A Hypermedia Design For Both High And Low Knowledge Readers, Jonathan Vickers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this case study is to examine possibilities for improving upon hypermedia design in regards to readers and their varied levels of prior knowledge. By creating a hypermedia website that looks at the development of rock climbing at Coopers Rock State Forest, I will explore the possibility of using prompts intended to help prepare readers with low levels of subject (rock climbing) knowledge to understand and make sense of the content. However, at the same time, it is important to allow readers with high levels of subject knowledge to bypass these prompts because of their ability to limit …

Creative Idea Generation: How To Incorporate Plussing Into Your Creative Thinking Sessions, Whitney Godwin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of this master's thesis is to evaluate Disney's "plussing" as a form of idea-generation for every type of organization and business. This method was assessed through a case study of two nonprofit organizations in Morgantown, West Virginia after developing three original plussing methods. Both organizations participated in plussing sessions. Sessions were followed up with a survey of each participant. Findings suggest "plussing" has proven more beneficial to the organizations than traditional brainstorming methods. Several participants stated that plussing provides a more effective way for organizations to produce the best idea and product possible without the fear of criticism …

Presidential Rhetoric In Times Of Crisis: A Textual Analysis Of Speeches By Franklin Roosevelt And Ronald Reagan, Samantha D. Cart May 2014

Presidential Rhetoric In Times Of Crisis: A Textual Analysis Of Speeches By Franklin Roosevelt And Ronald Reagan, Samantha D. Cart

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While many scholars have examined the rhetoric of presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan individually, there is a gap in literature concerning crisis rhetoric specifically and little has been done in the way of comparing these two men. This study is a textual analysis of six speeches given by Roosevelt and Reagan during times of crises. Because both presidents were important in defining an era and considered great communicators, this study compares the similarities and differences of their use of presidential crisis rhetoric. Previous research shows clear patterns in presidential rhetoric, including the common use of civil religious words and …

User-Generated Content And Television News, Eva M. Buchman May 2014

User-Generated Content And Television News, Eva M. Buchman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this master's thesis is to investigate the relationship between television news stations and user-generated content. With the technological growth our society has experienced over the last several years, user-generated content has become a popular way for television stations to gather news. This relationship was investigated through a national online survey of news directors/executive producers at television stations. Also studied were policies at television stations regarding the use of user-generated content, whether they are formal, written policies, or informal policies, to determine how user-generated content is integrated into television news broadcasts. Findings suggest that television news stations exercise …

Understanding Homelessness, Yusra Jabeen Apr 2014

Understanding Homelessness, Yusra Jabeen

Collection of Engaged Learning

“Face of homelessness in Dallas” is a creative, research‐based project. Its findings are based on one‐on‐one interviews with homeless people and people working with them. I worked frequently with The Stewpot in Dallas, TX on this project. The Stewpot is an organization focused on issues of homelessness and has been in existence since 1975. I took portraits of homeless people and chose the stories that touched me the most for this publication. Some of their names have been changed upon request of my subjects. I also made a video for The Stewpot organization, which is expanding its operations to tackle …

A Qualitative Study Of The Effectiveness Of The University Of Nebraska–Lincoln's Journalism Program For Preparing Students For The Workplace, Sarah Anne Carter Rosenbaum

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

Journalism is changing at a rapid pace with every new technology and tool being released. Within the past year, Twitter’s Vine, Instagram video, and Google Glass are examples of technology that has emerged and journalists have incorporated them into their news coverage. Journalism education is faced with the task of figuring out how to best educate journalists so they are prepared for the current workplace. The balance is sought between teaching traditional journalism skills and knowledge and teaching the ability to use the latest technology. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications (UNL CoJMC) has made changes …

Freedom Of Information: What Can We Learn From Our Mother Country?, Whitney Evans

Journal of Undergraduate Research

American newspapers and journalists seem to be trending toward less investigative journalism, including stories that involve the use of freedom of information requests. This can be attributed to public demand for instant information, limited budgets and non-compliance of those who respond to freedom of information requests.

What Did You Learn In School Today? The Recursive Relationship Between Media Coverage Of Public Education And The Crafting Of Education Policy, Elisabeth Reinkordt Apr 2014

What Did You Learn In School Today? The Recursive Relationship Between Media Coverage Of Public Education And The Crafting Of Education Policy, Elisabeth Reinkordt

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

How does the public learn about issues in contemporary education policy? While changes in the economics of the media industry have shifted the mass media landscape, local communities continue to receive information about the state of their local schools primarily through local newspapers or television stations. It is arguably the most important task of a local paper to provide education coverage, as the schools are often the primary beneficiary of local tax revenues. This thesis reviews the literature surrounding the interface between education reporting and the crafting of education policy, examines the way in which education stories are framed by …

Journalism And Community: A Case Study Of The Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service (Nns), Herbert J. Lowe Jr.

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This is a case study of the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service (NNS) – a three-year-old, award-winning, online-only journalism source at www.milwaukeenns.org. A longtime journalist and communications professional leads a small team of part-time reporters, interns and volunteers as NNS seeks to provide professional and objective reporting about 17 low-income communities in America’s 30th largest city. This research examines the extent to which NNS has achieved its goals by analyzing and interpreting a significant sample of the 750-plus stories published on its website. It also focuses on the individual and shared experiences of the news service’s staff as it uses journalism …
