September 1st 1890
Mr. John Muir,
My Dear Sir,
In the "Century" for August you speak of hogs and cattle and the plow and ax rapidly destroying the Yosemite Valley.
I am anxious to secure evidence and information concerning the Valley, and know of no better source than yourself. Will you kindly let me know when you saw hogs roaming at large in the Valley, and whether the ax has been used there to clear fields for the plow, and by …

Dear Louie
The answer to my Victoria telegram was a grand & much needed relief. The letter with the terrible news reached me by the Queen on her trip preceding this one but I did not see it until she sailed, for when yours & the childrens letters were handed me the cabin was full of excited visitors all talking & I ran through them hastily without noticing the dreadful news. As soon as the Queen sailed I took a quick reading of them all & when I discovered Helens condition I varily regretted …

Welcome to your adopted country! Supposing that you will arrive at home about the time this letter reaches California, I send herewith our check in payment for your two articles, including also the use of your sketches.
Very sincerely yours,

Dear Mr. Johnson:
We had hoped to welcome home our Alaska wanderer this week, but now letters and sketches have come instead from Glacier Bay. Mr. Muir writes that he feels well and strong, better than any time since he left the high Sierras though he has made a terribly hard exploration of the glacier heights and the icy wilderness of mountain peaks near the Muir Glacier. Although there were many days of fog and fierce storms after his arrival, he has had also
many glorious views in fine, brilliant sunshine, of that wonderful highland …

Dear John,
We expect that the steamer Queen due at Victoria in 2 or 3 days will bring you on the way home, so I write but a few lines, for the possibility of your coming later, to tell you that all goes well here. Little Helen has quite recovered, and is as bright and playful as ever. We all feel much better, but we long to hear of your safe arrival at Victoria. I dare not risk traveling with Helen, and I can not leave her,
otherwise the children and …

I am exceedingly unwilling to get him into trouble of any kind. The "grab," however, is an especially greedy one. Leonard I do not blame, for he is a poor man, struggling to support a wasteful half-breed family. If we stop this grab it will show the Washburns more than anything else that would be done just now that we mean business and can effectively fight the monopoly. I think that the reason that Leonard was not sent to "prove up" on June 16 was because I had already told J. J. Cook, (Stoneware House,) and who is a …

My beloved husband,
Again three more blessed letters have come to comfort us and rejoice our hearts with thought of your safe return. Your note of July 11 came two days ago, and oh the shadow of it. John, John, do not go any more where those terrible wolves range and howl. Do you have an ice-pick always ready? but that could be but a slight staff against their cruel strength.

We are expecting to see you next week on the steamer due in San Francisco August 5, so the children are not writing letters for this steamer. Dear Mrs. Muir:-
If I understand rightly, Mr. Muir will not be back until about the 1st of September. I may therefore be likely to reach him through you with this note, which I should be obliged if you would forward.
"The Century" desires to avail itself of the results of his present trip to Alaska, and to that end I have obtained authorization from Mr. Gilder for a proposal for one or two articles on the subject, as soon as they can be conveniently prepared. I do not know whether Mr. …

Still no word nor message from Glacier Bay: and Alaska seems yet more mist-shrouded and far away than ever. Our papers have not yet given any report of the steamer Queen's arrival at Victoria, though the “Pueble" reached San Francisco on Thursday but no mention has been made of news from the North, so I hope the delay has been for good reasons, not because of storms. Yesterday, a hot norther blew here, 92 degree, but most of the time our winds have been too cold. Many of the grape vines had …
