Sister Justina Segale, S.C. And The Work Of The Santa Maria Settlement House, Judith Metz S.C. Ph.D.
Sister Justina Segale, S.C. And The Work Of The Santa Maria Settlement House, Judith Metz S.C. Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
In 1897, Sisters of Charity and siblings Justina and Blandina Segale began planning what became known as the Santa Maria Educational and Industrial Home. The institution began with general and religious education among poor Italian immigrants in Cincinnati. Justina Segale was particularly concerned with religious instruction among the children, and she strove to keep them out of Protestant schools. Santa Maria’s many other works are profiled, with special attention given to their planning and the support they received from the diocese, other religious communities, and the laity. The role of the sisters’ spirituality in the motivation for their work is …
Sister Justina Segale And The New Woman: Tradition And Change In The Progressive Era, M. Christine Anderson Ph.D.
Sister Justina Segale And The New Woman: Tradition And Change In The Progressive Era, M. Christine Anderson Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
M. Christine Anderson discusses the usefulness of Justina Segale’s journal as a tool to teach undergraduates about women’s changing roles in the early twentieth century. Examples from the journal are cited. Similarities and differences between Segale and the “new woman” are discussed. While women’s entrance into the professions of teaching, nursing, and social work is often held up as a new development of the Progressive era, Catholic women religious had long been trained for these occupations. In her social service and educational capacities, Segale illustrates the complexity of women’s roles in this era. Anderson contrasts Segale’s experience and perspective working …

Beneath The Mulberry Tree: Sarah Edmonds And Women In Memory, Anika N. Jensen
Beneath The Mulberry Tree: Sarah Edmonds And Women In Memory, Anika N. Jensen
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
In her memoir Nurse and Spy in the Union Army, Sarah Emma Edmonds, a woman fighting in the Union Army disguised as a man, employed florid diction and a subtle romantic flare to illustrate an emotional and confounding moment in the aftermath of the Battle of Antietam: discovering another woman undercover. Edmonds writes of the “pale, sweet face of a youthful soldier,” of a boy trembling from blood loss who, she knew, had only a few more minutes on earth. He tasted his last sip of water, and with his remaining breaths the soldier beckoned Edmonds closer and uttered a …

Summer 2016: Recreating Green Knight Football History – On Lambeau Field Turf, St. Norbert College
St. Norbert College Magazine 2013-2018
On Saturday, Sept. 3, at 2:30 p.m. the Wisconsin Badgers faced the Louisiana State University Tigers in the Carmex Lambeau Field College Football Classic. But this long-anticipated event was not the first college game ever played at Lambeau Field. In the 1980s, St. Norbert College twice hosted Fordham University at Lambeau for the Vince Lombardi Memorial Classic – a series initiated by Coach Larry Van Alstine ’56. And it was a spur-of-the-moment souvenir photo snapped after the Nov. 19, 1983 game that led to a much more recent Lambeau reunion for five former Green – making a new and lasting …

Ten Weeks At Manassas, Kevin P. Lavery
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
My heart was pounding, my breath was shallow, and I wanted nothing more than to begin so that it would all be over sooner.
No, I was not preparing to jump from a plane. Nothing so dramatic. I was preparing myself to give a tour of Henry Hill detailing the position’s salient importance in the First Battle of Manassas.

Attitudes About Work And Time In Los Angeles, 1769-1880, Tyler D. Lachman Mr.
Theses
This thesis argues that the industrious Californio people continued to prosper in Los Angeles after statehood in 1850. Certain historians have emphasized the hardworking Californio culture at various points in Los Angeles history. But no one has defended their overall work ethic. Thus, this thesis goes farther than other historians in discrediting the notion that Californio Angelinos died out quickly because they could not sustain success under American leadership.
