State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
[From the introductory material]
This is Old Dominion University’s 22nd annual State of the Region Report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion, its president, Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., the Board of Visitors, the Strome College of Business or the generous donors who support the activities of the Dragas Center for Economic Analysis and Policy.
Over the past year, we have endured the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, the introduction of vaccines and a return to a semblance of normality in …

On January 18, 2015, Stanford University student-athlete Brock Turner sexually assaulted an unconscious woman outside a university fraternity house. Brock Turner was found guilty of three felonies, including assault with intent to rape. At his sentencing on June 2, 2016, the survivor of this assault read a 7,000-word victim impact statement describing the effect of the assault on her life. At the time, she was an unnamed victim known as Emily Doe. However, in September 2019, Chanel Miller reclaimed her identity as the author of that statement. She shared her story for the first time before the release of her …

At a time when many U.S. newspapers find themselves at the edge of a financial precipice, The Salt Lake Tribune’s recent transformation into a 501(c)(3) public charity presents a potentially promising route to economic safety for other daily newspapers. Although the nonprofit, tax-exempt model has been an increasingly popular one for new media outlets, the IRS’s bestowal of such status on a major daily newspaper marks an historic event—one that other newspapers, and their legal counsel, can learn from. This Article outlines several issues such practitioners and owners should be aware of as they consider taking the leap to …
Socially Constructed Journalism And Lone Wolf Terrorists - A New York City Experience, Adrienne Pascal
Socially Constructed Journalism And Lone Wolf Terrorists - A New York City Experience, Adrienne Pascal
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractJournalistic reporting normalized radical lone wolf terrorist activities compromising public and national safety. The purpose of this research was to explore news reports of four radical lone wolf events that occurred in New York City (NYC) between 2010 and 2017 to identify political slant toward societal normalization of radical lone wolf behavior. The framework of this phenomenological study was Borum’s four-stage pathway mindset model of terrorism combined with Berger and Luckmann’s social construction theory. The central research question addressed how socially constructed journalism stories of lone wolf terrorist events in NYC aligned with liberal to conservative political newsprint continuums. Data …

Abstract
At its core, journalism is a civic enterprise with a mission to help citizens better understand their world and communities. Fulfilling this lofty mission in today’s digital media landscape poses new and evolving challenges, but it also presents a unique opportunity to reexamine the relationship between storytellers and their audiences. Advancements in the learning sciences in recent decades offer important insights into how the mind works. In teaching and learning, pedagogical experts and practitioners increasingly utilize these insights to refine and implement instructional strategies that increase student engagement, motivation, and learning. This capstone project aims to establish a framework …

In my research and interviews throughout my Practicum, the topic of refugee representation in the media was frequently discussed. The most common narrative around refugee lives constructs them as dehumanised victims. In an article for The Independent, Emily Cousens writes about the portrayal of the so-called “good” and the “bad” refugee -- in other words, the refugees who are deemed deserving of reception, and those who are not. Cousens reflects upon how the photo of a dead refugee child on the shore of Turkey sparked a wave of global interest in the issues that refugees were facing. She highlights …

Being in both the Spanish and Documentary concentrations, I had to produce a short documentary in the Spanish language and produce a piece of written work to go along with it. For my capstone, I chose to focus on a homicide case that happened in Mexico City in 2015. It caught international attention and although many people have their own thoughts and beliefs as to what happened that day, I wanted to provide a platform for the families to express their own feelings of loss, injustice, and their own versions of the truth. This case was highly distorted by the …

Fifty Years Ago, My Grandfather Won The Nyc Marathon And Changed New York History, Colin M. Kern

In 1970, my grandfather won the first New York City Marathon. This piece of long-form narrative journalism tells the story of how that race grew into the largest race in the world, which fosters New York City's colossal running community. The article is accompanied by photos, an animation that breaks down the original New York City Marathon course, and gif's that compare running footwear from the '70s and today.
Is Media Assistance Obsolete? A Practice-Based Perspective On The Potential For Digital Technologies To Achieve Media Development Goals In Sub-Saharan Africa, Daire Higgins
Doctoral
The area of media assistance is not a widely known part of the Development Aid sector, even though it has been in existence since after World War II and has grown significantly since then as part of the development agenda. Media Assistance has been included in the strategies of Western and non Western donors as part of their overseas Aid programmes in many regions, supporting journalism and media with the objectives of contributing to accountability, transparency, governance and ultimately, democracy. This thesis examines the impact on the Media Assistance sector of the arrival of digital technologies into the ‘information ecosystems’ …

Feasting On Words: What University Students Learn When They Study Food Writing And Food Media, Janet K. Keeler
Feasting On Words: What University Students Learn When They Study Food Writing And Food Media, Janet K. Keeler
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The use of food in college curriculum is unique in its ability to create lasting impact because of the keen interest millennial and Generation Z students have in what they eat and drink. Studying media with food at its core is an underutilized mechanism to show how food intersects with the lives of all people thus encouraging students to look beyond their own experiences to consider the wider society. A program evaluation of 10 semesters of food writing and food media courses at a Florida public university reveals the ways in which students make deeper connections to culture and current …

Literary Journalism As A Clash Of Genres Between Journalistic Literature And Fiction, Votim Hanoli
Literary Journalism As A Clash Of Genres Between Journalistic Literature And Fiction, Votim Hanoli
UBT International Conference
We talk about online journalism, media on social networks, virtual communication, etc., but we have neglected and forgotten the essence of all this: writing, through which the text and communication are outlined. "If you are going to write, write"! - it is said in a "theorem" of the methodology of classical writing. But the question arises: How and for what to write? The purpose of this paper is to show that the main and most essential point of commonality is the fact that both of these areas have at their center the art and perfection of the way of writing …

They have exposed campus outbreaks and questioned reopening plans. They have documented social-distancing violations at fraternity and sorority houses. And through it all they have boldly told the story of the human experience.
Famously, at the University of North Carolina, the Daily Tar Heel published a biting editorial under the headline “UNC has a clusterfuck on its hands,” after virus clusters were identified in campus housing. And the day that Notre Dame announced it would move only temporarily …

Measuring Objectivity In Documentary Film, Christopher Gordon Bailey
Measuring Objectivity In Documentary Film, Christopher Gordon Bailey
Theses and Dissertations
Documentary films and journalistic work share many common attributes. At their foundation, both tell stories about communities and important topics to people in those communities. Yet, when asked about trust in the medium, individuals generally show a significantly higher respect for documentary films than journalism. One way to understand how a media product may be trusted is through its objectivity, a concept that is important to journalists but not as crucial to documentary films. This thesis considers how the principles of objectivity may manifest in observational documentary film through a qualitative content analysis. Findings indicate that some measures of objectivity …
