Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this research is to explore what factors of projects on Kickstarter, a popular crowdfunding website, are most influential in the decision to financially support a project. This study used triangulated research methods to explore these factors. An online survey of people who had financially contributed to one or more Kickstarter projects was conducted to better understand what aspects of projects backers found most important. A series of in-depth interviews with people who have financially supported one or more Kickstarter campaigns was also conducted to add perspective about the reasons people had for backing the campaigns. Hotel Bukovyna, Rebecca Ann Bosshart
Hotel Bukovyna, Rebecca Ann Bosshart
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This collection of short stories and first chapter of a novella take place in the historical area of Bukovyna, the beech tree land, partly located in Chernivetska region, western Ukraine. On the edge of it, or under it, or traveling to and from it, in contemporary time. I've been occupied with "the outsider," represented here, and where the seven stories reside, by the giant grande dame tourist hotel on Main Street, across from Shevchenko Park, in Chernivtsi, the region's city center. The occupants: the outsider looking in and around. Outsiders looking at other outsiders. An outsider being welcomed in. Most …
History Of Numeracy Education And Training For Print Journalists In England, Steven Harrison
History Of Numeracy Education And Training For Print Journalists In England, Steven Harrison
Numeracy
If the history of journalism education has been a footnote to accounts of the profession’s development, then the history of numeracy training for journalists must be considered a footnote to a footnote. Despite the universally acknowledged centrality of numbers to a clear understanding of the world, many journalism students and entrants are proudly number-phobic; it is even suggested that an aversion to maths is a key reason why some choose journalism as a career. This study traces the development of numeracy education for journalists in England. It is only with the incipient professionalisation of journalism from the mid-19th century that …

Now, It's Personal: Lovejoy Recipient Ellen Goodman Probes The Decaying State Of Political Debate, Stephen Collins
Colby Magazine
On November 12, the day of the Lovejoy convocation, Ellen Goodman filed her second column of the week before driving north to Waterville from Boston, where she is a columnist and associate editor at The Boston Globe. Despite her deadline, with more than 425 newspapers holding a hole for 750 words of her trademark wit and insight, and her immersion in a book project on women's friendships, Goodman arrived early- another trademark. Anna Karavangelos, her editor at the Washington Post Writers Group, says that in the more than 20 years that she has been in syndication, Goodman has never missed …

Press Definition And The Religion Analogy, Ronnell Andersen Jones
Press Definition And The Religion Analogy, Ronnell Andersen Jones
Faculty Scholarship
n a Harvard Law Review Forum response to Professor Sonja West's symposium article, "Press Exceptionalism," Professor RonNell Andersen Jones critiques Professor West's effort to define "the press" for purposes of Press Clause exceptions and addresses the weaknesses of Professor West's analogy to Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church & School v. EEOC in drawing these definitional lines. The response highlights distinctions between Press Clause and Religion Clause jurisprudence and urges a more functional approach to press definition.

Créativité Et Lecture En Langue Seconde : Propositions Pour La Lecture Des Textes Des Journaux Francophones Du Cameroun, Louis Martin Onguéné Essono
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
Nowadays, it is common to say that the French press in Africa greatly contributes to the lower level of French. If true, this assertion hides a much deeper problem that concerns the act of writing and the act of reading in a non-native language. The performance of newspaper, radio or television journalists show that these writers share the same competence and face the same difficulties as the entire French-speaking population who is compelled to transmit ideas and information in a second language they do not master, or just a bit. This paper aims at understanding the reasons why non-African readers …

How Can An Outdoor Company’S Public Relations Campaign Be Taken From The Local To National Level?, Devon Swanson
Journalism
The following study researches the most effective way for the outdoor startup company, Summit Outdoor Supply (S.O.S.), to take an already established local public relations campaign to the national level. This study will investigate what factors have helped other campaigns succeed for outdoor companies and what changes should be made to see S.O.S. reach that success. My goal for this project is to educate outdoor companies on how to use the most effective communication channels to reach their target audiences. The data, to support these recommendations, will come from my own experience working with a startup company paired with the …

Seeing The World Through The Lens Of News: Pasos Al Futuro Teaches Latino High Schoolers About Media Literacy Through Hands-On Journalism
DePaul Magazine
For budding journalists in Chicago, a novel DePaul program, Pasos al Futuro, exposes Latino high schoolers to media literacy through print and broadcast assignments, making understanding the news into a fun, hands-on experience. The Pasos program falls under the Latino Media & Communication program, which focuses on an awareness and appreciation of culture through Latino-focused courses in Public Relations and Advertising, Intercultural Communication, Journalism, and Media and Cinema Studies. Pasos itself has two components: a winter symposium that serves to introduce high school students to what journalists do, and a summer workshop that lets them learn about the business firsthand.
Manufacturing News: Exploring How Public Relations Content Is Presented As News From An Agenda-Setting Perspective, Katharine R. Gore
Manufacturing News: Exploring How Public Relations Content Is Presented As News From An Agenda-Setting Perspective, Katharine R. Gore
Journalism
This study, conducted in San Luis Obispo, California, analyzes and investigates the relationship between public relations professionals and journalists, the role of public relations in news and how often content developed by the public relations industry is later portrayed as news.
Public relations-developed content has a growing presence in news. This is due, in part to the fact that more people work in the public relations industry than do in journalism fields. There is also a symbiotic relationship between the two industries, which is confirmed by existing studies and scholarly texts.
An effort was made by the author to track …
Covering Caraway: Arkansas Reports On Hattie Caraway's Ascent To The United States Senate, Kristin Hodges
Covering Caraway: Arkansas Reports On Hattie Caraway's Ascent To The United States Senate, Kristin Hodges
Theses and Dissertations
When the governor of Arkansas appointed Hattie W. Caraway to the United States Senate in December 1931, she was only the second woman to sit in the chamber. Within the next year, Caraway would become the first woman to be elected and reelected to the Senate. This study analyzes the framing used by the Arkansas Democrat and the Arkansas Gazette from November 1931 to November 1932. Using double binds and the essentialism theory, this historical case study sought to identify how the news coverage described the forces, persons, and narratives that surrounded Caraway along with Caraway herself as she made …

Two Of A Kind: The Death And Life Of Patricia And Joan Miller, Monica Spees
Two Of A Kind: The Death And Life Of Patricia And Joan Miller, Monica Spees
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Twin sisters, Patricia and Joan Miller, create an unusual story that few people know. In their youth, they had fairly successful singing and performing careers, but they became reclusive as they got older and continued their lives only with each other. No one knew much about or heard much from them for about 40 years. Then police found them dead in their South Lake Tahoe, Calif., home in February 2012. Autopsy reports showed they died within hours of each other several weeks before police found them.
I intend to investigate the lives of the two sisters and their devotion to …
Entrepreneurial Journalism, Benjamin Bathke
Entrepreneurial Journalism, Benjamin Bathke
Student Scholarship
This paper attempts to illustrate how entrepreneurial journalism is and has been shaping media. In doing so, I will first give a brief overview of how journalism has been disrupted. In chapter two, I will show how journalism schools teach future journalists to be mediapreneurs. Next, I will focus on what it takes to build a media startup by giving examples of journalistic ventures. The chapter on fundraising focuses on ways how journopreneurs can obtain seed money for their startup. Next, this paper points out why students should adopt an entrepreneurial mindset; finally, it provides a list of successful media …

Researching The Real: Transforming The Science Fair Through Relevant And Authentic Research, Rosemary Mcbryan Davidson
Dissertations
This teacher research study documents the processes used to help students in an all-female, religious-based high school create science fair projects that are personally meaningful, scientifically sophisticated and up-to date in terms of science content. One-hundred sixteen young women in an honors chemistry class were introduced by their teacher to the methods used by science journalists when researching and crafting articles. The students then integrated these strategies into their science fair research through collaborative classroom activities designed by their teacher. Data collected during the process included audio and video tapes of classroom activities, student interviews, process work, finished projects, email …

Journalism Portfolio, William R. Brunelle

Multimedia Portfolio, Dan Clark
Journalism Program
For a journalist, there are only a few things that can land you a job. One of those things is having a professional portfolio. That’s why the Journalism Department has its students complete a professional portfolio as part of their Honors program. The Honors Program takes work students have already completed, then asks them to revise it, or even do it again. That way, when we leave the program, we’re ready to start sending out portfolios and resumés to potential employers. My portfolio is dominated by work that I wrote for a print medium because that’s what our program focuses …
