Moral Arguments For Water Justice And The Jackson Water Crisis, Benjamin Oliver
Moral Arguments For Water Justice And The Jackson Water Crisis, Benjamin Oliver
Honors Theses
Across the United States, residents of towns and cities find themselves increasingly concerned with their water supply. In 2022, attention shifted to Jackson, Mississippi, as over 150,000 residents of the majority Black capital city were left without clean water. In this thesis, I discuss this case study as well as cases in Baltimore, Maryland, Flint, Michigan, and Newark, New Jersey, finding that across these cities, there exist patterns of environmental racism and divestment in public resources. Crisis is soon to follow when these patterns compound with the climate change consequences of more intense weather and pollution. To discuss this pattern …

Judith Leyster: A Study Of Extraordinary Expression, Nicole J. Cardinale
Judith Leyster: A Study Of Extraordinary Expression, Nicole J. Cardinale
Theses and Dissertations
Judith Leyster’s innovative application of expression in her Self Portrait serves as the focus, whereby she is shown to blend conventional painting categories, preserve a sense of innocence, and confidently flaunt her skills. In turn, Leyster challenged the male-centric art market and stood apart from her artistic predecessors and contemporaries.

Wonders of Nature and Artifice
This book would have been created and read during the 1600’s, and throughout the European Enlightenment period. Written in Latin, it was made to be consumed by a wealthy and educated gentleman. This example was donated to the exhibit by Charles Emmons. It is covered in not-so-well-tooled vellum and gold leaf. All in all, it is in good condition with no marginalia, so while the vellum cover in the Renaissance is sometimes used on textbooks or other travel-appropriate tomes, this was probably only in a stationary location for a long period of time. Understanding Trait-Turnover Relationships : An Examination Of The Utility Of Holland's Congruence Theory And The Riasec Typology, Sarah Rebecca Strahan
Understanding Trait-Turnover Relationships : An Examination Of The Utility Of Holland's Congruence Theory And The Riasec Typology, Sarah Rebecca Strahan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The goal of the current study is to improve our understanding of the relationship between personality and employee turnover. Research is reviewed to demonstrate that after decades of research we still know very little about the role of personality in turnover. As a result, many researchers have called for new approaches to improve our understanding of the relationship between personality and turnover (Griffeth, Hom, & Gaertner, 2000; Hom & Griffeth, 1995; Russell, 2013). One approach that has received little attention is examining whether job context matters –that is, do the traits that predict employee turnover depend on the particular job. …

'Turning Hearts To Break Off The Yoke Of Oppression': The Travels And Sufferings Of Christopher Meidel, C. 1659-C. 1715, Richard Allen
Quaker Studies
This study of Christopher Meidel, a Norwegian Quaker writer imprisoned both in England and on the Continent for his beliefs and actions, explores the life of a convert to Quakerism and his missionary zeal in the early eighteenth century. From Meidel's quite tempestuous career we receive insights into the issues Friends faced in Augustan England in adapting to life in a country whose inter-church relations were largely governed by the 1689 Toleration Act, and its insistence that recipients of toleration were to respect the rights of other religionists. In England and Wales, although not censured by Friends, Meidel's activities were …

EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"This thesis explores and analyzes a first year ESL teacher's experience teaching at an all-girl's private school in Nishinomiya, Japan. Chapter 3 is divided into 15 sections that tell the teacher's story of living and teaching in Japan. This chapter includes description, dialogue, concurrent diary excerpts, photos, and theory. Chapter 4 analyzes these experiences and discusses the lessons the author learned while reflecting on her teaching in Japan. The main lesson learned was the importance of practicing cultural relativity--that is, opening one's mind and realizing that there is more than one way to live, teach, and see the world. Chapter …

Missouri V. Holland And Historical Textualism , Michael D. Ramsey
Missouri V. Holland And Historical Textualism , Michael D. Ramsey
Missouri Law Review
This essay does not undertake to say what the Holland rule should be today; instead, it advances a methodology to determine the Constitution's original meaning on the matter. Its approach, for want of a better phrase, I will call "historical textualism." In brief, historical textualism finds constitutional meaning in the specific words of the Constitution's text as they were situated and understood in the context in which they were written. Applying that approach, I find full support for Holland's conclusion in the Constitution's original meaning. That conclusion differs from other studies which have relied on "originalist" analysis to find subject …
Putting Missouri V. Holland On The Map, Edward T. Swaine
Putting Missouri V. Holland On The Map, Edward T. Swaine
Missouri Law Review
While I can think of no fitter setting for a symposium on this important topic, it must be admitted that geographically speaking, Missouri v. Holland disappoints. One thrills to the prospect of a divisive dispute between the State of Missouri and a province of the Netherlands - perhaps a sub-national compact on flood control gone sour? It quickly becomes apparent, though, that "Holland" is merely a lower-level federal official. And Missouri's particulars play a limited role in the case, as suggested by the fact that Kansas came to its side in the Supreme Court proceedings. Those who are not students …

Nature, Nurture, Mythology: A Cultural History Of Dutch Orangism During The First Stadholderless Era, 1650-1672, Greg Alan Beaman
LSU Master's Theses
Through its military and political service to the United Provinces of the Netherlands during the course of the Dutch struggle for independence from Spain, the house of Orange came to occupy a special place in Dutch culture. The image of the house of Orange in Dutch political culture followed a trajectory of cultural assimilation from the sixteenth century to the early eighteenth century, whereby Orange's continued service linked it inextricably to certain aspects of Dutch culture. Having granted the house of Orange legitimacy as political leaders, the Dutch people went about incorporating Orange into the heart of their cultural spirit. …
Erasmus And Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion
Erasmus And Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Although Erasmus (1467?-1536) lived in Switzerland for ten years, a longer period of time than in any country except his native Holland, and was, in fact, buried in Basel, scholars have written very little of substance on his lengthy connections with Switzerland and Swiss intellectuals and publishers. This is surprising because links between Erasmus and specific European countries have attracted a great deal of interest from leading Erasmus scholars. In his 1954 book Erasme et l 'Italie, Augustin Renaudet examined the important connections between Erasmus and Italian theologians and philosophers. Not only did Erasmus earn his doctorate in sacred theology …

Early Speculative Bubbles And Increases In The Supply Of Money, Douglas Edward French
Early Speculative Bubbles And Increases In The Supply Of Money, Douglas Edward French
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This paper examines three episodes in economic history that are commonly referred to as "speculative bubbles." The three bubbles analyzed are: Tulipmania, the Mississippi Bubble and the South Sea Bubble. The paper views these three events in a historical context emphasizing the monetary interventions particular to each episode; The Rational Expectations and Keynesian school's treatments of speculative bubbles are considered and rejected. The life and monetary theories of John Law are examined extensively, given his influence over the Mississippi and South Sea bubbles. Law is also indirectly connected to the Tulipmania, having been influenced by the operation of the Bank …
