Masculinity, Labor, And Sexual Power, Ann C. Mcginley
Masculinity, Labor, And Sexual Power, Ann C. Mcginley
Scholarly Works
This Essay focuses on gender and sexuality to analyze Hannah Rosin's thesis in the The End of Men. It relies in large part on feminist and masculinities theories to consider how men and women may both suffer gendered disadvantage. It looks specifically at Las Vegas, a market that is sexualized, in order to complicate Rosin's narrative, and to create a better understanding of what is happening in the U.S. workforce. While the Las Vegas market is not representative of markets across the country, it is economically and socially significant and, with the expansion of the casino and gaming industries …

Unlv Students To Build Zero Net Energy Home; Boom & Bust Report, Nevada Institute For Renewable Energy Commercialization (Nirec)
Nevada Newsflash
Design and build an approximately 800 square foot home that consumes zero net energy.
Those are the instructions for Team Las Vegas, after the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) became one of only 20 schools worldwide to quality for the 2013 Solar Decathlon, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
UNLV’s entry, Autonomy House, is marketed as an “age-in-place” home for an empty nester whose children have grown up. The 730-squarefoot home will use daylighting from windows, insulation and solar panels to produce more energy than it consumes. Additionally, it will filter rainwater for household …

UNLV Innovation
Why do metropolitan areas need to ensure that their universities, corporations, and independent laboratories conduct abundant, top-flight research and development?
Why would Southern Nevada do well to build up its research capability, particularly in the sciences and engineering?
The answer has to do with what has increasingly emerged as an unavoidable syllogism of economic competitiveness. To put it simply: Prosperity depends on productivity; productivity depends heavily on innovation, and innovation depends heavily on research and development.
The bottom line: A region thin on R&D is not likely to be innovative, and if it is not innovative, it will probably not …

Effects Of Water Conservation On Evapotranspiration In Las Vegas, Nevada, Joseph Belli
Effects Of Water Conservation On Evapotranspiration In Las Vegas, Nevada, Joseph Belli
Master's Theses
Las Vegas, Nevada, is a rapidly growing arid city that is experiencing significant challenges in water consumption. Most of the water is used outdoors, precluding recycling and reuse of water. With a large increase in population, the Southern Nevada Water Authority created the Water Smart Landscape Program to limit outdoor water usage. This study used remote sensing images and techniques to examine how much water was lost to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration (ET) in the Las Vegas metropolitan region from 1999 to 2009. The results showed that both extreme weather conditions and water policy influence ET rates.

Reclaiming Prosperity: Repositioning Southern Nevada For The Next Economy, Bruce Katz
Reclaiming Prosperity: Repositioning Southern Nevada For The Next Economy, Bruce Katz
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
The outlines of the next American economy are coming into focus, yet the future remains uncertain in Southern Nevada as America's newest metropolis labors through a major recession. It is time therefore to get back on track and begin laying the foundation for a new and more durable kind of growth in metropolitan Las Vegas and across the Intermountain West. To help with that, urban visionary Bruce Katz advanced a powerful depiction of the next American economy in a major UNLV lecture and articulated a bold agenda for helping Las Vegas reclaim prosperity in the new era.
