Shostakovich’S Fourth And Fifth Symphonies: A Comparative Analysis, Payden Taylor
Shostakovich’S Fourth And Fifth Symphonies: A Comparative Analysis, Payden Taylor
Tenor of Our Times
The Fourth and Fifth Symphonies of Dmitri Shostakovich were written less than two years apart, but bear two incredibly different structures and tonal palettes. The former was shelved for decades and the latter was released to worldwide praise. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the unique circumstances that led to the two disparate fates of these pieces of music. It will investigate the political climate of the Soviet Union in the 1930s and the musical influences which affected Shostakovich and his oeuvre, speculating the purposes behind Shostakovich's change in approach between symphonies over the course of 1936 and …

The Presbyterian Enlightenment: The Confluence Of Evangelical And Enlightenment Thought In British America, Brandon S. Durbin
The Presbyterian Enlightenment: The Confluence Of Evangelical And Enlightenment Thought In British America, Brandon S. Durbin
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Eighteenth-Century British American Presbyterian ministers incorporated covenantal theology, ideas from the Scottish Enlightenment, and resistance theory in their sermons. The sermons of Presbyterian ministers strongly indicate the intermixing of enlightenment and evangelical ideas. Congregants heard and read these sermons, spreading these ideas to the average colonist. This combination helps explain why American Presbyterians were so apt to resist British rule during the American Revolution. Protestant covenantal theology, derived from Protestant reformers like John Calvin and John Knox, emphasized virtue and duty. This covenant affected both the people and their rulers. When rulers failed to uphold their covenant with God, the …

Early Republican Motherhood Through Eliza Pinckney, Taylor V. Wilkins
Early Republican Motherhood Through Eliza Pinckney, Taylor V. Wilkins
Tenor of Our Times
Elizabeth Lucas Pinckney was the exception to many social norms in her day and has been praised over the decades for her life work. She pioneered planting techniques and natural remedies, as well as kept a letter book that detailed her life, and raised children that also played key roles in changing their world. While some might contend that Pinckney was not a Republican Mother because she was not active during the post-revolutionary war time, that does not discredit her life from being characterized by the term. Rather, Pinckney was an early example of a Republican mother because of her …

Handing Down History On The Beaches Of Normandy, Shawn Fisher Ph.D.
Tenor of Our Times
Assistant professor of history Dr. Shawn Fisher wrote a travel report on his time in Europe during the spring 2017 semester. He spent three months in Italy with the Harding University in Florence program. His visit to the beaches of Normandy led to reflections on the history of World War II and how the lessons of sacrifice learned there should be passed down to younger generations.

“The Time Is Always Now:” James Baldwin In Trump’S America, Chase Stowell
“The Time Is Always Now:” James Baldwin In Trump’S America, Chase Stowell
Senior Theses
Gone is the optimism regarding race relations that dominated the early years of Obama’s presidency. Trump’s meteoric rise has given Americans pause, and in this time of potential reflection, it is important to re-examine James Baldwin. This essay analyzes Baldwin’s understanding of race from the inception of racism in America until its theoretical end, combining Baldwin’s novels and essays to propose practices that will help America move beyond the racial problem that has haunted its history. James Baldwin’s demand of individual reflection upon one’s system of reality necessitates the end of political demonology, as well as a reframing of rhetoric …

The Rise-And-Fall Of Leading International Financial Centers: Factors And Application, Adam Church
Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review
This Note will look at the role of four broad factors that correspond with the rise-and-fall cycles among leading international financial centers. The four factors are: trust in a financial center’s abilities; the central banking and monetary policy systems of the center’s home nation; the home nation’s landscape of financial policy and regulation; and the overall stability of the financial center itself. First, this Note will undertake a broad historical survey of the shifts in prominence from Amsterdam to London, from London to New York, and from New York back to London to define the scope of these factors through …

Music As Influence: How Has Society Been Shaped By Musical Genres Throughout History?, Cody Poulin
Music As Influence: How Has Society Been Shaped By Musical Genres Throughout History?, Cody Poulin
Senior Honors Projects
Musical genres have been an integral part in all societies, ancient and contemporary. As time has progressed, so too have the styles and methods of making and consuming music. Modern music presents us with an enormous amount of variety, allowing us to choose which genres we prefer based on our own ideologies and preferences. In order to understand how these genres came to be, one must look at the context through which they were formed. The context includes a variety of factors, such as time period, cultural and social factors, familial influence, and the geographical location where the music emerged. …
Exploring The History And Trends Of Accounting In Canada And The United States, Annie Songeun Lee
Exploring The History And Trends Of Accounting In Canada And The United States, Annie Songeun Lee
Accounting
During my years at University at Albany, I have studied accounting that is based on the United States regulation, GAAP. As I am from British Columbia, Canada, that uses a different standard, IFRS, I wanted to take this opportunity to research the differences between GAAP and IFRS. The purpose of this research paper is to explore the history of accounting in both countries and compare their differences in education, license requirements, fraud scandals, and their solutions. I will also examine the new revenue recognition, the convergence of IFRS and GAAP, and some of the professionals’ opinions on the trend of …
Shadows Of Empire: The Mughal And British Colonial Heritage Of Lahore, Naeem U. Din
Shadows Of Empire: The Mughal And British Colonial Heritage Of Lahore, Naeem U. Din
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Pakistani city of Lahore is the capital of the Punjab province. The city itself has existed for over a thousand years. In 1947 the British rule in the Indian subcontinent ended, resulting in the partition of British India into the modern states of India and Pakistan. At the time the Punjab province was also partitioned, with the western half (including Lahore) going to Pakistan and the eastern half being awarded to India. Prior to partition, Lahore served as an important administrative and commercial center under the Mughal Empire (1526–1799), the Sikh Empire (1799–1849), the British East India Company (1849–1858), …
The Other At War: Performing The Spanish-Cuban-American War On U.S. And Cuban Stages, Juan R. Recondo
The Other At War: Performing The Spanish-Cuban-American War On U.S. And Cuban Stages, Juan R. Recondo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Spanish-Cuban-American War, declared by the United States on April 25, 1898, marks a colonial shift in the history of the Caribbean and solidified the expansionist thrust of the United States outside national borders. Theatres in turn-of-the-century New York, which at this point was one of the theatrical centers of the nation, debated for audiences the imperialist character of the U.S. The Cuban struggle and the resulting Spanish-Cuban-American War permeated U.S. drama, thereby portraying a Caribbean in need of salvation by the military intervention of the United States. New York stages of the time became locations where various cultural representations …

The Art Of Cymbal Making, Marcus Gazaway
The Art Of Cymbal Making, Marcus Gazaway
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The purpose of my research paper was to study, analyze and compare cymbal-making processes by popular and independent cymbal manufacturers to understand the individual elements that make cymbals sound the way they do. I researched the history of cymbals, their alloy construct, their physical sound design, and their frequency output.
My investigation of individual cymbals began with understanding how each cymbal was made, what it consisted of, and how those factors applied to the sound the cymbal made when a drumstick struck it. I measured the frequency output of five different cymbals by recording each cymbal as it was struck …
"Do It Yourself": Origins Of Bay Area Hip-Hop, Alexandra Schumacher
"Do It Yourself": Origins Of Bay Area Hip-Hop, Alexandra Schumacher
Senior Theses
At the present, there is minimal scholarly research on the origin story of Bay Area hip-hop to compliment the various articles and books authored by hip-hop experts and artists. The consensus that emerges from the existing secondary literature is that hip-hop originated on the East Coast and later emerged on the West Coast with its own unique style. These accounts, while well documented, only include a few mainstream figures and styles related to the Los Angeles hip-hop scene. Looking past mainstream hip-hop, this study pieces together the origins of Bay Area hip-hop through both mainstream and underground key figures of …

The American Impact On The Evolution Of The Japanese Women’S Rights Movement, Caitlin Tripp
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this research is to explore the impact of America’s influence on Japanese women’s efforts to obtain equal rights. America’s role in various Japanese women’s rights groups and movements has been the subject of essays and theses in the past, yet the topic is generally centered specifically on the period during the American occupation following World War II in 1945. This paper aims to take a broader look at Japanese Women’s Rights efforts before and after the war to garner a better understanding of the ways in which the American influence aided in the development of the movement. …

In this paper, I detail my current philosophies on the performance of magic and the reasons why I made certain decisions regarding the structure of the show and the routines I performed. In addition to this, I also discuss adaptations that I have made to these routines since the performance. The analysis is based entirely on …
Benefits Of Veterans’ Oral History On Gifted Students, Katelyn Watkins
Benefits Of Veterans’ Oral History On Gifted Students, Katelyn Watkins
Honors Theses
To combat boredom and negative sentiments, all students need to be provided with engaging experiences in history. This is especially the case with gifted students. One strategy that has proven beneficial to students is oral history, which brings people who have lived through history into the classroom. Research supports the use of oral history in the classroom; however, research on the benefits of veterans’ oral histories on gifted students in particular is scarce. This study describes research on how a veteran’s oral history might benefit gifted students. Qualitative research methods consisting of case study and narrative research were used. The …

How Collective Memories And Divergent Historical Perceptions Influences Sino-Japanese Relations, Kenneth Chevreaux
How Collective Memories And Divergent Historical Perceptions Influences Sino-Japanese Relations, Kenneth Chevreaux
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This project is looking to provide a comprehensive study of how history has influenced and structured modern Sino-Japanese relations.China and Japan are two of the East Asian powerhouses with economies that account for a majority of the region’s economic activity. They are two of the most influential countries within the East Asian region and arguably the world, but Sino-Japanese relations have a history of tension and conflict that spans back centuries. It is my intention with this research project to develop a multi-perspective analysis of the structure of Sino-Japanese relations with a basis in constructivist theory. This research can assist …
