Dear Sir:
In looking over a volume of last year's "Century" Magazine I came upon an article headed John Muir, and underneath the name was his portrait. I remarked to myself, Why that looks very much like my old schoolmate at theWisconsin State University, John Muir. And hastily running over the articleI found to my astonishment that my conjecture was true. I do not know whether you will rememver me or not, but I have a most distinct recollection of you and those wooden clocks and other ingenious contrivances designed to shoot or pitch heavy sleepers …

Father's early death, he became the support of his widowed mother, and her young children. Arriving at manhood, he married a Virginia girl, who brought him a beautiful face, like that of "Mary Queen of Scotts," and made his life so bright with the sunshine of her presence, that when Death claimed her, he might have had written on his heart "sacred to the memory of my wife." How do I account for your sepulchral silence? You have gone to rescue Sheldon Jackson who, as I have noted, was stranded on some furthest shore while jeoparding his life as the apostle of the Aleuts. My dear Johnson;
Your care over my little book shows immeasurable kindness. The peculiar interest of travelers in Yosemite, almost the only part of the Sierra that they see seemed to call for a separate book that would serve as a guide, & I have commenced to make it,-- a small handy volume describing all the main Yosemities. In the first Chapter you will find a general description of them which I thought amid so much description was enough--
As to the title of the book, if it is too big & pretentious it may be …

I am writing to you this morning on Joanna's account, chiefly, and so will speak of that first. She talked her affairs over with me yesterday, and said that she had never been so hard pressed for money as now -- that Walter's affairs had managed to take another bad twist of some kind, and he had not been able to send money as usual and that in consequence her rent and grocery bills were unpaid. According to the table of contents of your volume you are going to print a book on the mountains of California with no description of the three chief attractions of that region,- namely, the three great gorges, the Hetch-Hetchy, Yosemite and the King's River Cañon.
