From Grace To Grids: Rethinking Due Process Protections For Parole., Kimberly A. Thomas, Paul D. Reingold May 2017

From Grace To Grids: Rethinking Due Process Protections For Parole., Kimberly A. Thomas, Paul D. Reingold

Articles

Current due process law gives little protection to prisoners at the point of parole, even though the parole decision, like sentencing, determines whether or not a person will serve more time or will go free. The doctrine regarding parole, which developed mostly in the late 1970s, was based on a judicial understanding of parole as an experimental, subjective, and largely standardless art—rooted in assessing the individual “character” of the potential parolee. In this Article we examine the foundations of the doctrine, and conclude that the due process inquiry at the point of parole should take into account the stark changes …

The Efforts Of Trade: Commodities, World Markets, And Early American Labor, Donovan P. Fifield May 2017

The Efforts Of Trade: Commodities, World Markets, And Early American Labor, Donovan P. Fifield

Honors Scholar Theses

In early America, commodities played a critical role in the development of the structure of labor. Labor involved the inputs, including both physical work and organizational efforts, contributed by actors within the markets for these commodities. The goods at the center of these markets can be viewed as both the primary motivator for these inputs and the common thread that tied them together globally. This period was unique in that chains of interaction began to form not just in select locations, but internationally. The result was competition between nations and between businesses. This created a drive that manifested itself from …

Glhf: A Brief Overview Of Gaming Cafes, John Sun

ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies

My paper is on the history of internet and gaming cafes, focusing on how they are seen today, the problems they face and some potential solutions. Although my focus is on gaming cafes in America, because they are so popular overseas in Asian countries (such as South Korea, China, and Japan), they inevitably come up more often in my paper and presentation.

Innovation In Intelligence: An Analysis Of U.S. Marine Corps Intelligence Modernization During The Occupation Of Haiti, 1915-1934, Laurence M. Nelson Iii

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Increasing modernization in military technology and methodology occurred during the beginning of the twentieth century. These changes had a direct effect on how U.S. Marines practiced military intelligence during the occupation of Haiti from 1915- 1934. The use of military intelligence had an impact on the outcome on the occupation but was not the only factor that contributed to U.S. military victories. My thesis explains that the improvement of intelligence methods used by Marines in Haiti occurred as a result of outside influence, changing circumstance in Haiti, and individual agency. Major failures had occurred that allowed resistance to grow unchecked …

The Demilitarization Of Costa Rica, Patrick Buscone Apr 2017

The Demilitarization Of Costa Rica, Patrick Buscone

Holy Cross Undergraduate Academic Conference

Costa Rica is one of the few developed countries in the world to be completely demilitarized. In the first chapter, this thesis explores why the country decided to demilitarize and how effective their demilitarization has been. Further statistical analysis is applied in Chapter 2 to determine the effect military spending has on growth in Latin America. With Costa Rica experiencing great stability and growth following their demilitarization and the statistical analysis showing military spending to have a negative impact on growth in Latin America, the third and final chapter explores other Latin American countries that could benefit from demilitarization.

Surgery As A Science: The Intellectual And Practical Evolution Of European Surgery From The 16th To The 18th Century, Molly Nebiolo Apr 2017

Surgery As A Science: The Intellectual And Practical Evolution Of European Surgery From The 16th To The 18th Century, Molly Nebiolo

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

This article explores the transition of surgery from a collection of skills and techniques used on the battlefield to its acceptance as a medical profession. Opinion was shaped through advances in technology, use of anesthesia, and surgical practices. This success prompted a shift in public confidence facilitated by the Church’s funding of public autopsies led by surgeons. Once the public understood the greater effectiveness of surgeons, their status changed from butcher to doctor by the early 18th century. Previous research has focused on the technological advances behind the professionalization of surgery and the sociological change in beliefs, but this article …

Movies, Memory, And Millennials: How Modern Films Have Influenced The Holocaust, Audrey M. Hehman

Undergraduate Theses

This thesis analyzes how modern Holocaust films affect what millennials know and learn about the Holocaust. In a world that is so technology driven, more and more millennials are turning to alternative methods of learning about a topic - this includes watching films. American Prometheus: Carnegie’s Captain, Bill Jones presents a compelling historical memoir of the illustrious life of rebellious steel genius and inventor, Captain Bill Jones.

Hero of the Civil War and Johnstown Flood, Captain Bill Jones built and supervised the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, which in its first five years advanced to the rank of the world’s most productive and profitable steel mill. Uncovering The Truth: Women Spies Of The Civil War, Olivia Traina (Class Of 2017) Apr 2017

Uncovering The Truth: Women Spies Of The Civil War, Olivia Traina (Class Of 2017)

History Undergraduate Publications

The American Civil War is one of the most impactful events in our nation’s history. There is so much that can be analyzed within this one event, from the years leading into the war, during the war, and Reconstruction. Most historians and school history textbooks only focus on the male and battle aspects of the war. While these two topics make up a majority of Civil War history, there is another huge component that played a prominent role, and that is the women spies.

Women spies played a vital role in the Civil War. Rose O’Neal Greenhow, Belle Boyd, Sarah …

Agriculture, Climate, And Capitalist World-Economy: Rethinking The Global Crisis, Dayne Feehan Apr 2017

Agriculture, Climate, And Capitalist World-Economy: Rethinking The Global Crisis, Dayne Feehan

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

Our relationship with nature has been constantly changing throughout modern history. The ways in which we interact with extra-human natures in order to grow food and build empires has radically and successively transformed since the sixteenth century. With these transformations, the perception of our interactions with extra-human natures has changed as well. The modern perception of Humans versus Nature is challenged with a new ideological framework. This paper introduces the world-ecological framework, which recognizes the relationships of human and extra-human natures as deeply intertwined and dialectical histories. The world-ecological framework is contrasted with the modernist ontology in the debate of …

The Aesthetics Of Hysteria In Feminine Melodrama; On Fang Fang's Water Under Time (2008), Li Guo Apr 2017

The Aesthetics Of Hysteria In Feminine Melodrama; On Fang Fang's Water Under Time (2008), Li Guo

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Water under Time, the novel by the reputed Chinese fiction writer Fang Fang, appropriates and reconstructs the conventions of the hysteric narrative as an affective form of feminine history telling and writing. The novel, which accounts Hankou city’s past through the heroine’s life story, illustrates how feminine hysteria provides a gendered lens of reconstructed historical authenticity via the panorama of China’s early Republican period, the anti‐Japanese War, and the present new millennium. Transcending the official historical accounts, Fang Fang’s narrative features women’s innovative reconfiguration of contesting historical discourses about the city, the community, and the nation. This study of Water …

Pence Teaches, Studies The History Of Germany., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

“I’m really happy to talk about history because

I find it a very exciting thing that helps us to understand

the present and figure out how to analyze all

the different things around us.” That is the way Dr.

Katherine Pence explains why studying history is

important beyond the stereotype of being a subject

about dates and names.

“It’s good to have few dates in mind so you can

figure out causes and effects and what comes before

and after a certain date, such as the end of World

War II in 1945. The world changed dramatically after

that date,” …

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Unequal Playing Time

In his book The American College Town, Blake Gumprecht claims one of the defining features of college towns is that they are more progressive, liberal-minded, and socially-blended spaces. However, this is not the type of college town that appears in Marshall University’s collection of archives. Throughout the years, many groups of students were often overlooked due to minority population status. This presentation examines the lack of recognition for one such group, in particular, women’s athletics during the 1920’s. Student yearbooks published between 1920 and 1930 were analyzed for content featuring men versus women’s athletics.

At the …

Progressing Towards The Future, Joe L. Gates Mr Apr 2017

Progressing Towards The Future, Joe L. Gates Mr

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

In the book, The American College Town, author Blake Gumprechet claims that college towns are often seen as spaces that are more progressive and open-minded than the surrounding areas. However, a look through the Marshall University Archives reveals that this wasn't always the case for Huntington's campus. This presentation discusses the ways that representations and discussions of minority student groups have changed over the course of Marshall’s history. By looking at a collection of articles published in The Parthenon during the 1960’s, my paper is able to discuss some of Marshall's past.

This paper follows The Parthenon storyline of the …

Miss Moore Thought Otherwise: How Anne Carroll Moore Created Libraries For Children, Aylea Stephens

Children's Book and Media Review

When most people thought girls should stay inside and do quiet activities, Annie Carroll Moore thought otherwise. She liked to play outside and read stories. Children weren’t allowed in libraries, and most people thought reading wasn’t important for girls. When she was older and both her parents died from the flu, she moved to Brooklyn, New York, when she found out that libraries were starting to hire female librarians. As a librarian, she encouraged children to check out books and encouraged other librarians to let children read the books. She wrote book reviews and helped people find good books for …
