One Island, One People, One Nation: Early Latin Evidence For This Motif In Ireland, Thomas O’Loughlin Nov 2015

One Island, One People, One Nation: Early Latin Evidence For This Motif In Ireland, Thomas O’Loughlin

The ITB Journal

That the island of Ireland is the home of the Irish, and consequently that ‘the nation’ and the territory of the island mutually define one another, has been one of the central assumptions of Irish nationalism. Just as an island is a single discrete entity -- the very icon for something well marked off from other things by ‘clear blue water’ -- so the people on it have been assumed to be a distinct group. More than just a collection of individuals or families, they have been assumed to form a ‘nation’ with a separate identity and destiny from their …

As a music education major, Kevin Clary (’15) of Gaffney, S.C., has had ample opportunities to perform and refine his own talent while learning how to teach future musicians. “I was in the GWU Symphonic Band and then joined the orchestra,” Clary said. “I was a member of the GWU trumpet ensemble, and during my time with that group we advanced to the semi-final round of the National Trumpet Competition twice. I was a member of the GWU Marching Band and served as the drum major. I was also a member of the GWU Jazz Collective, which was my favorite …

Drowning In White Whine, Melissa J. Lauro

SURGE

“What are some examples of white privilege?” my professor asked.

I felt an audible tension in the class as this was asked. This is a tricky subject, especially when you’re talking to a class full of mostly white, privileged people (myself included). [excerpt]

Shifting Gear: A Historical Analysis Of The Use Of Supportive Apparel In Powerlifting, Jan Todd, Dominic G. Morais, Ben Pollack, Terry Todd Nov 2015

Shifting Gear: A Historical Analysis Of The Use Of Supportive Apparel In Powerlifting, Jan Todd, Dominic G. Morais, Ben Pollack, Terry Todd

School of Business Faculty Research

In many ways, powerlifting is an odd sport. Competitors do not run or jump; no balls, bats, or rackets are used; and only one competitor "plays" on the lifting platform at a time. Judging can be highly subjective; three judges intently watch as the athlete lifts the loaded barbell nine separate times over the course of the competition. There is no instant replay and most lifts take less than ten seconds to perform. At the end of the lift, each judge throws a switch; if at least two white lights appear, the lift is good; if two or more lights …

History, Governmental Structure, And Politics: Defining The Scope Of Local Board Of Health Power, Pekham Pal Nov 2015

History, Governmental Structure, And Politics: Defining The Scope Of Local Board Of Health Power, Pekham Pal

Fordham Law Review

Local boards of health often issue regulations that have broad effects that surpass the borders of the city or county to which they apply. Promulgation of such rules by board of health members appointed by the executive branch implicates separation of powers concerns; because such regulations may so extensively burden a locality’s citizens, it may be more appropriate for elected officials to adopt these regulations. Indeed, local businesses or other interested parties often bring suit challenging local board of health actions. Courts apply different analytical methodologies to review these challenges, which often leads to incongruent local health agency discretion for …

The Experiment Must Continue: Medical Research And Ethics In East Africa, 1940–2014, Melissa Graboyes Nov 2015

The Experiment Must Continue: Medical Research And Ethics In East Africa, 1940–2014, Melissa Graboyes

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

The Experiment Must Continue is a beautifully articulated ethnographic history of medical experimentation in East Africa from 1940 through 2014. In it, Melissa Graboyes combines her training in public health and in history to treat her subject with the dual sensitivities of a medical ethicist and a fine historian. She breathes life into the fascinating histories of research on human subjects, elucidating the hopes of the interventionists and the experiences of the putative beneficiaries.

Historical case studies highlight failed attempts to eliminate tropical diseases, while modern examples delve into ongoing malaria and HIV/AIDS research. Collectively, these show how East Africans …
