Mémoire Et Silence Autour De La Guerre D’Algérie, Romain Chadaigne
Mémoire Et Silence Autour De La Guerre D’Algérie, Romain Chadaigne
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
The Algerian War has been surrounded with historical amnesia, which the figure of Charles de Gaulle perpetuated by the creation of a national myth that included the concepts of a civilizing mission' and the need to revive its 'glorious past. The question of torture during that period proved discordant with the republican ideals of France and the construction of the myth, thus awkwardly moving the country back and forth between silence and commemoration. The official line of the state, mostly motivated by silence, excluded accounts of torture and resulted in a postcolonial conflict between fragmented memories and a monolithic vision …
The Politics Of The "New North": Putting History And Geography At Stake In Arctic Futures, Andrew T. Stuhl
The Politics Of The "New North": Putting History And Geography At Stake In Arctic Futures, Andrew T. Stuhl
Faculty Journal Articles
References to a “New North” have snowballed across popular media in the past
10 years. By invoking the phrase, scientists, policy analysts, journalists and others
draw attention to the collision of global warming and global investment in
the Arctic today and project a variety of futures for the region and the planet.
While changes are apparent, the trope of a “New North” is not new. Discourses
that appraised unfamiliar situations at the top of the world have recurred
throughout the twentieth century. They have also accompanied attempts to
cajole, conquer, civilize, consume, conserve and capitalize upon the far north.

Goldfield Studies, Dawn Roe

The dialogue within this essay serves as a response to the series, Goldfield Studies, a work itself prompted by the history and landscape of this eponymous region of Victoria, Australia. The imagery produced takes the form of paired and multiple still photographs and a digital video sequence, displayed in triple-projection. The discussion is framed by the artist’s introduction, which defines the project as a critical consideration of cultural memory in relation to the opposing perspectives of indigenous and colonial settler narratives, pastoral landscape representations, folklore and myth. A collaborative dialogue between an artist and art historian who share common research …

When A Woman Campaigns, Emily Sloan
When A Woman Campaigns, Emily Sloan
Montana Law Review
This essay is a portion of a manuscript written by Montana's first female county attorney about her campaigns in the 1920s.
Foreword To When A Woman Campaigns: Emily Sloan's Races To Become Montana's First Female County Attorney, Bari R. Burke
Foreword To When A Woman Campaigns: Emily Sloan's Races To Become Montana's First Female County Attorney, Bari R. Burke
Montana Law Review
Emily Sloan is a remarkable figure in Montana history—a brave and resolute woman who practiced law for nearly twenty years and ran for public office seven times early in the twentieth century. She practiced law because that was the best of the escape routes open to her, and she obediently ran for office to boost her chances of succeeding at law. Although neither practicing law nor running for public office were her first choices, she committed herself wholeheartedly to those enterprises. She remained true to her calling as well: she never gave up her writing. At her death, she left …
Inhabited Landscapes: Nudes, Spirituality, And Coevality In The Landscape Paintings Of Armando Morales, Regina N. Emmer
Inhabited Landscapes: Nudes, Spirituality, And Coevality In The Landscape Paintings Of Armando Morales, Regina N. Emmer
Art & Art History ETDs
The Nicaraguan artist Armando Morales (1927-2011) has received considerable attention in recent scholarship for his work as a Magical Realist' painter--a label that has drawn attention to the 'dreamlike' and 'mythic' qualities of Morales' work while obscuring other qualities that are critical to understanding the artist and his oeuvre. Focusing on the landscape paintings that Armando Morales executed between 1985 and 2001, I remove Morales' work from the framework of magical realism within which it has been situated in order to more deeply probe themes that were central to the artist but which have been largely overlooked. More specifically, my …

Small Utah Towns, Christine Armbruster, Dr. James Swensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
While obtaining my Bachelor of Fine Art, I spent a lot of my time during those six years of school running away. First finding the need to get out of Provo, then Utah, and eventually America. It resulted in a lot of adventures, stories, and long drives. It was during these long drives that I consistently ran into each one of these small Utah towns, classically consisting of a corner store, a post office, and a child being pulled on a radio flyer. One after another after another. Slow down to 30 and watch the old signs from shops past …
Elements And Perspectives Of Educational Accountability In China And Denmark, Yihuan Zou, Palle Rasmussen
Elements And Perspectives Of Educational Accountability In China And Denmark, Yihuan Zou, Palle Rasmussen
Summer Workshop on the Comparative History of School Accountability
Different types of accountability systems may be found in education. For instance Anderson (2005) distinguishes between the following three main types, namely (1) detailed institutional regulation of educational activities and compliance to this; (2) acknowledgement of professional norms and adherence to these and (3) specification of expected results and evaluation of performance. For all three types a range of instruments to evaluate and to improve may be used. Accountability through performance has become more widespread in many contexts during recent years, but that does not mean that institutional regulation or even professional norms have disappeared. The three types coexist in …
Educating Wards Of The State: Gender-Based Vocational Curriculum In Jamaican Industrial Schools 1890 – 1940, Shani Roper
Educating Wards Of The State: Gender-Based Vocational Curriculum In Jamaican Industrial Schools 1890 – 1940, Shani Roper
Summer Workshop on the Comparative History of School Accountability
Throughout the late nineteenth century, the Jamaican colonial government along with several religious institutions established a small network of Industrial Schools as well as a Reformatory to house criminal, destitute, and displaced juveniles. Advocates of the industrial school system argued that the goal of an industrial school education was to create good colonial citizens. A gender- based vocational oriented curriculum was promoted on the grounds that such an education enforced values of self-sufficiency and thrift. This curriculum differentiated industrial schools from its counterparts in the general education system. The main goal of school administrators was to re-socialize children to become …

The Origins, Evolution, And Effects Of Test Based Accountability: North Carolina And The Nation, 1976-2009, Scott Baker
Summer Workshop on the Comparative History of School Accountability
This paper examines the origins, development, and effects of test based accountability between 1976 and 2009. Using evidence from North Carolina and other southern states to illuminate broader national developments, the paper focuses on three overlapping waves of test based accountability that began in southern states in the 1970s and spread throughout the United States in the decades that followed: 1) the minimum competency movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s, 2) the raising of high school graduation requirements and the implementation of more rigorous high school exit exams in the 1980s and 1990s, and 3) the adoption of …

Danish Primary Education Accountability – A Conceptual And Organizational Jour-Ney Of Accountability Practices In Danish History Of Education, Christian Ydesen, Karen Egedal Andreasen
Summer Workshop on the Comparative History of School Accountability
In this paper we focus on primary education accountability as a concept and as an organisational practice in Danish history of education. Contemporary policy studies of education often address questions of accountability, but the manifestations of school accountability differ significantly between different national settings. Furthermore, accountability measures and practices actually change the ways and means by which societies approach their cultural edifices in general and their educational systems in particular. In other words accountability measures and practices tend to have a disciplining effect on its surroundings. Hence there is a need to clarify the characteristics and traits connected with the …
