Porterville Cal. Jan 7, 1899

My Dear Mr. Muir -

Last season 200,000 sheep invaded the reservation by virtue of a temporary concession made by the Secretary of the Interior. I need not relate to you the damage and desolation which these sheep have wrought? You know all about such results from personal …

My dear Muir:

I am mailing you,at the request of General Abbot,a copy of The Engineering Magazine, published in England, which contains an article on Pacific coast trees, etc.To my mind it has no value, but I am only too glad to comply with any request or suggestion of the General's.
I suppose you have read Eliot1's article In the last Atlantic. You see that even he gives some countenance to the pasturage of sheep, probably by the talk of Bliss's agent.I think it would be a pretty good Idea if you would …

My Dear Sir

With this please find the "first fruits" of your generous contribution to the cause of the birds or what will be when sent out. This article of Mr. Dutcher's was "set up" in this form, with the intention of sending the same to all the [Agl.?] papers of the country, to serve as "copy"; it is just off the press. Just at this point (after letters had been written, and envelopes addressed to the [Agl.?] papers,) comes a letter from Mr. Lacey (Member from Iowa) saying that the bills in the Senate …

My dear Prof Sargent

I'm glad you're miserable about not going to Mexico, for it shows that your heartwood is still honest & loving towards the grand trees down there, though football games and Connecticut turkey momentarily got the better of you. The grand Taxodiums were object enough for the trip, & I came pretty near making it alone, would certainly have done it had I not felt childishly lonesome & woe-begone after you left me. No wonder I looked like an inland coot to friend Mellichamp. But what would that sharp observer have said to …

Mrs Muir & I were greatly shocked & distressed by the news of your accident. You must have suffered horribly & long in any case but after the ligaments & muscles were swollen & inflamed to have your arm set 48 hours after your fall was enough to kill. I am glad you have weathered the storm & I devoutly hope that soon you will be perfectly free from pain & sound & strong as ever.
I have always felt that sidewalks & everything artifical & civilized were dangerous & this dreadful accident …

ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARWARD UNIVERSITY,Jamaica plain, Mass, December 27, 1898.My dear Muir:

Your letter which I got two or three days ago sounded a little sad I think. I am not surprised, however, that a man who would rush through Texas, New Mexico and Arizona without stopping even for a day to look at some of the most interesting trees in the world should be a little dejected. It is pretty evident that you cannot be trusted to travel alone and that in future I shall have to be your constant companion.
