Piping Water From Rural Counties To Fuel Growth In Las Vegas, Nevada: Water Transfer Risks In The Arid Usa West, Lisa Welsh, Joanna Endter-Wada

The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) plans to build a 300-mile pipeline to transfer groundwater from five rural basins in north-eastern Nevada south to the greater Las Vegas metropolitan area. Relying on the path dependence literature, we trace the policy choices and legal battles that have led to southern Nevada’s proposed Groundwater Development Project. We find that policy decisions over time, often initiated by powerful water policy entrepreneurs, have fuelled southern Nevada’s rapid growth and development. After emphasising water demand management for more than two decades, SNWA has revived its controversial plans to increase water supplies by importing water from …

Faculty Opportunity Awards help innovative ideas blossom into fully formed scientific and scholarly investigations.
UNLV’s Faculty Opportunity Awards program provides seed funding for faculty researchers with promising ideas and a desire to pursue additional funding from government agencies, foundations, or private industry. The program has supported a wide variety of campus research projects involving multidisciplinary teams, single investigators, and other faculty working to develop intellectual property.

Seismic Response Of An Older Bridge In Nevada Under Maximum Considered Earthquake, Ryan Thomas Isaac
Seismic Response Of An Older Bridge In Nevada Under Maximum Considered Earthquake, Ryan Thomas Isaac
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Given the aging infrastructure in the United States, a study was conducted on an older bridge in Nevada to determine its performance under the maximum considered earthquake. A suite of eight synthetic site-specific ground motions, including a spectrum-matched “RSP” record, were applied along both the longitudinal and transverse axes of Bridge G-953 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The supplementary materials contain the original drawings of Bridge G-953 for reference, including changes to the expansion joints and the addition of cable restrainers at the in-span hinges. A detailed model, including the effects of column nonlinearity, material degradation such as shear keys, abutment …

This Is Not The Color Yellow | A Thesis On Projecting Materiality, Annagrace Walton
Architecture Senior Theses
This thesis reimagines the traditional materiality of the architectural façade by coupling the functional and aesthetic expectations of the day-lit building face with the supplementary material and narrative possibilities of a projected night time display. Engaging the potential of new architectural technologies, the thesis celebrates both the novel and sensational qualities of physically manifested materials and textures while simultaneously exploring the future possibilities of virtual and augmented materials through digital projection mapping.
Set in spectacle-friendly Las Vegas, Nevada, the test site for this experimentation is the Flamingo Resort in Las Vegas, a pivotal intersection of pedestrian and motor traffic. Re-cladding …

Theses and Dissertations
My work explores hallucinatory landscapes of the US American West by using a combination of painting styles outside of the Western painting canon. I cross-reference painting and cinema, interweaving video, acrylic paint and the panorama to create a satirical homage to the history and present state of the USA. However, through an earnest devotion to the medium - both painting and cinema - I find my criticisms also yearn to hold onto a belief in a myth I know to be false.
This is an American History conversation about artifice and consumerism through advertising. I use Las Vegas and the …

It shouldn’t surprise you to learn that all major metropolitan areas across the United States are home to top-tier research universities. Each of these universities contributes in myriad ways to the success of their cities: They help create a thriving economy, a sophisticated and productive work force, and a vibrant quality of life. These universities generate the kind of capital, both human and monetary, that helps their communities flourish. So it is a bit mystifying to most people why Las Vegas and the state of Nevada lack a research university of this strength and caliber.
