Research & Debate—Forms Of Military Strategy: Historical Parallels Between The American Confederacy And Imperial Japan, And A Way Forward, Robert C. Rubel

Two cases, almost eighty years apart, in which a weaker power—the Confederacy and imperial Japan—sought to achieve an end to the war before the United States could mobilize its material advantages and before the weaker side’s limited resources ran out provide useful insights into this western Pacific conundrum. Studying the failure of both challengers bears particular lessons for the United States in its potential conflict with China, in ways that studying our past victories against these adversaries cannot.

Fascist Italy’s campaign to secure and command oceanic sea-lanes in the period between 1935 and 1943 marks a noteworthy failure in interwar strategy. Such a glaring historical moment—particularly the failure to raise a suitable navy capable of achieving Italy’s geopolitical objects—demands further inquiry to uncover how and why this project fell far short of its projected aims.

Encounters with ruins are found throughout J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth tales. These ruins—or what Deborah Sabo (2007) terms ‘archaeological sites’—serve as symbols of the passage of time and the loss of past glory. Significantly, these archaeological sites are almost exclusively oriented toward the male heroic world; from ancient battlefields to statues commemorating fallen kings, burial mounds of legendary warriors, and the remnants of once-great halls built and ruled by men. Apart from Tol Morwen, mentioned only briefly in The Silmarillion, few sites across Middle-earth offer readers material clues about women’s history. This poster presents the Chesnutt Library at Fayetteville State University’s strategy to identify and transform underutilized space on a limited budget into high impact exhibition and display spaces. This project fostered new opportunities for collaboration between the library, faculty, and other university departments such as programs with the Office of Faculty Development. The result has not only been new partnerships for the library but increased engagement with faculty, students, and alumni while also highlighting the strategic value of the library, its services, and collections.

This article summarizes the scientific contributions of Professor Sachi Prasad Ray-Chaudhuri and his unwavering commitment to advancing research and teaching in mutagenesis and genetics in post-independence India, following his postgraduate training in the United Kingdom under the mentorship of Professor H. J. Muller. His contributions in basic mutagenesis, radiation protection, animal cytogenetics, and population genetics using a range of model and native species laid the foundation of scientific research in India in these contemporary fields. This played a pivotal role in advancing genetics and biological sciences in India at a time when scientific infrastructure and resources were limited. He also …
