Murky Drops From Old Pump Rotten: The Old Pump, The “Purdue Woman,” And The Ancient Order Of The Dormitory Devils, Madison Heslop
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
At the southeast corner of Stone Hall on the campus of Purdue University stands the Old Pump, an oft-forgotten artifact of the University’s earliest days. As the pump fades further and further into obscurity, we lose the chance to construct a more full history of Purdue University and the lives of students and faculty long gone. Today, University tour guides and the Purdue Reamer Club memorialize this wooden facsimile of a water pump as a monument to “romance and friendship and the spirit of the Purdue Woman.” But what is the connection between women and the Old Pump, and is …

Life On The Dragon: The People, History, Scenery And Culture Of The Yangtze River, Danelle Marie Jones, Dr. Dana Scott Bourgerie
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Yangtze River region in China abounds in rich sources of ancient, as well as modern, Chinese history, literature, and culture. The River’s Three Gorges area overflows with some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery and invaluable historic sites. Throughout China’s history, particularly the Three Kingdoms period, significant events and dynastic governments emerged from the Yangtze River region. More recently in the early to mid 1900s, Chiang Kaishek and his Nationalist forces headquartered on the Yangtze River before the Communists pushed them to Taiwan. Peasants in the Three Gorges region epitomize China’s traditional culture, while residents of China’s larger cities …
The History Of The History: Re-Discovering Joseph Smith’S First Vision, Samuel Alonzo Dodge, Dr. Steven Harper
The History Of The History: Re-Discovering Joseph Smith’S First Vision, Samuel Alonzo Dodge, Dr. Steven Harper
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The ways in which Mormon historians approach history has changed greatly over time. For years the historical discussion of Mormonism‟s early periods tended to one of two camps, critics who sought to defame Joseph Smith and discredit the religious movement he launched, or Mormon supporters whose efforts to exonerate the Prophet often resulted in excessive glossing of the blemishes found in the Church‟s origins. However, towards the middle of the twentieth century the historical method began to change the way in historians approached the past. Rather than disregard the work done by opposing scholarship, both groups began using the works …

Readings On Islam In Ladakh: Local, Regional, And International Perspectives, John Bray
Readings On Islam In Ladakh: Local, Regional, And International Perspectives, John Bray
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
The influences of two major religions – Buddhism and Islam - are interwoven in Ladakhi history and contemporary society. However, by comparison with Buddhism, the study of Islam has often been neglected. This essay offers a reading guide as a basis for further study. It draws on a range of sources in Asian and European languages, including texts published locally in Ladakh, as well as academic monographs and articles in specialist international journals. The essay begins with a discussion of the key historical texts before looking more closely at Ladakh’s links with Central Asia, and the political and cultural impact …

Alfred Owre: Revisiting The Thought Of A Distinguished, Though Controversial, Early Twentieth-Century Dental Educator, David A. Nash
Alfred Owre: Revisiting The Thought Of A Distinguished, Though Controversial, Early Twentieth-Century Dental Educator, David A. Nash
Oral Health Science Faculty Publications
Many in dental education are unfamiliar with the professional life and thought of Dr. Alfred Owre, a distinguished though controversial dental educator in the early twentieth century. Owre served as dean of dentistry at both the University of Minnesota, 1905-27, and Columbia University, 1927-33. He was also a member of the Carnegie Foundation's commission that developed the report Dental Education in the United States and Canada, written by Dr. William J. Gies. Owre was a controversial leader due to his creative and original ideas that challenged dental education and the profession. His assessment and critique of the problems of dental …

Dressing Indian: Appropriation, Identity, And American Design, 1940-1968, Alison Rose Bazylinski
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis examines the ways the American fashion industry and fashion publications appropriated aspects of Indian cultures as marketing tools from 1940 to 1968 and the ways representations stereotypes created through fashion outlets denoted American and individual, rather than Native, identity. Representational stereotypes created at the turn of the twentieth century provided fashion merchandisers and sellers with a home-grown marketing scheme, while the development of an American fashion industry based on mass-produced, ready-to-wear sportswear led to nation-wide dissemination and use of "Indian" colors, patterns, and designs.
The Application Of Geographic Information Technology And Ground-Penetrating Radar In The Study Of The Evolution Of The Charles River Basin, Lars E. Anderas
The Application Of Geographic Information Technology And Ground-Penetrating Radar In The Study Of The Evolution Of The Charles River Basin, Lars E. Anderas
Graduate Masters Theses
A two-part study was conducted on the evolution of the shoreline of the Charles River basin on a city-wide scale as well as in finer detail in Magazine Beach Park, along the Cambridge shore of the river. Both parts of the study utilized geographic information technology (GIT) to integrate and analyze data from modern and historical sources, including maps, digital elevation models (DEMs), and orthographic and oblique photography. The city-scale portion of the study produced estimates of the total area of new land made within the study area since Boston's founding in 1630, 14.3 km2, of which 6.5 …
The Qur'anic Jesus: A Study Of Parallels With Non-Biblical Texts, Brian C. Bradford
The Qur'anic Jesus: A Study Of Parallels With Non-Biblical Texts, Brian C. Bradford
Dissertations
This study examines which texts and religious communities existed that could well have contributed to Muhammad’s understanding of Jesus. The most important finding is that the Qur’anic verses mentioning Jesus’ birth, certain miracles, and his crucifixion bear close resemblance to sectarian texts dating as early as the second century. Accordingly, the idea that such verses from the Qur’an involving Jesus are original productions of the seventh century should be reconsidered.
The research covers a series of significant topics that support these findings. They include theological conflicts in third century Arabia; the interaction between Christian monks, Saracens, Arabs, and Ishmaelites; sectarian …
