The history and development of forest range management in the southern USA are discussed, including influences of domestic livestock, wildlife, forestry, research, education and societies, Domestic cattle entered the USA in 1521; since then grazing the "piney woods" has been common. By the early 1930s, old growth timber was harvested from Texas to Florida and South Carolina. Fire control legislation helped reforestation to peak in 1959. This forced many cattlemen out of business owing to the fast-growing pines. Wildlife declined with colonisation but many populations were re­established after World War II. The excavations at Khirbat Burin exposed a large complex of medieval buildings (Strata I–II), as well as fills with mixed materials, mostly dating to the late Byzantine–Early Islamic periods (Stratum III). Three building phases were observed in the building complex of Stratum II (a–c). The complex was probably established during the Crusader period (mid-twelfth–early thirteenth centuries CE; Stratum IIa), before the area was conquered by Baybars I in 1265 CE. The ethnicity of the dwellers in not clear; they might have been either Muslims or Franks. The Strata IIb–c horizon dates to the Mamluk period (late thirteenth–fourteenth centuries CE). The …

The removal of soil from the vaults of the Crusader-period water reservoir at Moẓa revealed the installation’s plan and new data concerning its periods of use. The vaults were filled with gray soil, containing arch stones, pottery, glass, metal finds and animal bones, as well as chunks of lead and two copper coins from the Ayyubid period. This impressive Crusader-period reservoir was part of a larger structure from the same period. The pottery finds recovered from the fills provide evidence of continuous settlement here during the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods.

The archaeological strata from the 2010–2012 excavations at Magdala revealed finds from four main periods: Stratum IV—Hellenistic (late second–mid-first centuries BCE); Stratum III—Early Roman (mid-first century BCE–67 CE), which is further divided into Phase IIIa, Early Roman 1 (mid–late first century BCE), and Phase IIIb, Early Roman 2 (first century–67 CE); Stratum II—Middle–Late Roman (67–350 CE); and Stratum I—after c. 350 CE. The finds included architectural remains, as well as pottery (bowls, cooking bowls, kraters, cooking pots, jugs, jars and lamps), glass vessels (bowls, beakers, jars, bottles, jugs, wineglasses, windowpanes, spindle whorls, inlays, beads and stirring rods) and coins. The Byzantine Crusader conflict emerged due to the first Crusader campaign, and John II’s campaign included the Levant and Cilicia as an extension of the Byzantine campaigns on the areas belonging to the Byzantine state in Little Armenia and the Levant, especially Antioch. This campaign is studied in two ways: the Byzantine Crusader conflict and the Byzantine and Seljuk conflict, especially Danishmendids. John II’s campaign had several reasons. This study sheds light on the effect of mental illness on human social behavior from the perspective of the Arab-Islamic civilization physicians. The excavation exposed five primary phases of occupation, dating from the Roman to the Ottoman periods. In Phase 5, accumulations containing Roman- to Fatimid-period pottery were found. In Phase 4, a building was erected, a small part of which was excavated; twelfth-century pottery was found, as well as some residual sherds dating to the Umayyad, Abbasid and Fatimid periods. Phase 3 continued the use of the Phase 4 building, with the addition of walls and the raising of floors; finds on the floor included pottery vessels, glass vessels and a stone mortar, all dating to the thirteenth century. A Crusader-period bathhouse, which was exposed in the Montmusard suburb north of the Crusader city wall, is the first large verifiable Crusader-period structure to be found in this area. It was constructed directly upon remains of the Hellenistic city, with no intervening occupation levels. The bathhouse, only partially preserved in its western part, is of the hypocaust type, comprising a furnace, a storage and stoking room, a northern hot room and a larger eastern hot room. Its eastern part was very poorly preserved due to extensive stone robbing during the Ottoman period. The finds include fragmentary ceramic vessels, water pipes …

The research attempts to explain, from the perspective of Historical Studies of Revolutions, Maximilien Robespierre's hostility to France's state religion and how it led to the excesses of the Terror between 1792-1794. Robespierre appeared at the most radical phase of the Revolution, that began in 1792 and lasted up to 1794. He placed the belief in the Revolution as a priority to everything and justified faith in the cult of the Supreme Being as part of France's new Revolution. Robespierre is a controversial figure. Jazz Studies: interpretation, theory and education is a research project developed at Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, Polytechnic University of Lisbon, that involved the collaboration between the Jazz and Composition Departments. The focus of the project coordinated by Ricardo Pinheiro (with the collaboration of Carlos Caires and Carlos Marecos) was to rethink artistic research outputs in the field of jazz studies, questioning the hegemony of the current musicological paradigm (Cook, 2014; Pinheiro and Caires 2019; Pinheiro, Caires and Neto 2024), and to explore the broad academic, scientific and artistic scope that this field can provide.

Despite a recent shift in focus from content area literacy to disciplinary literacy in preservice teacher (PST) preparation programs, historical literacies training for prospective secondary social studies teachers has remained limited in the State of Connecticut. Historical literacies are defined as the discipline-specific reading and writing skills of historians and other social scientists. In this phenomenological study, I describe the lived experiences of several recent PST program graduates who are currently teaching secondary social studies in the State of Connecticut and report on the essence of this phenomenon. This chapter examines the state of apprenticeship programs in the United States and Virginia, assessing their role in the labor market. We begin with an overview of national apprenticeship policy, tracing major laws and initiatives that have influenced the system’s evolution and expansion. We then review trends in apprenticeship participation, highlighting the states that lead in registrations and program growth. The discussion pivots to Virginia, where we analyze current occupation, wage and demographic data, and regional apprenticeship examples that connect education and industry. Finally, we consider whether apprenticeships represent a sustainable and scalable solution to the Commonwealth’s workforce challenges.

It describes Knauss’s various performance rituals developed around a case study that traces the genealogy of a ringtone. The purpose of this historical study was to examine the planning, implementation, participants, and activities associated with the Youth Music Institute (YMI) held at the University of Wisconsin from July 7 to August 1, 1969. Organizers hoped this event would bridge the communication gap between society, educational institutions, and youth through a collaborative learning environment involving students, music educators, guidance counselors, and professional recording artists. Participants used the term “youth music” to encompass multiple genres that captured the interest of young people, including various forms of rock, blues, soul, country western, jazz, and ethnic styles. This essay explores how the history of interstate marriage recognition law was central to the Supreme Court’s recognition of constitutional protection for the right of same-sex couples to marry. Prior to the 1990s, there were essentially no laws on same-sex marriage in the United States. That changed in the 1990s, when the Hawaii Supreme Court issued a ruling in Baehr v. Lewin that made authorization of same-sex marriage seem inevitable in that state. The threat fueled the adoption first of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996 and then mini-DOMAs in most states. Those laws were broad and …

Cardiac arrest remains a leading cause of death worldwide and is a global health crisis. First described in the medical literature in the 18th century, modern cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with closed chest compressions has remained the standard of care since 1960. Despite exponential advances in basic science research and technological innovations, cardiac arrest survival remains a dismal 10%. The standard of care closed chest compressions provide only 20–30% of baseline cardiac output to the body. Have modern therapies plateaued in effectiveness?
