Founding Legal Education In America, Paul D. Carrington
Founding Legal Education In America, Paul D. Carrington
Pepperdine Law Review
Thomas Jefferson is rightly recognized as the author of the Declaration of Independence, but less well known to the public is the role of his professional mentor and close friend George Wythe, who assisted in drafting the Declaration and served as both a law professor and Chancellor. Among Wythe's mentees were future President James Monroe, John Marshall, Henry Clay, and many others who played a role in shaping the Nation. This symposium paper explores the foundations of American legal education in the antebellum era, a short account of which confirms that the Founders understood that a republic needs experienced lawyers …

History, Organization And The Changing Culture Of Care: A Historical Analysis Of The Frontier Nursing Service, Edith West
Journal of International Women's Studies
Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the organizational shift at the Frontier Nursing Service from all female, nurse run and community-people focused to the corporate-consumer focus adopted everywhere else and the accompanying work environment issues this shift brought to the organization.
Background: Though it is not possible to isolate a single causative factor nursing’s history of cyclic ‘shortages’ as the problem is complex and interrelated, and there is no simple description in the available literature, there is agreement that the problem is having a negative impact on the current nursing practice environment, the retention of nurses, the …

The researcher is working on a project to establish a longitudinal data set that will look at the long term impact of sustainable development in the Nnindye community located in the Mpigi District in Uganda. Dr. Robert L. Bennett: Pioneer And Definer Of Modern Physiatry., John F. Ditunno, Jr, Richard E. Verville
Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers
Few physiatrists today would appreciate Dr. Robert L. Bennett’s contributions to our specialty, since he most commonly was associated with poliomyelitis, a cured disease for over a half century. Less are aware of the pioneering fusion of physical medicine in 1941 by Krusen’s first resident with the independent living environment of the Georgia Warm Spring Foundation (GWSF) created by a USA president. Bennett recognized polio/GWSF as the workshop and laboratory for showcasing the new specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR). He taught us that accurate muscle testing determined the plan of muscle reeducation, which led to functional training with …

Landscape, History And The Media: An Introduction, Christina E. Dando
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
Writing from Nebraska’s eastern edge, my mind’s eye drawn to the Platte River (west and south of me), I consider landscape, history, and the media. The Oto called the river “Nebraskier” which means flat or shallow, giving us the name of the state.1 Early accounts describe the Platte as “a mile wide and an inch deep” and “too thick to drink, too thin to plow”; Washington Irving described it as “the most magnificent and useless of rivers” (Allin 1982, 1). But to dismiss this river is to judge too quickly. As the river gains momentum, growing in size, it is …

Keeping Up With The Jonses: Making Sure Your History Is Just As Wrong As Everyone Else's, Brian Sawers
Keeping Up With The Jonses: Making Sure Your History Is Just As Wrong As Everyone Else's, Brian Sawers
Michigan Law Review First Impressions
Before Katz v. United States, a search under the Fourth Amendment required a trespass. If there was no trespass on one’s property, then there was no search. In Katz, a 1967 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court abandoned that approach, instead finding a search without a trespass based on the government’s invasion of a “reasonable expectation of privacy.” In Oliver v. United States, the Court found that trespass was not sufficient to create a search. It found no reasonable expectation of privacy in open fields, and thus no search, even though the defendant had erected “No Trespassing” signs around his property …
