Dear John
Here I am again in my old quarters, where my brain has been so long absorbing nutriment from surrounding books, like a calf
sucking milk from its mothers udder. There's plenty of milk left, but somehow or other the apparatus for taking it in, is not in such complete order as in days past, & may be, the mental appetite is not so ravenous, as when the arguments of Knowledge brought in their precious freights during the noonday of manhood.
What think you? A month ago, after winnowing out most of the chaff from the …

I take pleasure in sending you with this a copy of my first book. You will say that I should have written it long ago, but I begrudged the time of my young mountain-climbing days.
We received your note and newspaper clippings and the Muir peak. I left Mrs. Muir to answer it, but suppose she has not.

The little book is now in the stores. How are you getting on with the 7th vol. of your grand book.
You are a most happy & heaven-blessed giant of a man in being blessed with the work of such a book. I envy you your celestial-terrestrial toil. I am barren this year, have been nowhere--puttered away the summer
with the proof sheets of the book. When will you be ready for the Himalaya or Caucasus I am ready for either range, but for China no. I have the Colorado Canon in …
