Barbara Clemenson writes on race relations in the Western Reserve area of Ohio in the mid-19th century through the experiences of Justin Holland, an African American musician who moved from Virginia in 1833 in pursuit of a better life and fair treatment. Clemson explores the role of the Cleveland in the Underground Railroad and its relatively progressive views of racial equality for the time.
