Deborah Noyes explores the world's differing views and practices relating to our demise in this encyclopedia on death. Noyes also looks at the differing emotions people feel and what various societies deem acceptable for people to do in relation to death. Common forms of burial, grief, and remembrance highlight the popular ways to deal with the passing of a loved one and how people deal with death. Cultural ideas of the afterlife show how people worldwide view passing on and what happens after death.

Engineering The Colosseum, Katherine Morrell
Engineering The Colosseum, Katherine Morrell
Children's Book and Media Review
Welcome to the Flavian amphitheater or better known as today, the Colosseum. This structure is rich in history, but this book’s focus is mostly on its architecture. Construction started in 72 AD under the head of the Roman Empire, Vespasian. Vespasian ripped out the previous emperor, Nero’s, pleasure palace to make a place of games for the people. Still standing today, ancient texts claim that the Colosseum could comfortably fit 87,000 people and often hosted animal duels, execution of prisoners, and gladiator fights. The building is made mostly of limestone and cement and the weight is distributed by rows and …

Adam Christian Thebesius' Channels Into The Human Heart: The Thebesian Veins And The Thebesian Valve, Magdalena Mazurak, Jacek Kusa
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
In 1708, Adam Christian Thebesius, a 22-year-old student at Leiden University, presented his graduate thesis, Disputatio medica inauguralis de circulo sanguinis in corde. More than a doctoral dissertation, this groundbreaking work opened new channels into the study of the human coronary venous system. Thebesius' theory about the vascular communication between the coronary arteries and the chambers of the heart helped to advance understanding of hemodynamic principles and to clarify the physiologic pathways of the coronary circulation. The following article—the third in a trilogy about Lower Silesian scientists—provides an overview of the life story and achievements of this Silesian physician …

"It's More Than Just Religion:" Teaching History In A Catholic School, Colleen Fitzpatrick
"It's More Than Just Religion:" Teaching History In A Catholic School, Colleen Fitzpatrick
Journal of Catholic Education
This study explores how one teacher, Rebecca, makes sense of teaching history in a Catholic school. This Catholic school had a clear religious mission and did not have required curriculum or high-stakes tests. Yet, findings indicate that Rebecca did not attend to the religious mission in her teaching and, in absence of curricula or high-stakes tests, she relied heavily on the textbook. Findings demonstrate the need for a greater understanding of what curricular content is being taught and learned in Catholic elementary and secondary schools and how it aligns with the mission and purpose of Catholic schools.

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
Gaming, the organisation of Banker’s games for profit, in Britain prior to the Second World War has largely been ignored by academics and historians. There has been an assumption that gaming was conducted at such a small scale that it was either not worthy of research, or, that there was not enough evidence to support specific analysis.
This paper will attempt to dispel the above academic myth utilising contemporary press coverage and archive material which will illustrate a vibrant, but illegal gaming industry. In fact, gaming during this period formulated in the minds of the authorities the need for substantial …
