Public Universities, Anitha Oforiwah Adu-Boahen
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
The paper examined student-teachers’ understanding of change and continuity in History. Using a convergent parallel mixed method approach, one hundred and thirty-five (135) student-teachers from two public universities examined images depicting classroom settings in Ghana’s educational system from different periods. Respondents were expected to show and explain the continuities and changes in the different periods in Ghanaian history. They were to focus on the disparities in ‘change’ and ‘continuities’ in classroom settings in the Ghanaian educational system over time. Again, student-teachers were expected to transform their knowledge of these changes into historical understanding by writing an interpretation from the sources. …

Using The Past To Better Understand The Present: Contextualizing Today’S History Wars, For Ourselves And For Our Students, Bonnie Laughlin-Schultz
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
This essay considers our contemporary moment in the context of the long history of the so-called "history wars" in the United States. It identifies four historical moments with ties to the present, and makes use of primary documents to discuss each time period. It also considers the ways in which historical activists such as Frederick Douglass and W. E. B. Du Bois advocated for honest history in the past, and the ways in which we might argue for nuanced historical thinking in the present. Teachers may find the documents of use for their own classrooms, and a brief appendix at …
The End Of Unmeasured Exploitation: How A.S.M., C.A.S., And S.I.A. Challenge Digital Attention Capitalism, Delante Clark
The End Of Unmeasured Exploitation: How A.S.M., C.A.S., And S.I.A. Challenge Digital Attention Capitalism, Delante Clark
Graduate Scholarship and Creative Works
Digital attention capitalism generates value through the capture and monetization of human attention, yet it has historically lacked standardized mechanisms for measuring attention-related harm. This paper argues that the Attention Safeguard Models (A.S.M.), Cognitive Attentional Standards (C.A.S.), and Sociological Impact Assessment (S.I.A.) collectively challenge this system by introducing an integrated framework for classifying, measuring, and evaluating digital attention harm and its societal consequences. C.A.S. provides standardized measurement of digital attention harm, A.S.M. identifies and classifies patterns of attentional disruption and manipulation, and S.I.A. evaluates broader impacts on institutions, communities, civic engagement, education, social cohesion, and inequality. Together, these systems transform …
