My dear Sir
Your kind letter of 9th was in yesterday. Many thanks for the same. I assure you that we will try to place it where it will do the birds "the most good". Yet I am free to state that, while we greatly need funds, I had much rather have rec. an article from your pen. We shall hope for the latter, after your "rush" is somewhat over. We have formed an organization of two, to try to do something for the birds. Miss Grove is one of the class of …

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)
Among the Birds of the Yosemite. 751 AMONG THE BIRDS OF THE YOSEMITE. Travelers in the Sierra forests usually complain of the want of life. " The trees" they say,'' are fine, but the empty stillness is deadly; there are no animals to be seen, no birds. We have not heard a song in all the woods." And no wonder ! They go in large parties with mules and horses; they make a great noise; they are dressed in outlandish, unnatural colors: every animal shuns them. Even the frightened pines would run away if they could. But Nature lovers, devout, …

My dear husband
Your two letters of Nov. 6th from Osborne's came just this afternoon. 8 days from the date of the postmark, and those beautiful ferns were 11 days on the way, all owing I suppose to the tunnel fire and blockade. The ferns and moss looked pretty fresh though, so I planted them carefully in fresh leaf mold from the hill, and so perhaps they will live.

This is a queer old Spanish town almost the oldest in America. Read about it Parkman. Palms cactuses live oaks hung with long moss magnolias etc & ruins of castles & churches & a lot of immense modern hotels wearisomely grand in which one gets lost.
The best thing I saw coming down the coast from Washington through Virginia Georgia & upper Florida was the happy hopeful bands of bright green long leaf pines. The young ones springing up among grass & dwarf palmettos. A cheerier brighter more beautiful set can not …

Dear Helen:
The train stopped 20 minutes for supper here, and I've just got back into the car. I can't see much of this famous old town, only a lot of lights in long rows. This morning and yesterday I saw the most beautiful oak woods, some of the trees yellow, some brown and some vivid scarlet and crimson. No trees are more gloriously colored in all the American forests than these eastern oaks. All the way through Virginia thus far they are the same. The reddest of all is the Scarlet Oak, …
